+ Nahar : The name of the horse of Oromë, the Huntsman of the Valar. At the day Nahar's coat was white but in the night it shimmered in silver.

 

+ Námo : Another name of the Valar Mandos.

 

+ Nandor : They were part of the Teleri. When the Teleri wandered from Cuivienen during the Great Journey of the Elves to the west, they reached the Misty Mountains. There some of them left the big group because they liked the land they were just wandering in. They started to wander along the River Andúin. These Elves were called the Nandor. Their leader was Lenwë. The Nandor wandered to the coast, from there to the White Mountains until they finally settled down in Ossiriand. The Nandor didn't join any battle. They prefer to live secrelty and peacefully. Because of the colour of their clothes they were also called the Green-Elves (Laiquendi).

 

+ Nan Dungortheb : A valley wich laid between the Ered Gorgoroth and Doriath. Travellers in these land often died because Sauron and his creatures killed most of the people who entered the valley and because the water in that region was poisoned.

 

+ Nan Elmoth : A dark wood in East Beleriand. In this wood Thingol met Melian for the first time.

 

+ Nan Tathren : See the Land of Willows for more information.

 

+ Nargothrond : The stronghold Nargothrond was founded by Finrod Felagund and could only be reached by a narrow path along the high banks of the river Narog. Nargothrond was for a long time ruled by Finrod and later by Orodreth. When Túrin came to Nargothrond he persuaded the Elves to change their policy and fight openly against Morgoth and his servants. That was how Morgoth discovered Nargothrond and sent out Glaurung to destroy it.

 

+ Narog : The greatest of the tributaries of the River Sirion.

 

+ Narsil : Narsil was the name of Elendil's sword. It was destroyed when Elendil fought against Sauron. With one of the shards Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. A squire of Isildur saved the shards and brought them to Rivendell. There they were kept by the Elves for Isildur's heir.

 

+ Nauglámir : The Necklace of the Dwarves which origially had been made for Finrod. Thingol sat the Silmaril recovered by Beren and Lúthien in that necklace.

 

+ Naugrim : The name that the Elves gave to the Dwarves.

 
+ Nazgûl : See the Nazgûl on our characters page.
 

+ Neldoreth : The name of the great forest that laid at the banks of the River Esgalduin and that formed the northern part of the Kindom of Doriath.

 

+ Nenning : A river in Beleriand that rose in the Ered Wethrin and met the sea at Eglarest, one of the two great Havens of the Falas. The river marked the border between the land of Círdan and Nargothrond (see above).

 

+ Nerdanel : The wife of Fëanor. She always tried to make her husband act wisely.

 

+ Nessa : Wife of Tulkas and sister of Oromë. She loved the deers and they followed her whenever she went into the wild, but she was able to outrun them.

 

+ Nevrath : A land at the north-western coast of Middle-Earth during the First Age. Turgon and his people dwelled there until they moved to Gondolin. Nevrast was destroyed in the War of Wrath.

 

+ Nienna : Nienna was a sister of the Fëanturi who dwelt alone. She was acquainted with grief and mourned for every wound that Arda had suffered in the marring of Melkor.

 

+ Nienor Níniel : Nienor was the daughter of Húrin and Morwen and the sister of Túrin. To learn more about her please read the entry about Túrin.

 

+ Nimloth : The White Tree that grew in Númenor. It was a seedling of Celeborn, the White Tree of Tirion. Nimloth was destroyed by Sauron, but before it was destroyed, Isildur was able to save a fruit from it. This fruit Isildur planted in the courts of Minas Tirith.

 

+ Niphredil : A flower that grew in Lórien and also when Lúthien was born.

 

+ Nirnaeth Arnoediad : Also called the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. It was the fifth of the Great Battles of Beleriand. The Noldor (see entry below) and the Humans tried to fight against Morgoth but they failed because Morgoth had been warned by his spies.

 

+ Nogrod : The second dwarf-city in the Blue Mountains, the first one was Belegost. Nogrod laid south of it. By the Elves Nogord was called Tumumzahar.

 

+ Noldor : Also called High-Elves. The second clan of three who travelled to Aman. They lived in Aman for a long time but after the Darkening of Valinor, Finwë, their king, was slain by Melkor who had stolen the Silmarils and the Noldor went back to Middle-Earth to fight against Melkor.

 

+ Nóm: The name of Finrod given to him by the Men. It means "wisdom".
