Lee's classically romantic style is influenced by artists from the turn-of-the twentyth century like Arthur Rackman and Charles Robinson. He painted the jackets of the three volume set "The Lord Of The Rings", which was re-issued in 1987, and the covers of the mutli-volume "The History Of Middle Earth". Alan Lee was chosen to illustrate the 1200 pages edition of "The Lord Of The Rings" which was released for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tolkien. He also did all new illustrations for the 1993 J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar and a new edition of "The Hobbits" in 1997. |
