+ Hador, Stewart of Gondor : The seventh steward of Gondor who inherited the Stewardship from his father Túrin and was followed by his son Baharir. He was named after Hador Lórindol (see below) and ruled Gondor for 117 years.

 

+ Hador Lórindol : Born in the year 389 of the First Age he was the son of Hathol (see below) and a descendant of Malach. He ruled Dor-lómin until the Dagor Bragollach in which he was slain.

 

+ Haladin : After the people of Bëor the Haladin were the second of the three peoples of Men that journed into Beleriand. They first dwelt in Thargelion but after they had been attacked by Orcs several times they were led by Haleth (see below) into the Forest of Brethil. The Haladin took part in the Dagor Bragollach and in Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

 

+ Haldad : After the first Men – later called the Haladin (see above) - had crossed the Blue Mountains they dwelt int Thargelion without having a single leader. But during an attack of Orcs, Haldad became the leader. He built a defensive stockade between the rivers Gelion and Ascar but the Orcs besieged him and his people because they ran out of food. Haldad, and also his son Haldar (see below), were slain by Orcs, but his daughter Haleth (see below) took up the leadership and led the Haladin into the Forest of Brethil.

 

+ Haldar : The son of Haldad (see above), he was slain together with his father in as assault of Orcs. His twin sister Haleth (see below) took up the leadership over the Haladin (see below) after his death.

 

+ Haldir : He was a marchwarden of the Galadhrim of Lórien. He guarded the nothern borders of Lórien and led the Fellowship of the Ring to Caras Galadhon.

 

+ Haleth : The daugher of Haldad (see above) who became the leader of the Haladin (see above) after her father and brother were slain in an assault of Orcs. She led her people into the Forest of Brethil. After her death a green mound was raised over her by her people. It was called Tûr Haretha.

 

+ Hall of Waiting : The halls of the Valar Mandos, where the souls of the Elves were sent after they had been slain or after they had died by a broken heart.

 

+ Halmir : He was the son of Haldan. At the time of the Dagor Bragollach he was the lord of the People of Haleth (see above). Together with Beleg he fought against the Orcs and gave the southern lands a respite from the defeats in the north. His son was called Haldir (see above).

 

+ Hammer of the Underworld : Another name for Grond.

 

+ Hareth : She was the daughter of Halmir (see above) and Glóredhel and became the wife of Galdor. She gave birth to Húrin and Huor (see below).

 

+ Hathaldir : One of the twelve outlaws that followed Barahir and Beren. Hathaldir was called The Young.

 

+ Hathol : A son of Magor. Not much is known about his life, but his son was Hador Lórindol (see above) who became the Lord of Dor-lómin.

 

+ Haud-en-Arwen : Another name for the Tûr Haretha.

 

+ Helcaraxë : The strait in the north between Middle-Earth and Aman which was coverd with ice. Because Fëanor didn't send the ships of the Teleri back to Fingolfin, Fingolfin and his people were forced to cross the Helcaraxë and reached Middle-Earth on this way.

 

+ Hildor : Another name given to Men by the Eldar. It means "the Followers".

 

+ Hildórien : A land in the east of Middle-Earth, where the first men awoke at Cuivienen.

 

+ Himlad : The land between the Aros and the Celon. It was held by Celegorm and Curufin until the Dagor Bragollach after which it was taken by Orcs.

 

+ Himring : A hill in the northeast of Beleriand on which Maedhros had his fortress. When Beleriand was drowned at the end of the First Age Himring remained above the waves.

 

+ Hirilorn : The great beech-tree in Doriath with three trunks in which Lúthien was imprisoned. The name means "Tree of the Lady".

 

+ Hither Lands : Another name for Middle-Earth.

 

+ Hithlum : The land south of Ard-galen. In the west there laid the Ered Lómin, in the east there laid the Ered Wethrin. In that region Fingolfin and Fingon founded their realms. After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad the land was given to the Easterlings by Morgoth.

 
+ Hobbit : See our Hobbits page.
 
+ Hobbiton : It is the name of one of the Hobbit villages, where Frodo lived.
 
+ Huntsman of the Valar : A title of Oromë.
 

+ Huan : The Hound of Valinor who left Aman with the Noldor. He was a loyal companion of Celegorm until Celegorm betrayed Lúthien in Nargothrond. After that Huan helped Lúthien and Beren in the Quest of the Silmaril. Huan defeated Sauron at the gates of Tol-in-Gaurhoth and slew Carcharoth. He died in the year 469 of the First Age.

 

+ Hunting of the Wolf : After the wolf Carcharoth had bitten off Beren's hand with the Silmaril in it, the Silmaril burned the inwards of the wolf. Driven mad the wolf chased through Beleriand and Thingol set out to hunt him. He was joind by Mablung of the Heavy Hand, Beleg, Beren and Huan (see above), the Hound of Valinor, who finally slew the wolf. From the wolf's belly Thingol recovered the Silmaril.

 

+ Huor : A Man of Dor-lómin and the House of Hador (see above), born in the year 442 of the First Age and slain in the year 471 of the First Age. He was the grandfather of Eärendil. Huor was the younger son of Galdor, Lord of Dor-lómin, and grandson of Hador Lórindel (see above). He had one brother, Húrin (see below), with whom he took part in the Dagor Bragollach and was seperated from the main force. The two brothers were saved by Thorondor who brought them to Gondolin. After a year they returned to Dor-lómin where Huor wedded Rían. Together they had one son, called Tuor. Later Húrin and his brother Huor went again to war togehter and took part in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, in which Huor was slain.

 

+ Húrin : He was the eldest son of Galdor and the Lord of Dor-lómin. In the battle of Nirnaeth Arnoediad, he was caught by Morgoth who wanted to get Húrin alive because there were rumors that Húrin once visited the secret hidden town Gondolin which Morgoth wanted to find. Indeed Húrin once visited Gondolin, but he swore not to tell anyone where it lies, and so he didn't tell Morgoth anything about it. Therefore Morgoth cursed him and his kind and sat him on a hill from which Húrin was forced to see all that happened to his son Túrin and his wife Morwen without being able to move or to close the eyes. After Túrin's death Morgoth released Húrin. Húrin went to the grave of his children Túrin and Nienor and there met his wife Morwen. But Morwen died soon and Húrin went to Nargothrond where he met Mîm. He slaid him because Mîm once betrayed Túrin. Finally after some years Húrin commited suicide.

 

+ Hyarmentir : The highest mountain of Avathar. From the top of that mountain, Melkor and Ungoliant watched the Guarded Realm before the Darkening of Valinor.
