| :: Of The Silmaril and the Unrest of The Noldor :: |
|
"In that time were made those things that afterwards were most renowned of all the works of the Elves." It came to pass that Fëanor thought about how he could keep the light of the Trees for the future and secretly he made the Silmarils. The Silmarils were two great jewels, but it was not known of what substance they were made. They couldn't be destroyed and in them was a fire which was made of the light of the Trees. "Therefore even in the darkness of the deepest treasury the Silmarils of their own radiance shone like the stars of Varda; and yet, as were they indeed living things, they rejoiced in light and recieved it and gave it back in hues more marvellous than before." Varda hallowed the Silmarils so that no unclean hand might touch it and Mandos foretold that the fates of Arda are bound to them. Also Melkor desired to get the Silmarils and he started to tell lies to the Elves so that the friendship between the Elves and the Valar would be destroyed. "Whispers went abroad that the Valar had brought the Eldar to Aman because of their jealousy, fearing that the beauty of the Quendi and the makers' power that Ilúvatar had bequeathed to them would grow too great for the Valar to govern, as the Elves waxed and spread over the wide lands of the world." That way the peace of Valinor was poisoned, but Melkor was not yet able to get the Silmarils. Fëanor began to love the Silmarils with a greedy love and he showed them only to his father and his sons. Meanwhile Melkor went on spreading new lies. "Whispers came to Fëanor that Fingolfin and his sons were plotting to usurp the leadership of Finwë and of the elder line of Fëanor, and to supplant them by the leave of the Valar; for the Valar were ill-pleased that the Silmarils lay in Tirion and were not committed to their keeping." Pride and anger awoke among the Noldor because of Melkor's lies and the Noldor began to smith weapons. Finally Fëanor began openly to speak words of rebellion against the Valar and also Fëanor and his brother Fingolfin had a huge arguement. Now the Valar of course didn't miss the unrest of the Noldor and they judged that Fëanor was the mover of discontent. Finally Fëanor was summoned to appear before the Valar. By answering all the questions of the Valar, Fëanor and the Valar finally found out that Melkor's lies were the reason for all that had happened. But also Fëanor was not held guiltless and Manwë said to him: "Thou speakest of thraldom. If thraldom it be, thou canst not escape it : For Manwë is King of Arda, and not of Aman only. And this deed was unlawful, wether in Aman or not in Aman. Therefore this doom is now made : for twelve years thou shalt leave Tirion where this threat was uttered. In that time take counsel with thyself and remember who and what thou art. But after that time this matter shall be set in peace and held redressed, if other will release thee." That was how Fëanor and his seven sons came to leave Valmar. Northward in Valinor, they built the stronghold Formenos and there they also hid the Silmarils. Also Melkor came to Formenos, unseen by the Valar. He offered Fëanor to bring him out of Valinor but Fëanor did not trust him and chased him away instead. "Thus Melkor departed from Valinor, and for a while the Two Trees shone again unshadowed and the land was filled with light." |
