Denethor was the Steward of Gondor, husband of Finduilas and father of two sons, Boromir and Faramir. Since he was twenty years old, Denethor saw Sauron recovereing his strength again as the Dark Lord of Mordor. The Steward of that time, Ecthelion II, was able to protect Gondor well against Mordor (he was served by a man called Thorongil, who was none other than Aragorn) After Ecthelion died, Denethor became Steward of Gondor. Only four years later, his wife Finduilas died and Denethor became very grim and serious, and he started to use the palantír. By this, Sauron was able to influence him until he finally, after the death of his son Boromir at Parth Galen, went mad. He burned himself to death with the palantír in his hand. His younger son Faramir became the Steward of Gondor after him. Denethor II is performed by John Noble in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings. |
