We see the people of Rohan leaving to Helm's Deep.
While riding, Gimli talks about the Dwarven women.
Gimli : This, in turn, has given rise to the
belief that there are no dwarf women and that dwarves just spring out
of holes in the ground, which is of course ridiculous.
Éowyn laughs. Gimli suddenly falls down from
his horse. Aragorn and Théoden watch Éowyn, who is still laughing.
Théoden : I haven't seen my niece smile for a
long time. She was a girl when they brought her father back dead. Cut
down by orcs. She watched her mother succumb to grief. Then she was
left alone to tend her king in growing fear. Doomed to wait upon an
old man who should have loved her as a father.
Aragorn does not answer. |

|
|
|
While the people of Rohan have a rest on
their way to Helm's Deep, Éowyn prepares a stew, which she first
offers to Gimli. As Gimli doesn't want any, she offers it to Aragorn.
Éowyn : I made some stew. It isn't much but it's hot.
Aragorn : Thank you.
He tries the stew which is obviously not very tasty, judging by the
look on his face.
Aragorn : It is good.
Éowyn : Really ? |

|
|
|
Éowyn turns around to leave. Aragorn is about to throw the stew away when
she turns to him again.
Éowyn : My uncle told me a strange thing. He
said that you rode to war with Thengel, my grandfather. But he must be
mistaken.
Aragorn: The King has a good memory. He was only a small child at
the time.
Éowyn : Then you must be at least 60.
Aragorn smiles at her.
Éowyn : 70 ? |

|
|
|
He still smiles.
Éowyn : But you cannot be 80 !
Aragorn : 87.
Éowyn : You are one of the Dúnedain. A descendant of Númenor,
blessed with long life. It was said that your race had passed into
legend.
Aragorn : There are few of us left. The northern kingdom was
destroyed long ago.
Éowyn : I am sorry. Please. Eat. |

In the night, Aragorn dreams of Arwen. The next day,
Éowyn asks him where the woman who gave him the Evening star is. He
then remembers the day he said goodbye to Arwen, before leaving with the
Fellowship. We see him walking down a stair in Rivendell. Arwen joins
him.
Arwen : Is this how you would take your leave ? Did you think you
could slip away at first light, unnoticed ?
Aragorn : I will not be coming back.
Arwen : You underestimate your skill in battle. You will come back.
Aragorn : It is not of defeat in battle that I speak...
Arwen : What do you speak of ?
Aragorn gives the Evening star back to Arwen, but she wants him to
keep it. |

|
After the attack of the Wargs, the people of Rohan
reach Helm's Deep. Éowyn and some others are stocking the food.
Éowyn : Where is the rest ?
Man : This is all we could save my lady.
Éowyn : Take it to the caves.
King Théoden and his men arrive. |

In Ithilien, Faramir talks to Frodo and Sam.
Faramir : You're a friend of Boromir ?
Frodo : Yes. For my part.
Faramir : It will grieve you then to learn that he is dead ?
Frodo : Dead ? How ? When ?
Faramir : As one of his companions, I'd hoped you would tell me.
Frodo : If something has happened to Boromir we would have you
to tell us.
Faramir : His horn washed up upon the riverbank about six days
past. It was cloven in two. But more than this I know it in my heart.
He was my brother. |

|
|
|
In a flash-back scene, we see Faramir standing on
the bank of a river. A boat is coming closer. In it lies the dead
Boromir.
Back in Ithilien, we see Faramir sitting on a stone, holding the
broken horn of his brother. He remembers the day when he and his
brother had just taken back Osgiliath back from the Orcs. His brother held
a speech in front of the soldiers of Gondor. |

|
|
|
Soldiers : Boromir ! Boromir !
Boromir : This city was once the jewel of our kingdom. A place of
light and beauty and music. And so it shall be once more. Let the
armies of Mordor know this : Never again will the land of my people
fall into enemy hands. The city of Osgiliath has been reclaimed for
Gondor !
Soldiers : For Gondor !
Boromir : For Gondor !
Soldiers : For Gondor ! |

|
|
|
After the speech, Faramir talks to Boromir.
Faramir : Good speech. Nice and short.
Boromir : Leaves more time to drinking. (To some soldiers) Break
out the ale. These men are thirsty. (To Faramir again) Remember
today, little brother. Today, life is good.
Faramir looks aside.
Boromir : What ?
Faramir : He's here.
Boromir : Moment of peace, can he not give us that ? |

|
|
|
Denethor joins them.
Denethor : Where is he ? Where is Gondor's finest ? Where is my
first born ?
Boromir : Father !
Denethor : They say you vanquished the enemy almost
single-handedly.
Boromir : They exaggerate. The victory belongs to Faramir also.
Denethor : But for Faramir this city would still be standing.
(To Faramir) Were you not entrusted to protect it ?
Faramir : I would have done, but our numbers where too few.
Denethor : Oh, too few. You let the enemy walk in and take it on a
whim. Always you cast a poor reflection on me.
Faramir : That is not my intend.
Boromir : You give him no credit and yet he tries to do your will.
Boromir and Denethor leave Faramir alone. |
|
|
|
Boromir : He loves you father.
Denethor : Do not trouble me with Faramir. I know his uses, and
they are few. We have more urgent things to speak of. Elrond of
Rivendell has called a meeting. He will not say why, but I have
guessed its purpose. It is rumored that the weapon of the enemy has
been found.
Boromir : The One Ring. Isildur's bane.
Denethor : It has fallen into the hands of the Elves. Everyone will
try to claim it. Men, Dwarves, wizards. We cannot let that happen.
This thing must come to Gondor.
Boromir : Gondor.
Denethor : It's dangerous, I know. Ever the Ring will seek to
corrupt the hearts of lesser Men. But you, you are strong. And our
need is great. It is our blood which is being spilled, our people who
are dying. Sauron is biding his time. He's massing fresh armies. He
will return. And when he does, we will be powerless to stop him. You
must go. Bring me back this mighty gift.
Boromir : No. My place is here with my people. Not in Rivendell.
Denethor : Would you deny your own father ? |

|
|
|
Faramir joins them.
Faramir : If there is need to go to Rivendell, send me in instead.
Denethor : You ? Oh I see. A chance for Faramir, captain of
Gondor to show his quality. I think not. I trust this mission only to
your brother. The one who will not fail me.
We see Boromir leaving Gondor. He looks back to his brother.
Boromir : Remember today, little brother. |

In Ithilien, Faramir
gives Frodo the chance to save Gollum, which is what Frodo does. We see
Faramir's men beating Sméagol, before Gollum awakes again.

In Helm's Deep, people are preparing to fight.
Aragorn and Legolas are walking through the crowd.
Aragorn : We'll place the reserves along the wall. They can support
the archers from above the gate.
Legolas : Aragorn, you must rest. You're of no use to us half
alive.
Éowyn joins them.
Éowyn : Aragorn. I'm to be sent with the women into the caves.
Aragorn : That is an honorable charge.
Éowyn : To mind the children, to find food and bedding when the
men return. What renown is there in that ?
Aragorn : My lady, a time may come for valor without renown. Who
then will your people look at in the last defense ?
Éowyn : Let me stay at your side.
Aragorn : It is not in my power to command it.
Éowyn : You do not command the others to stay. They fight beside
you because they would not be parted from you. Because they love
you!!!... I'm sorry. |
