Ian (Murray) McKellen was
born on May 25th, 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire (in Nothern
England). His parents (Denis and Margery) soon moved to the
coal mining town of Wigan where Ian early developed a
fascination with acting and the theater, which was encouraged
by his family.

including a Golden Globe and the Empire 2002 Award. Received
the 'Variety U.K. Personality' award for his contribution to
the British film industry at the British Independent Film
Awards (Nov 2003). Lancaster University's Honorary Degree
(Doctor of letters) was awarded to Ian on July 14, 2004.
