The Years Before The Trees

Age 1 : The Valar reach Arda. Melkor descends to Arda and destroys their work.

Age 15 : Tulkas reaches Arda and chases Melkor away. A long time of peace follows.

Age 19 : The Two Lamps Illuin and Ormal are built. The Valar take their home on Almaren.

Age 34 : Melkor returns to Arda and starts building Utumno. He destroys the Lamps of the Valar and forces the Valar to move into the West.

Age 35 : The Two Trees of Valinor are build upon the mountain Ezellohar.

The Years Of The Trees

Year 1 : The Two Trees blossom out and a time of peace begins.

Year 1000 : The Valar take hold council about the awakening of the Elves. Mandos explains that the time that the Elves will awake is near. Arda starts building brighter stars.

Year 1050 : Varda outs the Valacirca into the northern sky. Just in that moment the Elves awake at Cuivienen. Melian leaves Valinor and moves to Middle-Earth.

Year 1085 : Orome discovers the Elves and calls them Eldar.

Year 1086 : Manwë holds council and decides to make war on Melkor to protect the Elves.

Year 1090 : The war starts.

Year 1099 : The Valar take Utumno and bind Melkor with the chain Angainor.

Year 1101 : The Valar decide to invite the Elves to come to Valinor.

Year 1102 : The Elves send three ambassadors to Valinor: Ingwë, Finwë and Elwë.

Year 1105 : The biggest part of the Elves starts moving westward. Those that remain are called Avari.

Year 1115 : The Elves cross the Anduin. The Teleri stay there. Lenwë leads a prt of the Elves into the South.

Year 1125 : The Vanyar and the Noldor reach Beleriand.

Year 1128 : The Teleri arrive in the east of Beleriand and settle at the River Gelion.

Year 1130 : Elwe meets Melian in Nan Elmoth and is enchanted by her.

Year 1132 : The Vanyar and the Noldor step onto an island which is pulled to Valinor by Ulmo. In Valinor the Elves start to build Tirion.

Year 1142 : Yavanna gives Galthilion, the White Tree, to the Noldor.

Year 1149 : Ulmo offers the Teleri to bring them to Valinor, but most of the remain in Beleriand and settle at the coast. Círdan becomes their leader.

Year 1150 : Olwe and his people finally step onto the island, which is pulled through the ocean to Valinor by Ulmo. Arriving in Valinor the Teleri are not longer willing to leave the island. It is settled by Ulmo in the Bay of Eldamar.

Year 1152 : Elwe wakes up again and together with Melian he returns to his people. He becomes king and his people are called the Sindar.

Year 1169 : Fëanor was born, his mother Míriel dies.

Year 1185 : Finwë marries Indis, who is the sister of Ingwë.

Year 1190 : Fingolfin was born, he is the eldest son of Finwë and Indis.

Year 1200 : Lúthien was born.

Year 1230 : Finarfin, the second son of Indis was born.

Year 1250 : Fëanor invents new letters and runes. In Beleriand, the Naugrim meet the Sindar.

Year 1300 : Turgon, son of Fingolfin, and Finrod, son of Finarfin, were born. With the help of the Naugrim, Thingol starts to build Menegroth.

Year 1330 : The first Orcs arrive in Beleriand.

Year 1362 : In Eldamar Galadriel was born, in Tirion Aredhel was born.

Year 1400 : Melkor is set free. He starts to poison the peace of Valinor.

Year 1449 : Fëanor creates the Silmaril.

Year 1490 : Fëanor threatens Fingolfin and is abandoned from Tirion. Finwë joins him. Melkor was meant to be punished, but he is able to hide.

Year 1492 : Melkor visits Fëanor in Formenos and tries to get him as a friend. He fails and hunted by Tulkas he flees to Avathar. There, Ungoliant joins him.

