The story
of the Ents :
Also called
Tree-herds, the Ents came to Middle-Earth because Yavanna
wanted them to protect the trees. Each Ent was related to one
special tree, that was also the reason why Each Ent looked
different from the others.
The Ents
lived in caves which were always near springs. They ate only
liquid food (the drinks made the Hobbits Merry and Pippin grew
up after they had tasted it) and only seldom they laid down.
They were not immortal but they were very old. They moved only
slowly and it took them long until they took a decision. They
didn't like being hasty.
In the First
Age, the Ents lived everywhere in Middle-Earth, they were
spread over the whole land. In the Second Age, the Entwives
lived in the regions which were later known as the Brown
Lands. When Sauron attacked and destroyed these regions,
the Entwives fled. From then on the Etnwives were never seen
again, neither by the Ents nor by other people. It is said
that the Entwives taught the Men everything they knew about
farming. During the Third Age the Ents searched everywhere for
the Entwives, but they never found them. Therefore the Ents
were a dying folk at the time when Merry and Pippin met
Treebeard.
In the Third
Age, Treebeard and his friends destroyed Isengard. |
