+ Balrog : The Balrogs were breeded by Melkor and especially in the First Age they were known well and feared. They took part in all the great battles and their king was called Gothmog. Gothmog was also the leader in the war against Gondolin. Balrogs originally were Maiars and other spirits who were given a body of fire by Melkor. They used no language, to communicate they used threatening gestures and smoke signals. In the War of Wrath at the end of the First Age most of the Balrogs were destroyed, the few who survived hide themselves in caves and under the earth, like for example the Balrog in Moria which the Fellowship of the Ring met there.

 

+ Baragund : A descendant of Bëor the Old (see below) and father of Morwen. He survived the Dagor Bragollach and afterwards lived as an outlaw in Dorthonion with his uncle Barahir (see below). Later he and his companions were slain by Sauron's forces.

 

+ Barahir : As the father of Beren (see below), Barahir was a descendant of Bëor the Old (see below). In the Dagor Bragollach he saved the life of Finrod and therefore recieved the ring which became known as Barahir's Ring (see below). Later he was slain by Morgoth's forces in Dorthonion.

 

+ Barahir's Ring : A gift to Barahir (see above) by Finrod, given to him because he had saved Finrod's life in the Dagor Bragollach. The Ring was used as a token by Barahir's son Beren when he sought Finrod's aid in the Quest of the Silmaril, and passed down by his descendants for thousands of years. It was still an heirloom of the House of Isildur in the Third Age and it was worn by Aragorn during the War of the Ring. Later Aragorn gave the ring to Arwen.

 

+ Baran : A son of Bëor (see below) who became the leader of the House of Bëor after his father became the vassal of Finrod.

 

+ Battle of the Powers : The great battle between the Valar and Melkor. It took place after the awakening of the Elves. The Valar won the battle, Melkor's fortress Utumno was destroyed and he was taken to Valinor.

 

+ Battle of Sudden Flame : Another name of the Dagor Bragollach.

 

+ Bay of Balar / Isle of Balar : The river Sirion flowed into this bay in the south of Beleriand. It is said that the Isle of Balar was originally a piece of the isle Tol Eressëa. After the havens of the Falas were lost, Círdan the Shipwright and his people dwelt on the Isle of Balar. The bay and the isle were destroyed with the rest of Beleriand at the end of the First Age.

 

+ Beleg : Also called Beleg Strongbow. He was a Sindar from Doriath. He became the best friend of Túrin and followed him when he left Doriath. When Túrin was caught by Orcs, Beleg rescued him, but was slain by Túrin because Túrin didn't realize that it was his best friend Beleg.

 

+ Belegaer : Another name for the Great Sea.

 

+ Belegost : The dwarf-city that laid in the Blue Mountains. It was founded before the First Age and destroyed in the War of Wrath. Belegost means "Great fortress", by the Elves it was called Gabilgathol.

 

+ Belegund : He was the father of Rían and also lived as an outlaw in Dorthonion together with Barahir (see above) and Baragund (see above). He was also slain by Sauron's forces.

 

+ Beleriand : In Beleriand most of the stories of the Silmarillion took place. In Beleriand there lived those Elves who followed Oromë far into the west but not to Valinor. It was a huge country. In the north and east it was bounded by mountain chains, while in in the south and west there was the Great Sea. Beleriand was destroyed in the War of Wrath, in which also Melkor was defeated. Only parts of Ossiriand remained and were later callled Lindon. See a map of Beleriand here.

 

+ Belthil : The silver tree of the Two Trees of Gondolin which were made by Turgon in memory of the Two Trees of Valinor. The other one was called Glingal.

 

+ Bëor the Old : He was the leader of the first Men that journed to Beleriand (see above) over the Blue Mountains (see below). He became the vassal of Finrod and his grandson Boromir, Lord of Ladros, founded one of the Thee Houses of the Edain.

 

+ Bereg : The great-grandson of Bëor (see above). He led the unrest of Men at their camps at Estolad, saying that their lives are too short to wasten them in the wars against Morgoth. He left Beleriand to Eriador with many Men.

 
+ Beren : To learn more about him please read the entry about Lúthien Tinúviel.
 
+ Blessed Realm : Another name for the Undying Lands.
 

+ Black Foe Of The World : Another name for Melkor.

 

+ Blue Mountain : Also called Ered Luin. In the First Age the Blue Mountains were the eastern border of Beleriand (see above). In these mountains laid the dwarf-cities Nogrod and Belegost (see above). After the destruction of Beleriand (see above) the mountains remaind but now they were in the west of Middle-Earth.

 

+ Bór : A chieftain of the Easterlings who entered Beleriand (see above) in the First Age and first allied with Morgoth. Later he became a faithful servant of Maedhros and Maglor and renounced his alliance with Morgoth. His sons were called Borlad (see below), Borlach (see below) and Borthand (see below).

 

+ Borlach : Son of Bór (see above) and brother of Borlad (see below) and Borthand (see below). He was a servant of the Noldor and was slain in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

 

+ Borlad : The eldest son of Bór (see above), his brothers were Borlach (see above) and Borthand (see below). He fought in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and was a faithful servant of the Noldor. Before he was slain in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad he himself slew the treacherous sons of Ulfang.

 

+ Borthand : The youngest son of Bór (see above), his brothers were called Borlach (see above) and Borlad (see above). He fought in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad as a faithful servant of the Noldor and took part in the slaying of Ulfang's son before he was himself slain.

 
+ Boromir : See Boromir on our characters page.
 
+ Boromir, Lord of Ladros : The Lord of Ladros and a descendant of Bëor (see above).
 
+ Boron : The father of Boromir (see above), Lord of Ladros.
 

+ Bregolas : The elder brother of Barahir (see above). He died in the Dagor Bragollach.

 

+ Bregor : He was the son of Boromir, Lord of Ladros and the father of Barahir (see above).

 

+ Brethil : A forest west of Doriath. In that forest, Túrin slew the dragon Glaurung.

 

+ Brilthor : One of the six tributaries of the Gelion. The name means "glittering torrent".

 

+ Brithiac : The ford over the northern reaches of the Sirion which laid on the margins of Dimbar.

 
+ Brithombar : The western havens of the Falas. It is named after the river Brithon.