Year 1495 : Melkor and Ungoliant destroy the Two Trees. Melkor slains Finwë, steels the Silmaril and flees to Angband. Fëanor and the Noldor leave Valinor. Mandos curses all who leave Valinor but only Finarfin returns.

Year 1497 : The First Battle of Beleriand is fought. In Losgar the ships are burned while in Mithrim the Dagor-nuin-Giliath is fought. The Noldor win the battle but Fëanor dies.

Year 1198 : Morgoth captures Meadhros and enchains him at the Thangorodrim. Fingolfin and his people cross the Helcaraxë.

Year 1500 : Fingolfin and his people arrive in Middle-Earth at the first rising of the Moon. In Hildórien the first Men awake.

The First Age

Year 1 : First Sunrise.

Year 5 : Fingon frees Maedhros.

Year 6 : The Noldor explore Beleriand. Angrod arrives at Menegroth.

Year 7 : The Noldor choose Fingolfin as their king.

Year 52 : Finrod starts to build Nargothrond. At the same year, Ulmo leads Turgon to the valley of Tumladen. In Turgon, the idea rises to build a secret town there.

Year 60 : The Third Battle, the Dagor Aglareb is fought. The siege of Angband begins.

Year 64 : Turgon starts to build Gondolin.

Year 65 : Brithombar and Eglarest are built.

Year 67 : Thingol learns about the Silmaril and the murder among the Noldor. He banishes the language of the Noldor.

Year 102 : Nargothrond is finished.

Year 116 : Gondolin is finished. Turgon leaves Vinyamar.

Year 260 : The dragon Glaurung rises from Angband, but Fingon chases him away. The long peace begins.

Year 262 : Beor the Old was born.

Year 310 : Finrod meets the first humans, who are led by Beor. Estolad is founded.

Year 311 : Beor becomes the vasall of Finrod. Together they leave the Men.

Year 320 : Maeglin, son of Aredhel and Eol, was born.

Year 330 : The Men start to leave Estolad and move to the lands of the Elves.

Year 375 : The Men in Thargelion are attacked by the Orcs. Haldad and Haldar die, but Curufin and Celegorm are able to chase away the Orcs.

Year 400 : Aredhel and Meaglin flee to Gondolin. They are followed by Eol, who kills Aredhel. Eol himself is killed by Caragdûr.

Year 420 : Death of Haleth.

Year 432 : Beren, son of Barahir, was born.

Year 441 : Húrin, son of Galdor was born.

Year 444 : Huor, brother of Húrin, was born.

Year 455 : The Dagor Bragollach is fought. Ardgalen and Dorthonion are destroyed, Angrod and Aegnor die.

Year 456 : Fingolfin asks Morgoth for a battle between the two of them. Morgoth agrees and Fingolfin looses the battle. His son Fingon become the new High King.

Year 464 : Beren flees from Dorthonion and crosses the Girdle of Melian. There he sees Lúthien for the first time. Húrin marries Morwen, who gives birth to Turin.

Year 465 : Beren starts the Quest of the Silmaril.

Year 466 : Beren and Luthien come to Angband and get a Silmaril. Beren is badly wounded.

Year 467 : Beren and Luthien are given a second live.

Year 472 : The Nirnaeth Arnoediad is fought. Fingon is killed by Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. Huor and Haldir are killed. Hurin is caught by Morgoth.

Year 473 : Nienor was born.

Year 489 : Turin is caught by the Orcs. When he is freed, he accidently kills his friend Beleg.

Year 495 : Morgoth takes Nargothrond. In Nevrast, Tuor has a vision of Ulmo.

Year 496 : Tuor reaches Gondolin and tells the people about the warning of Ulmo, but Turgon is not ready to leave Gondolin. Nienor is enchanted by a dragon so that she does not longer know who she is.

Year 498 : Turin does not recognize his sister and marries her.

Year 499 : Death of Turin and Nienor.

Year 503 : Elwing and Earendil are born.Thingol asks the dwarven smiths to set the Silmaril into the Nauglamir. Beren gets the Nauglamir and gives it to Luthien.

