+ Acar : One of the six tributaries of the Gelion in Ossiriand.

 

+ Adurant : One of the six tributaries of the Gelion. Adurant was the southernmost of them. In the Adurant laid the island of Tol Galen.

 

+ Aegnor : He was the son of Finarfin and the elder brother of Galadriel. He was lost in the Dagor Bragollach.

 

+ Aelin-uial : See Twilight Meres for more information.

 

+ Ainulindalë : Another name for the Great Music of the Ainur, through which the world was created.

 

+ Ainur : The Ainur were spirits created by Eru. They were the mightiest beings which were ever created. Through the Music of the Ainur the world was created. Those of the Ainur who descended into the world were called the Valar, the less powerful of the Ainur were called the Maiar.

 

+ Almaren : Almaren was founded by the Valar long before the time of the Two Trees of Valinor and even before the Valar came to Valinor. It was the home of the Valar when the Earth was still lit by the Two Lamps of the Valar. Almaren layed in the central regions of Middle-Earth and there the Valar fought for the first time against Melkor. Almaren was destroyed and the Valar left Middle-Earth and founded Valinor which layed far away in the West, in the land Aman.

 

+ Alqualondë : The swanhaven of the Teleri and their king Olwë, which laid at the eastern shores of Aman (see below). Form here the Teleri were able to see the light of the Two Trees of Valinor through the Calacirya. The place is called Swanhaven because when the Teleri first came from Tol Erresëa to Aman, Ossë made their ships being pulled by swans.

 

+ Aman : Also called the Undying Lands. It was the country were the Valar lived after Melkor had destroyed their first home on the isle Almaren (see above). In Aman the Valar founded Valinor. There also the Vanyar, the Noldor and a part of the Teleri wandered at the time of the Great Journey of the Elves. To protect Aman against Melkor the Valar built mountains (the mountains were called the Pelóri) along the borders of Aman. Men were not allowed to live in Aman. Especially the Numenorer were angry about that. They tried to conquer Aman but as result, their army and the land Numenor were destroyed. After that Aman was taken out of the world so that only the Elves could reach it.

 

+ Amarïe : The beloved of Finrod. While Finrod returned to Middle-Earth, she stayed in Valinor.

 

+ Amlach : He was the son of Imlach who was the son of Marach. Like Bereg, he was a leader of the dissension among the Men of Estolad.

 

+ Amon Ered : A hill in the southern plains of East Beleriand. It was the highest point in that region and therefore a very important hill. It guarded the eastern passage aroung the Long Wall into the southern part of Beleriand. At this hill Denethor, son of Lenwë, died.

 

+ Amon Gwareth : The hill upon which Gondolin was founded by Turgon.

 

+ Amon Hen : A big hill that layed on the western bank of the Andúin, above the Falls of Rauros. At Amon Hen the Fellowship fought against the Orcs and Uruk-Hai. There, Boromir died and there Frodo started his lonely journey to Mordor.

 

+ Amon Rudh : A hill that laid south of Brethil in Beleriand. There were the halls of Mîm, the Dwarf, and Túrin and his outlaws lived there for some time.

 

+ Amon Sûl : A hill that layed at the southern end of the Weather Hills. By Men it was called Weathertop. At its summit there was once a big tower which held one of the palantíri. At this time the hill marked the border between the three kingdoms Arthedain, Rhudaur and Cardolan. The three kingdoms fought for the hill and in the end a big army of Angmar won and destroyed the tower on top of the hill.

 

+ Amras : Born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees he was the youngest son of Fëanor. He dwelt with his twin brother Amrod (see below) in the eastern plains of Beleriand and was slain in the assault on the Mouths of Sirion.

 

+ Amrod : He was the youngest of the seven sons of Fëanor and dwelt together with his twin brother Amras (see above) in the eastern plains of Beleriand.

 

+ Amroth and Nimrodel : Nimrodel belonged to the Wood Elves and she didn't want to have any contact with the Sindar or the Noldor because she blamed them for the long lasting wars in Middle-Earth.

Amroth, the Lord of Lórien, was a Sindar. He felt in love with Nimrodel. For her he started to live in flets (wooden platforms in the trees of Lórien.) When Lórien was attacked by Orcs, Nimrodel promised Amroth that she would become his wife if he will bring her to peaceful land. Because in Middle-Earth there was war in every country, Amroth wanted to go with Nimrodel into the West. Therefore he travelled with her to Belfalas where a ship would leave to the West. On their way to Belfalas they were seperated. Amroth reached the ship and waited many many days for Nimrodel. A terrible storm ripped the ship of it's anchorage and drove it off the habour. Amroth tried to swim back to the harbour but he was drowned. What happened to Nimrodel noone knows.

 

+ Anar : The name of the Sun. The Sun was made of the last fruit of Laurelin, one of the Two Trees of Valinor which had been destroyed by Melkor and Ungoliant. The fruit was put into a vessel made by Aulë's (see below) folk and steered into the sky by the Maia Arien (see below). Anar means "the Fire-golden".

 

+ Andram : The mountain range that ran across Beleriand from west to east. It was also called the Long Wall. Its western end was in the hills of Nargothrond, in the east it ended in the hills of Ramdal.

