The End Of The Third Age

For a long time Tolkien wasn't sure at all about what should happen at Mount Doom. Here are some of his ideas :

- Sam breaks a leg, so that Frodo must climb the mountain alone.

- Sam goes with Frodo and wrestles with Gollum. Gollum and Sam fall into gulf.

- Sam throws Gollum into gulf.

- Gollum commits suicide.

Aragorn was first meant to be crowned by Faramir and Prince Imrahil, later by Gandalf, Frodo and Sam.

The last chapters of the Lord of the Rings were developed mostly in one draft only, without many changes.