Year 506 : Second death of Beren and Luthien. Dior gets the Nauglamir. The sons of Feanor ask for the Silmaril.

Year 509 : The sons of Feanor attack Doriath. Elwing is able to flee with the Nauglamir to the Mouth of Sirion.

Year 510 : Morgoth attacks Gondolin, the city is destroyed.

Year 530 : Marriage of Elwing and Earendil.

Year 532 : Elrond and Elros, sons of Earendil and Elwing, were born.

Year 538 : Elwing takes the Silmaril and runs into the ocean.

Year 542 : Elwing and Earendil reach Valinor and convince the Valar to make war against Morgoth.

Year 550 : The War of Wrath begins.

Year 587 : Morgoth is defeated, the Silmaril are lost.

Year 590 : The Elves and some loyal men go into the west. The First Age ends.

The Second Age

Year 1 : Foundation of the Grey Havens and of Lindon.

Year 32 : The Edain reach Númenor.

Year 40 : Many Dwarves leave Ered Luin and move to Moria.

Year 442 : Death of Elros.

Year 500 : Sauron appears in Middle-Earth again.

Year 600 : The first ships of the Númenoreans appear off the coasts.

Year 750 : Eregion is founded by the Noldor.

Year 1000 : Sauron chooses Mordor as the land he will dwell in, and begins the building of Barad-Dûr.

Year 1075 : Tar-Ancalime becomes the first ruling Queen of Númenor.

Year 1200 : Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-Galad refuses to treat with him, but the smiths of Eregion are won over.

Year 1500 : Instructed by Sauron the Elven-smiths begin the forging of the Rings of Power.

Year 1590 : The Three Rings of Power are completed.

Year 1600 : Sauron forges the One Ring in Orodruin. Barad-dûr is completed.

Year 1693 : The war between the Elves and Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden from Sauron.

Year 1695 : Sauron's forces invade Eriador. Gil-galad sends Elrond to Eregion.

Year 1697 : Eregion laid waste. Death of Celebrimbor. The gates of Moria are shut and Elrond founds Imladris.

Year 1699 : Sauron overruns Eriador.

Year 1700 : Tar-Minastir sends a great navy from Númenor to Lindon. Sauron is defeated.

Year 1701 : Sauron is driven out of Eriador.

Year 1800 : The Númenoreans begin to establish dominions of the coasts. Sauron extends his power eastwards. The shadow falls on Númenor.

Year 2251 : Rebellion and division of the Númenoreans begins. The Nazgûl appear for the first time.

Year 2280 : Umbar is made into a great fortress of Númenor.

Year 2350 : Pelagrir is built.

Year 3175 : Civil war in Númenor.

Year 3255 : Ar-Pharazôn the Golden seizes the sceptre.

Year 3262 : Sauron is taken as prisoner to Númenor. There he starts to seduce the King and corrupts the Númenoreans.

Year 3319 : Ar-Pharazôn assails Valinor. Downfall of Númenor. Elendil and his sons escape.

Year 3320 : Arnor and Gondor are founded and the Stones are divided. Sauron returns to Mordor.

Year 3429 : Sauron attacks Gondor, takes Minas Ithil and burns the White Tree. Isildur escapes down Anduin and goes to Elendil in the North. Anárion defends Minas Arnor and Osgiliath.

Year 3430 : The Last Alliance of Elves and Men is formed.

Year 3431 : Gil-galad and Elendil march east to Imladris.

Year 3434 : The host of the Alliance crosses the Misty Mountains. Battle of Dargorlad and defeat of Sauron. Siege of Barad-dûr begins.

Year 3340 : Anárion is slain.

Year 3441 : Sauron is overthrown by Elendil and Gil-Galad, who perish. Isildur takes the One Ring. Sauron passes away and the Nazgûl go into the shadows. The Secon Age ends.

