This is the Elvish word for Nine, which eight of the nine Fellowship cast has chosen to be tattooed as the symbol of their 'off screen' friendship. John Rhys-Davies denied and sent his stunt double at his place. "We wanted something to carry away with us, to make us feel when we all split up that our time here  was real", Orlando Bloom said. 

As Sean Bean had already left the Lord Of The Rings set when the actors were tattooed, Orlando Bloom took him to a New York tattoo parlour to have his Elvish tattoo done. About the place where they all have chosen the tattoo to be done, Elijah Wood said : "Different places and we did different sort of shading so they all kinda look slightly different and unique to the individual." The actors were tattooed in Wellington (the capital of New Zealand) by Roger Ingerton. It was designed by illustrator Alan Lee. Director Peter Jackson and executive producer Mark Ordesky have got a commemorative tattoo as well. Theirs is the Elvish word for Ten.
