He was the eldest son of Elendil. Together with his brother Anárion he escaped from the Downfall of Númenor with three ships. The two brothers built a kingdom and ruled it from Osgiliath. Isildur built the town Minas Ithil which was attacked by Sauron in the year 3429 of the Second Age. At that time, Isildur fled to Arnor and there he asked Elendil to help him in the fight against Sauron. The War of the Last Alliance began. Elendil was slain but Isildur was able to cut the One Ring off Sauron's hand. But instead of throwing it into the Cracks of Mount Doom, Isildur kept the Ring for himself.

Some years later he was attacked by Orcs. He tried to escape and put the Ring on. Invisible, he jumped into the River Andúin in the hope to reach the shore and be able to escape, but in the water the Ring fell of his hand. He became visible again and the Orcs shot him. A squire of Isildur brought the Shards of Narsil, the sword that cut the Ring off of Sauron's hand, to Rivendell.