The Third Age

Year 2 : Isildur plants a seedling of the White Three in Minas Arnor. He delivers the South-Kingdom to Meneldil. Disaster of the Gladden Fields. Isildur and his three elder sons are slain.

Year 3 : Othar brings the Shards of Narsil to Imladris.

Year 10 : Valandil becomes king of Arnor.

Year 109 : Elrond weds Celebrian, daughter of Celeborn.

Year 130 : Birth of Elladan and Elrohir, sons of Elrond.

Year 241 : Birth of Arwen.

Year 420 : Minas Arnor is rebuilt by King Ostosher.

Year 830 : Falastur begins the line of the Ship-kings of Gondor.

Year 861 : Death of Eärendur and division of Arnor.

Year 933 : Umbar becomes a fortress of Gondor.

Year 1050 : Hyarmendacil conquers the Harad. Gondor reaches the hight of its power. About this time, a shadow falls on Greenwood and men begin to call it Mirkwood. The Hobbits are first mentioned in records.

Year 1100 : The Wise (Istari and the chief Eldar) discover that an evil power has made a stronghold at Dol Guldur. It is thought to be one of the Nazgûl.

Year 1300 : Orcs increase in the Misty Mountains and attack the Dwarves. The Nazgûl reappear. The chief of these comes north to Angmar. The Hobbits migrate westwards, many settle at Bree.

Year 1409 : The Witch-King of Angmar invades Arnor. The Tower of Amon Sûl is destroyed.

Year 1432 : King Valacar of Gondor dies and the civil war of the Kin-strife begins.

Year 1437 : Burning of Osgiliath and loss of the palantír.

Year 1447 : Battle of the Crossings of Erui. Siege of Pelagrir.

Year 1448 : Rebels escape and seize Umbar.

Year 1551 : Hyarmendacil II defeats the Men of Harad.

Year 1601 : Many Hobbits migrate from Bree and are granted land beyond the Baranduin by Argeleb II.

Year 1634 : The Corsairs ravage Pelagrir and slay King Minardil.

Year 1636 : The Great Plague devastates Gondor. Death of King Telemnar and his children. The White Tree dies in Minas Arnor. The plague spreads north and west and many parts of Eriador become desolate. Beyond the Baranduin the Hobbits survive but suffer great loss.

Year 1640 : King Tarondor removes the King's House to Minas Arnor, plants a seedling of the White Tree. Osgiliath begins to fall into ruin. Mordor is left unguarded.

Year 1851 : The attacks of the Wainriders upon Gondor begin.

Year 1899 : King Calimehtar defeats the Wainriders on Dagorlad.

Year 1900 : Calimehtar builds the White Tower in Minar Arnor.

Year 1940 : Gondor and Arnor renew communications and form an alliance.

Year 1974 : End of the North-kingdom. The Witch-King overruns Arthedain and takes Fornost.

Year 1975 : The palantiri of Annúminas and Amon Sûl are lost. The Witch-King is defeated at the Battle of Fornost and pursued to the Ettenmoors. He vanishes from the North.

Year 1976 : Aranarth takes the title of the Chieftain of the Dúnedain. The heirlooms of Arnor are given into the keeping of Elrond.

Year 1979 : Bucca of the Marish becomes th first Thain of the Shire.

Year 1980 : The Witch-King comes to Mordor and there gathers the Nazgûl. A Balrog appears in Moria and slays Durin VI.

Year 1981 : Nain I is slain. The Dwarves flee from Moria. Many of the Silvan Elves of Lórien flee south. Amroth and Nimrodel are lost.

Year 1999 : Thráin I comes to Erebor and founds a dwarf-kingdom under the mountain.

Year 2000 : The Nazgûl issue from Mordor and besiege Minas Ithil.

Year 2002 : Fall of Minas Ithil, afterwards known as Minas Morgul. The palantir is captured.

