+ Daeron : He was known for the development of the cirth, the runes that were used especially by the Dwarves. Also Daeron was a loremaster of Thingol.

 

+ Dagnir : One of the twelve companions of Barahir of Dorthonion.

 

+ Dagor Aglareb : The third great battle in the Wars of Beleriand. It was also called the glorious battle and fought between Morgoth's Orcs and the armies of Fingolfin and Maedhros.

 

+ Dagor Bragollach : Also called the Battle of Sudden Flame it lasted from winter in the year 455 of the First Age until summer in the year 456 of the First Age and was the fourth battle of the Wars of Beleriand. In the battle Morgoth broke the Siege of Angband by sending out flames from Angband over Ard-galen and commanding Orcs, dragons and Balrogs to attact the fortresses of Angrod and Aegnor. From there the battle spread over whole Beleriand.

 

+ Dagor-nuin-giliath : Also called the battle-under-stars. It was fought before the rising of the Moon between Fëanor and his people, who had just returned to Middle-Earth from Valinor, and Morgoth's forces. The Elves were victorius but Fëanor was slain by a Balrog.

 

+ Dairuin : One of the twelve companions that became outlaws together with Barahir, the others being for exmaple Ragnor, Gorlim and Gildor.

 

+ Dark Elf : Another name for Eöl.

 

+ Dark Elves : Also called the Moriquendi, the Dark-Elves are those Elves that didn't travel to Valinor or were lost on the Great Journey. They never saw the light of the Two Trees of Valinor.

 

+ Darkening of Valinor : The destruction of the Two Trees of Valinor by Melkor and Ungoliant, shortly before the beginning of the First Age.

 

+ Deep Elves : A name for the part of the Noldor that Finwë led into Valinor.

 
+ Denethor II : See Denethor II on our characters section.
 

+ Denethor, son of Lenwë : Denethor, son of Lenwë, was a Nandor and led his people westwards into Ossiriand. There they became known as the the Laiquendi, the Green-Elves.

 

+ Dimbar : A land which laid in the north of Beleriand, west of it laid the Forest of Brethil, east of it laid Neldoreth.

 

+ Dor-Caranthir : Another name for Thargelion. The name means "Caranthir's land".

 

+ Doriath : It was the land of the Sindar which layed in the centre of Middle-Earth and was founded by Thingol and Melian. Melian bewitched the land so that everybody who was not allowed to enter it would get lost. Men were at first not allowed to enter Doriath, but after the marriage of Beren and Luthien some exceptions were made.

 

+ Dor-lómin : The land that laid northwest of Beleriand. It was ruled by the Men of the House of Hador.

 

+ Dor-nu Fauglith : It is another name for Anfauglith and means "Land under choking Ash".

 

+ Dorthonion : A highland region in the north of Beleriand and in the south of Ard-Galen. It belonged to Finrod but was ruled by Angrod and Aegnor, the brothers of Finrod. Dorthonion was destroyed by Morgoth in the Dagor Bragollach, after which it was renamed Taur-nu-Fuin. Later Sauron lived there for a while.

 

+ Draugluin : A wolf of Sauron that was slain by Huan. He was also called Sire of the Werewolves.

 

+ Dry River : The name of the dry bed of a former tributary of the Sirion. At the northern end of ist gully laid the entrance to Gondolin.

 

+ Duilwen : One of the six tributaries of the Gelion, the others being the Acar, the Thalos, the Brilthor, the Adurant and the Legolin. The name means "fresh river".

 

+ Durin I the Deathless : Durin I was the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves who were made by the Vala Aule (see also the informations about the Dwarves at our Races section.) He and the other Fathers of the Dwarves slept under the mountains of Middle-Earth until the awakeness of the Elves. When he awoke, Durin I travelled through Middle-Earth and finally reached the Mirrormere where he founded Moria (see entry Moria.) Durin I lived a long life but even if he was called the deathless he was not immortal. He died at the end of the First Age.
