+ Calacirya : It is the name for a cleft that was made in the mountains of Pelóri. It was made so that the light of the Two Trees of Valinor could shine through it on the elven city Tirion.

 

+ Camlost : The name means "The Empty-handed" and was given to Beren when he returned to Thingol's halls from the Quest of the Silmaril. He had achieved the task that was given to him by Thingol, he had a Silmaril in his hand but this hand had been bitten off by Carcharoth.

 

+ Caragdűr : A rock on the north side of Gondolin. Eöl died by being flung from that rock.

 

+ Caranthir : The fourth son of Fëanor who dwelt in Thargelion in the east of Beleriand. He was slain in the assault of the sons of Fëanor on Menegroth.

 

+ Caras Galadhon / Flets : Caras Galadhon was the main town of Lórien. It layed upon a hill which was covered over and over with Mallorn trees. The Elves there didn't live in houses but in flets. Flets were wooden platforms in the trees. The town was surrounded by a green wall and on top of the highest tree there was the flet of Galadriel and Celeborn (see below) which was almost as big as the hall of a king.

 

+ Carcharoth : The wolf that bit off Beren's hand with the Silmaril in it. The burning of the jewel inside his body drove him to madness and he was finally slain by Huan during the Hunting of the Wolf. Carcharoth means "Red Maw", he was also called Anfauglir, which means "Jaws of Thirst".

 
+ Celeborn, the White Tree : See Celeborn on our characters page.

The White Tree of Tol Eressëa. It was a seedling of Galathilion, the White Tree that grew in Tirion. The White Tree of Númenor, Nimloth, was a seedling of Celeborn.

 

+ Celebrimbor : Being born in the First Age, Celebrimbor was a Noldor and the son of Curufin (see below). Celebrimbor was the leader of the Elves of Eregion and played an important part in the forging of the Rings of Power. He was slain the year 1697 of the Second Age.

 

+ Celegorm : He was the third son of Fëanor and born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees. In Valinor he was a friend Oromë, from him he learnt the tongues of the animals and got the great hound Huan as a gift. After the Oath of Fëanor he left Valinor together with his father and went to Middle-Earth. After his father died in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath he jourenyed to Himlad and stayed there with his brother Curufin (see below) for more than 450 years. But in the Dagor Bragollach Morgoth's Orcs overran Celegorm's land and he and his brother fled to Nargothrond. When Beren came to Nargothrond to ask for help in his quest for the Silmaril, Celegorm and Curufin left Nargothrond. While out hunting on the Guarded Plain, they discovered Lúthiene who was seeking for Beren. Celegorm saw that to be wedded to the daughter of one of the greatest kings in Beleriand would be a great source of power, and so he tricked Lúthien into returning to Nargothrond with him There he imprisoned her and sent false messages to Thingol, pursuing his suit. But Celegorm's hound, Huan, disobeyed his master, and help Lúthien to escape from the brothers. Later the lies of Celegorm and Curufin were exposed and they were exiled from Nargothrond. The brothers now travelled through Beleriand and came to the lands of Maedhros. But after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad Celegorm fled with his brothers to the lands below Mount Dolmed, in the far east of Beleriand. In the assault of the sons of Fëanor on Menegroth, Celegorm was slain by Dior.

 

+ Celon : A tributary of the Aros. It rose near Himring and met the Aros near Doriath.

 

+ Children of Ilúvatar : The children of Ilúvatar were the Elves and Men.

 

+ Círdan the Shipwright : Círdan was the lord of the Teleri in Middle-Earth, also called the Falathrim. When most of Teleri were brought to Valinor by Ulmo, Círdan and some of the Teleri stayed in Middle- Earth and settled down in the Bay of Balar. At the end of the First Age, when Beleriand was destroyed, Círdan founded the Grey Havens on the Gulf of Lhűn. During the Second Age Círdan get on of the three Elven-rings of power, from now on Círdan beared Narya, the Ring of Fire. In the Third Age, when the wizards arrived in Middle-Earth, he passed Narya to Gandalf. During all the ages Círdan was the master of the Grey Havens and at the end of the Third Age , when Sauron was defeated, he saw the White Ship with all the ringbearers on it sailing into the West.

 

+ Cirith Ninniach : A rocky pass that led through the north-western mountains of Middle-Earth. It was also called the Rainbow cleft.

 

+ Cirth : The elvish word for "runes".

 

+ Corollairë : Another name for Ezellohar.

 

+ Crissaegrim : A part of the Encircling Mountains which laid around the city Gondolin. From the heights of the Crissaegrim Thorondor and his Eagles guarded Gondolin.

 

+ Cuivienen : Also called the Water of Awakening. It layed in the east of Middle-Earth. There the first Elves awoke and began to dwell in Middle-Earth.

 

+ Curufin : He was the father of Celebrimbor and the fifth son of Fëanor. He was slain in the assault on Menegroth.

 

+ Curufinwë : Another name for Fëanor. Curufinwë was the name given to Fëanor by his father Finwë but his mother Míriel called him Fëanor.
