Uinen : Uinen was a Maia and the spouse of Ossë. She was also called Lady of the Seas. It is said that her hair spread through the waters of all the oceans of the world. The seafarers prayed to her while the wifes of the seafarers saw in her a rival who stole them their men. |
Uldor : Also called "The Accursed", he was the youngest son of Ulfang (see below) and brother of Ulwarth and Ulfast (see below). He betrayed the Elves in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and was slain by Maglor. |
Ulfang : The second great chieftain of the Easterlings, the other one being Bór. Ulfang fought in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and first followed the banner of Caranthir. But then he brought the victory to Morgoth when he suddenly turned against the forces of the Elves. Ulfang was also called "The Black" and his sons were Ulfast (see below), Ulwarth (see below) and Uldor (see above). |
Ulfast : He was the son of Ulfang (see above). In the Nirnaeth Arnoediad he claimed to be a servant of Caranthir but betrayed him and thus brought the victory to Morgoth. He had two brothers, Ulwarth (see below) and Uldor (see above) and was slain by the sons of Bór (see above). |
Ulwrath : Son of Ulfang (see above) and brother of Ulfast (see above) and Uldor (see above). He fought in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad as a servant of Caranthir but he was treacharous and brought Morgoth the victory by turning against the forces of the Elves. Because of this betrayal he was slain by the sons of Bór (see above). |
Undying Lands : Another name for Aman. At least the part where the Valar lived and the Isle Tol Eressëa were called like this. |
Ungoliant : Ungoliant was the first spider and the mother of all spiders. She helped Melkor to destroy the Two Trees of Valinor. One of her most famous children was Shelob, a spider that dwelt at the borders of Mordor. |
Urthel : One of the twelve outlaws that followed Barahir. |
| + Uruk-Hai : See the Uruk-Hai on our characters page. |
Urúloki : The name for the dragons which were Morgoth's servants. Glaurung was the Father of the Dragons. |
Utumno : Utumno was also called Udûn and it was the first fortress of Melkor which he built in the north of Middle-Earth. It was destroyed in the war the Valar made against Melkor at the time of the Awakening of the Elves. |
