:: Tolkien's One Ring ::
The inscription which is inscribed on the One Ring says :

"Ash nazg durbatulūk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulūk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul"

"One Ring to Rule them all, One Ring to Find them. One Ring to Bring them all, and in the Darkness Bind them."

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for the Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
"

"The letters are Elvish, of an ancient mode, but the language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here." (Gandalf)

In the first years of the Second Age a nice and polite man with a big knowledge wandered through Middle-Earth. He called himself Annatar, Lord of the Gifts. He was not mean with advice and gifts and therefore the Men soon liked him very much. For the dwarves he was a good buisnes partner, only the Elves didn't trust him. But the man courted them very strongly and finally the Noldor (except Galadriel and Celeborn) start to trust him. He taught the Noldor how to forge magic rings and the Elves, especially Celebrimbor, heir of Feanor, forged many Rings of Power with different magical characteristics. The rings were made of gold and mithril.

Secretly, Annatar forged the One Ring and all the other rings which were forged by the Elves stood under the influence of the One Ring. While he was wearing the One Ring, Annatar was able to see everything that the other ring-bearers were doing and he could read their thoughts.

At first no one noticed that the One Ring was existing and the other Rings of Power brought their bearers a long life. But then Annatar used the One Ring. Celebrimbor noticed that and finally realized that Annatar was nobody else but Sauron. Celebrimbor hid the Three Rings of the Elves (which were called Vilya, Nenya and Narya) because he knew that Sauron would become an undefeatable Dark Lord if he would get all the rings.

Sauron now started a war and captured all the Rings of Power except the three elven ones. In the later years of the Second Age, Sauron gave the rings to these people who he wanted to make his underlings.

Seven rings he gave to the Dwarves. But the Dwarves only became more and more greedy and the Dark Power of Sauron had not much influence on them because of their stubborness.

Nine rings he gave to the Men. These nine men became the Great Kings of Men. They lived very long but they were easy to influence and soon they became servants of Sauron. They became shadows and later they were called the Nazgūl.

At the beginning of the Third Age, Sauron was defeated by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. In a terrible battle against Sauron, Isildur, Son of Elendil, was able to cut the One Ring off Sauron's hand. But instead of destroying the Ring, he kept it for himself. But the Ring betrayed him. Isildur was killed by Orcs and the Ring was lost int the Great River Andśin.

Sauron tried to get back the other rings. Some of the rings of the Dwarves had been eaten by dragons. The left ones he got back. The nine rings of the Men were already under his inlfuence because the former bearers were now the Nazgūl. But Sauron never got the three rings of the Elves. Finally, Sauron found out that the One Ring had been found by Gollum and since then he was searching for it day and night.
