The story
of the Elves :
The first
Elves awoke at Cuiviénen, the Water of Awakening, in the East
of Middle-Earth. They awoke long before the rising of the sun
or the moon.
The Valar
knew the Elves would awake but not where or when. So first the
Valar did not notice the awakening of but the Elves were soon
discovered by the spies of Melkor. Melkor sent his creatures
to watch and harrass the Elves. He caught some Elves and
tortured them, so that these Elves became the first Orcs.
The Valar
discovered that the Elves had awoken when Orome was hunting in
Middle-Earth and heard the Elves singing. He gave them the
name of Eldar, which means people of the stars. But the Elves
called themselves Quendi which means : "Those who speak
with voices".
The Elves are
children of Ilśvatar and they are immortal. As long as the
world lasts, they do not suffer ageing or disease. But even if
they are forced to remain in the world until its ending, they
are not bound to Middle-Earth. They can take the straight road
and travel into the Uttermost West, a road wich is barred to
mortals. (In the Third Age, the Elves started to travel to the
Uttermost West because they became more and more melanchoic.
They lost the thirst for action which they had in the
beginning of the world and they feared that Sauron might be
undefeatable).
That Elves
are immortal does not mean they cannot be killed. When
they are killed, they only loose their body. Their soul can
return to earth in a new body (which happened once) or be sent
to the Halls of Mandos.
The appearance of the Elves :
Elves have
sharper eyes than any other races and they have a better
perception. They all are very beautiful and wise. They give
everything a name, even every tree has an own name and legend
tells that the trees learned how to speak from the Elves.
Music, art and science mean a lot more to them than power and
possession but still they sometimes are arrogant and vain.
Their deepest
weakness is that they mourn for the past. They don't like
changes.