 

+ Andúin : The river Andúin was also called the Great River. It ran hundreds of miles southwards through Middle-Earth and reached the sea in the Bay of Belfalas. Into the Andúin flowed the rivers Celebrant, Entwash, Erui, Gladden, Greylin, Limlight, Morgulduin, Poros and Sirith. The word "Anduin" means "long river".

 

+ Andúril : Andúril was the name of Aragorn's sword. It was reforged by the Elves of Rivendell from the shards of Elendil's sword Narsil. Andúril's blade showed seven starts, set between the crescent moon and the rayed sun. Around the stars there written many runes. Andúril was also called Flame of the West.

 

+ Anfauglir : Another name for the wolf Carcharoth.

 

+ Anfauglith : Another name for Ard-Galen (see below).

 

+ Angainor : The chain with which Melkor was bound after he had been defeated by the Valar after the awakening of the Elves. The chain was made by Aulë.

 

+ Angband : Melkor's fortress, which was commanded by Sauron. It was built before the awakening of the Elves. In the war right after the awakening of the Elves Angband, as well as Melkor's main fortress Utumno, was destroyed, but not everything that was hidden there was dicovered. After Melkor returned from his captivity in Valinor he rebuilt Angband. At the end of the First Age Angband was finally completely destroyed.

 

+ Angrim : He was the father of Gorlim.

 

+ Angrist : The knife that Beren used ot cut off the Silmaril of Morgoth's crown. Beren took this knife from Curufin who had been its bearer in the First Age. The knife was forged by Telchar and it's name means "Iron-Cutter".

 

+ Angrod : He was the brother of Finarfin and of Galadriel. Together with his brother Aegnor (see above) he held Dorthonion. He was lost in the Dagor Bragollach.

 

+ Apanónar : The race of Men. Apanónar means "The Afterborn".

 

+ Aradan : The elvish name of Malach. It means "noble man".

 
+ Aragorn : See Aragorn on our characters page.
 

+ Araman : The name of a region that laid east beyond the Pelóri.

 

+ Arda : Arda was the name of the world and all that was in it. It was created through the Music of the Ainur and was meant to be a place for the children of Illúvatar (Men and Elves).

Originally Arda was a flat world which continents were surrounded by the ocean Ekkaia (The Encircling Sea) and seperated by Belegaer (The Great Sea). In the First Age, the region to the North and West of Middle-Earth was occupied by the country Beleriand, but Beleriand was destroyed during the War of Wrath. In the Second Age, the isle of Númenor was built in the Great Sea but after the downfall of Númenor it was destroyed again. After that the shape of Arda was changed an it was made round. Aman (see above - Valinor) was taken out of the world and from now on it could only be reached by the Elves. New land and continents were created and the world got it's last from.

 

+ Aredhel Ar-Feiniel : Aslo called the White Lady of the Noldor, Aredhel was born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees. She was the sister of Fingon and Turgon. After she had dwelt with Turgon in Gondolin for a long time she left the City and was captured by Eöl who forced her to become his wife. She bore him a son called Maeglin and when Maeglin had become adult they fled to Gondolin. They were followed by Eöl, thus they showed him the way to Gondolin. Having reached the Hidden City Eöl tried to slay his son with a poisoned dart. Aredhel sprang to take the dart and died of its poison.

 

+ Ard-Galen : The name of the green plain that laid between the northern fences of Beleriand and Angband. It was detsroyed in the Dagor Bragollach and renamed Anfauglith.

 

+ Argonath : The Argonath were two mighty statues, carved in the likenesses of Isildur and Anárion. They guarded the passage of the Great River and they marked the ancient border of Gondor. They were build by King Rómendacil II. and were also called "The Pillars of the King". The word "Argonath" means "Two noble statues".

 

+ Arien : Arien was a spirit of fire and also called the Sun-maiden. She was a Maia of Vána. When the Valar set Anar (see above), the sun, in the sky Arien was given the task to guide its course. After she had left Valinor to the sky, Arien appeared only as a flame.

 

+ Aros : A river of Beleriand that rose in the northern lands around Himring and met the Sirion at Aelin-uial (see above).

 

+ Arossiach : The ford on the upper reaches of the River Aros (see above).

 

+ Arthad : One of the twelve companions of Barahir when he became an outlaw, the others being for example Gorlim and Ragnor.

 
+ Arwen : See Arwen on our characters page.
 

+ Ascar : One of the rivers (the northernmost) that flow through Ossiriand. At its northern bank there laid the dwarf-road from the Blue Mountains. Later the treasure of Doriath sunk in the river and afterwards it was renamed Rathlóriel (Goldenbed).

 

+ Atani : The name given to Men by the Eldar. Atani means "the second people".

 

+ Avari : A name for those of the Elves who from the beginning didn't want to follow Oromë to Valinor. Many of the Avari were caught by Melkor and it is told that of these Elves Melkor breeded the Orcs.

 

+ Avathar : The name of a land between the Pelóri and the Sea. It laid south of Aman (see above) and before the Darkening of Valinor it was the dwelling place of Ungoliant.
