:: The Differences Between the Movie and the Book ::

The leaving of Bag-end

In the movie, Frodo and Sam left Hobbingen and on their way they met Merry and Pippin.

In the book, Frodo sold Bag-end to the Sackville-Bagginses and pretended that he would be going to live in Crickhollow, near by his relations, the Brandybucks. Therefore he bought a little house and let everybody know that Merry, Sam and Pippin would help him.

Indeed Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry and Fatty Bolger left Hobbingen and went to Crickhollow. On their way to Crickhollow they met the frist Black Rider and a group of Elves which were lead by Gildor. After taking a rest on Farmer Maggot's farm, they finally reached Crickhollow and from there they left to Bree.

Tom Bombadil

In the movie, the Hobbits went from Hobbingen directly to Bree, where they met Aragorn.

In the book, the Hobbits had to pass the Old Forest before they reached Bree. In the Old Forest they met Tom Bombadil. To know more about Tom Bombadil please take a look at the entries in our encyclopedia.

Flight to Rivendell

After Frodo has been wounded by a Black Rider at the Weathertop, Glorfindel helped him to escape to Rivendell. In the movie Glorfindel is replaced by Arwen.

In generally Arwen's role in the book is not as big as it is in the movie. The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen is only told in the apppendix, after the main story.

Lórien

There is a little difference between the book and the movie. When the Fellowship of the Ring met Haldir, (in the books) he first did not allow Gimli to enter Lórien because he didn't want a dwarf to see the way they would go. Therefore Haldir insisted on an eye bandage for Gimli. Gimli did not agree until all the members of the Fellowship finally offered to wear an eye bandage as well.

That is only a small difference but the eye bandage is a sign for the big distrust between Elves and Dwarves.
