At War of the Ring we are eager to support the whole of the Tolkien web community as much as we can. Therefore, we are happy to host small sites for free where we can.
Additionally, we offer hosting for larger sites for either a subsidised or at cost fee. We can offer all the usual facilities such as cgi, mySQL, Cpanel, SSI, PHP, Front Page extensions. The reasoning we use is not to oversell the capacity we have, many hosts do this knowing that most users will not utilise the space or the bandwidth and then shut you off when you do.
However, from our own experience we realise that "hot topic" sites such as Tolkien ones really do use their alloted resources. As such we only put on the servers what they can manage.
The costs are also realistic for the kind of network we are on. Although we do try to charge as little as we can, we owe it to the users of the site and those we host to charge enough to cover the cost of hosting a site. Sadly in todays Internet there is no such thing as a free lunch!
Our main server is a P4 2.4Ghz with 2GB DDR and a 80GB harddrive. It is connected to a 100Mbps burstable pipe on a fully multi-homed network. Our ISP is Servint, known for their reliability and good support. The server is fully managed and all the software is updated frequently.
