:: Of The Return Of The Noldor ::

When Fëanor and his sons had landed in Lammoth, the flames of the burning of the ships at Losgar were also seen by Morgoth and his orc spies. Fëanor and his sons went up the long Firth of Drengist and passed into Hithlum until they finally made their encampment in Mithrim. There on the grey fields of Mithrim was fought the Second Battle in the Wars of Beleriand, Dagor-nuin-Giliath it was named, the battle under stars. The Noldor were victorius and the Orcs fled away from them. Morgoth also sent Balrogs to fight against Fëanor, but they were defeated, too, though Fëanor was badly wounded and died soon after that battle.

"But he had neither burial nor tomb, for so fiery was his spirit, that as it sped his body fell to ash and was borne away like smoke and his likeness has never again appeared in Arda, neither has his spirit left the halls of Mandos. Thus ended the mightiest of the Noldor, of whose deeds came both their greatest renown and their mnost grievous one."

In Mithrim the Noldor met Grey-Elves and from them they learned about Elu Thingol and the Girdle of Melian. At that time Maedhros, son of Fëanor, was captured by Morgoth and brought to Angband, and Morgoth sent word to the other sons of Fëanor that he would not set him free until the Noldor would forsake their war and return into the West. But the Noldor knew that Morgoth would betray them and they didn't do what they were asked by Morgoth. Therefore Morgoth took Maedhros and hung him from the face of a precipice upon Thangorodrim, and he was caught to the rock by the wrist of his right hand in a band of steel.

Now Fingolfin arrived in Middle-Earth and he and his people make their first camp at the northern shores of Lake Mithrim. Fëanor's people now removed their camp to the southern shore, so that the lake would lay between them. Though many of Fëanor's people were ashamed for what had happened at Losgar they did not dare to welcome Fingolfin and his people. Morgoth, seeing the devision of his foes, laughed and smoke could be seen raising from Angband.

Now Fingon, son of Fingolfin, resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor before the enemy should be ready for war. Because he has always been a true friend of Maedhros he sat out alone to search for him and reached Angband. Thus he found Maedhros but he could not climb the moutain his friend hung on.

"Maedhros therefore, being in anguish without hope, begged Fingon to shoot him with his bow; and Fingon strung an arrow and bent his bow. And seeing no better hope he cried to Manwë, saying : O King to whom all birds are dear, speed now his feathered shaft, and recall some pitty for the Noldor in their need !"

His prayer was answered swiftly as Manwë had sent forth the Eagles, commanding them to keep watch upon Morgoth. Now as Fingon bent his bow there flew down Thorondor, King of the Eagles, and bore Fingon to the rock where Maedhros hung. There Fingon cut off the hand of Maedhros and Thorondor bore them back to Mithrim. Thus the hatred between the Houses of Fingolfin and Fëanor was assuaged and Maedhros waived his claim for kingship over all the Noldor.

Now the united Noldor began to guard Angband and to explore Beleriand. Thus Angrod, son of Finarfin came to Menegroth and Thingol said to him :

"Thus shall you speak for me to those who sent you. In Hithlum the Noldor have leave to dwell, and in the highlands of Dorthonion, and in the lands east of Doriath, that are empty and wild. But elsewhere there are many of my people, and I would no have them restrained of their freedom, still less ousted from their homes. Beware therefore how you princes of the West bear yourselves, for I am the Lord of Beleriand, and all who seek to dwell there shall hear my word. Into Doriath none shall come to abide but only such as I call as guests, or who seek me in great need."

That seemingly cold welcome lead the Noldor into another arguement, for Maedhros and his people wanted to accept the decision of Thingol while the sons of Fëanor and especially Caranthir didn't accept Thingol as their ruler. Thus Maedhros and his people left Hithlum and went eastwards where they finally settled down close to Angband.

Caranthir and his people now went beyond the upper waters of Gelion and climbed the Ered Luin where they also met the Dwarves.

When twenty years of the Sun had passed Fingolfin made a great feast which was called the Feats of Reuniting, for also Maedhors and his people as well as some Green-Elves and some of the folk of the Havens came to that feast. From Doriath there came just two messengers, Mablung and Daeron. In those days there was joy between the Sun and the Moon and all the lands were glad.

Many years later Finrod and Galadriel visited Thingol and made friendship with him and near Menegroth Finrod began to build the stronghold Nargothrond. He was aided by the Dwarves and in that time the Nauglamir, the Necklace of the Dwarves, was made for him. Galadriel didn't went with her brother to Nargothrond for in Doriath there dwelt Celebron and there was great love between them.

At the same time, Turgon discovered the hidden vale of Tumladen in the Encircling mountains and though he started to make plans for building a city there he didn't tell anyone about it.

Now Morgoth heared from his Orcs that the Noldor were wondering abroad with little thought of war and he attacked them again. That was the third great battle of the Wars of Beleriand, the Dagor Aglareb. But again the Noldor were victorious.
