+ Silmaril : The three great jewels made by Fëanor. In these jewels he locked the great light of the Two Trees of Valinor. The jewels were made of a metal which composition only Fëanor knew. He called the metal Silima and the jewels Silmarili. They glew with a strong light. Varda consecrated the jewels so that no bad hand should touch them in the future. Melkor stole the jewels (he burned his hands by touching them) and fled with them to Angband. Fëanor swore to recover the Silmarils. Many of the Noldor followed thim and their hopelaess war against Morgoth began. During the First Age one Silmaril was recovered from Morgoth's crown by Beren and Lúthien. This stone was borne by Eärendil when he sailed into the West to the Valar. When the Valar saw that they sent a mighty force to Middle-Earth and Morgoth was defeated. That way all the Silmaril were recovered. But it came that Maedhros and Maglor, two sons of Fëanor stole the jewels from the Valar again. But their evil deeds in pursuance of the jewels drove them into madness : Maedhros cast himself into a fiery chasm with one of the Silmarils and Maglor threw the other one into the sea. So only one Silmaril remained in the world, bound to Eärendil's brow as he sails the heavens, the morning and the evening star. |
