:: Samwise Gamgee ::

Name : Samwise Gamgee

Title : Mayor of the Shire
Date of birth : 6 April, Year 2983 of the Third Age
Date of death : Passed over the Sea in September 61 of the Fourth Age
Race : Hobbit, Haarfoot

Sam was the son of Bilbo's gardener Hamfast Gamgee and Bell Goodchild. He had two brother and two sisters and was the gardener of Frodo and at the same time his best and most loyal friend. Bilbo taught him how to read and write and his deepest wish was to see the Elves one day. That was also one reason why he joined Frodo when he left the Shire. At Elrond's council, Sam joined the Fellowship of the Ring and from nine companions he was the only one who went with Frodo to Mordor and to the Cracks of Doom.

After his return to the Shire, he married Rose Cotton and became the father of thirteen children. When Frodo left Middle-Earth with the other Ring-bearers Sam stayed. Fourty-nine years long he was the mayor of the Shire. After the death of his wife Rose he left Middle-Earth and passed over the Sea, being the last of the Ring-bearers.

Sam is performed by Sean Astin in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings.

"To me, he personifies decency, simplicity, honesty and loyalty, the ultimate Hobbit. Most of all, he has an undying friendship with Frodo that is so strong, he's willing to face the adventure of the unknown to help him."

"I look at him as this kind of pastoral figure, a farmer whose hands are always in the soil. He's not the most sophisticated being in the Fellowship, but he makes up for it with his earnest steadiness."