Year 2043 : Eärnur becomes King of Gondor. He is challenged by the Witch-King.

Year 2050 : The challenge is renewed. Eärnur rides to Minas Morgul and is lost. Mardil becomes the first ruling Stewart of Gondor.

Year 2060 : The power of Dol Gulgur grows. The Wise fear it may be Sauron taking shape again.

Year 2063 : Gandalf goes to Dol Guldur. Sauron retreats and hides in the East. The Watchful Peace begins. The Nazgûl remains quite in Minas Morgul.

Year 2210 : Thorin I leaves Erebor.

Year 2340 : Isumbras I. becomes the thirteenth Thain and first of the Took line. The Oldbucks occupy the Buckland.

Year 2460 : The Watchful Peace ends. Sauron returns with increased strength to Dol Guldur.

Year 2463 : The White Council is formed. Déagol finds the One Ring and is slain by Sméagol.

Year 2470 : Sméagol hides in the Misty Mountains.

Year 2475 : Attack on Gondor renewed. Osgiliath is finally ruined and its stone-bridge broken.

Year 2480 : Orcs begin to make secret strongholds in the Misty Mountains so as to bar all the passes into Eriador. Sauron begins to people Moria with his creatures.

Year 2510 : Celebrian departs over the sea. The Rohirrim settle in Calenardhon.

Year 2569 : Brego, son of Eorl, completes the Golden Hall.

Year 2570 : Dragons reappear in the North and begin to afflict the Dwarves.

Year 2589 : Dáin I is slain by a dragon.

Year 2670 : Tobold plants pipe-weed in the Southfarthing.

Year 2683 : Isengrim II becomes tenth Thain and begins the excavation of Great Smials.

Year 2698 : Ecthelion I rebuilds the White Tower in Minas Tirith.

Year 2747 : Bandobras Took defeats an Orc-band in the Northfarthing.

Year 2758 : Rohan is attacked from west and east and overrun. Gondor is attacked by fleets of the Corsairs. Helm of Rohan takes refuge in Helm's Deep. The Long Winter follows. Great suffering and loss in Eriador and Rohan. Gandalf comes to the aid of the Shire-folks.

Year 2759 : Death of Helm. Fréaláf begins the second line of the Kings of the Mark. Saruman takes up his abode in Isengard.

Year 2770 : Smaug descends on Erebor. Dale is destroyed. Thrór escapes with Thrain II and Thorin II.

Year 2790 : Thrór is slain by an Orc in Moria. The Dwarves gather for a war of vengeance. Birth of Gerontius, later known as Old Took.

Year 2793 : The War of the Dwarves and the Orcs begins.

Year 2799 : Battle of Nanduhirion before the East-gate of Moria. Thráin II and his son Thorin wander westwards. They settle in the south of Ered Luin.

Year 2845 : Thráin is imprisoned in Dol Guldur; the last of the Seven Rings is taken from him.

Year 2850 : Gandalf again enters Dol Guldur and discovers that is master is indeed Sauron. He finds Thrain and recieves the key of Erebor. Thráin dies in Dol Guldur.

Year 2851 : The White Council meets. Gandalf urges to attack on Dol Guldur. Saruman overrules him and begins to search near the Gladden Fields.

Year 2852 : Belecthor II of Gondor dies. The White Tree dies and no seedling can be found. The dead tree is left standing.

Year 2890 : Bilbo is born in the Shire.

Year 2901 : Most of the remaining inhabitants of Ithilien desert it owing to the attacks of the Uruks of Mordor. The secret refuge of Henneth Annûn is built.

Year 2907 : Birth of Gilraen, mother or Aragorn II.

Year 2911 : The Fell Winer. The Baranduin and other rivers are frozen. White wolves invade Eriador from the North.

Year 2920 : Death of Old Took.

Year 2929 : Arathorn weds Gilraen.

Year 2930 : Denethor II, son of Ecthelion II is born in Minas Tirith.

Year 2931 : Aragorn II is born.

Year 2933 : Arathorn is slain. Gilraen takes Aragorn to Imladris. Elrond recieves him as foster-son and gives him the name Estel, his ancestry is concealed.

Year 2939 : Saruman discovers that Sauron's servants are searching the Anduin near the Gladden Fields and that Sauron therefore has learned of Isildur´s end. He is alarmed but says nothing to the Council.

Year 2941 : Thorin Oakshield and Gandalf visit Bilbo in the Shire. Bilbo meets Sméagol and finds the One Ring. The White Coucil meets. Saruman agrees to attack on Dol Guldur, since he know wishes to prevent Sauron from searching the river. Sauron having made his plans abandons Dol Guldur. The Battle of the Five Armies in Dale takes place. Thorin II dies and Smaug is slain by Bard of Esgaroth.

Year 2942 : Bilbo returns to the Shire with the Ring. Sauron returns in secret to Mordor.

Year 2944 : Gollum leaves the Misty Mountains and begins to search for the thief of the Ring.

Year 2948 : Théoden, son of Thengel, was born.

Year 2949 : Gandalf and Balin visit Bilbo in the Shire.

Year 2951 : Sauron declares himself openly and gathers power in Mordor. The rebuilding of Barad-dûr begins. Gollum turns towards Mordor. Elrond reveals to Estel his real name and ancestry and delivers to him the shards of Narsil. Arwen meets Aragorn in the woods of Imladris. Aragorn goues out into the Wild.

Year 2953 : Last meeting of the White Council. They debate the Rings. Saruman feigns that he has discovered that the One Ring has passed down the Anduin to the Sea. Saruman withdraws to Isengard which he takes as his own and fortifies it. Being jealous and afraid of Gandalf he sets spies to watch all his movements and notes his interest in the Shire. He begins to keep agents in Bree and the Southfarthing.

Year 2954 : Mount Doom bursts into flame again.

Year 2956 : Aragorn meets Gandalf and their friendship begins.

Year 2957 : Aragorn undertakes his great journeys and errantries. As Thorongil he serves in disguise both Thengel of Rohan and Ecthelion II of Gondor.

Year 2968 : Birth of Frodo.

Year 2978 : Birth of Boromir.

Year 2980 : Aragorn enters Lórien and there meets again Arwen. Aragorn gives her the ring of Barahir and they plight their troth upon the hill of Cerin Amroth. Gollum reaches the confines of Mordor and becomes accquainted with Shelob. Théoden becomes King of Rohan.

Year 2983 : Faramir and Samwise were born.

Year 2984 : Denethor II becomes Steward of Gondor.

Year 2989 : Balin leaves Erebor and enters Moria.

Year 2991 : Éomer, son of Éomund was born.

Year 2994 : Balin perishes and the dwarf-colony is destroyed.

Year 2995 : Éowyn, sister of Éomer, was born.

Year 3000 : Saruman dares to use the palanir of Orthanc, but becomes ensnared by Sauron who has the Ithil stone. He becomes a traitor to the council. His spies report that the Shire is being closely guarded by Rangers.

Year 3001 : Bilbo's farewell feast. Gandalf suspects his ring to be the One Ring. Gandalf seeks for news of Gollum and calls for the help of Aragorn.

Year 3002 : Bilbo becomes a guest of Elrond and settles in Rivendell.

Year 3007 : Death of Gilraen.

Year 3008 : Gandalf pays his last visit to Frodo.

Year 3009 : Gandalf and Aragorn renew their hunt for Gollum at intervals during the next eight years. At some time during these years, Gollum himself ventured into Mordor and was captured by Sauron. Elrond sends for Arwen and she returns to Imladris.

Year 3017 : Gollum is released from Mordor. He is brought by Aragorn to the Dead Marshes and to Thranduil, in Mirkwood. Gandalf visits Minas Tirith and reads the scroll of Isildur.
