Of The Valar

The Valar were those of the Ainur who descended into the world. There were seven Lords of the Valar and also seven Queens, and those were their names :

Lords

Queens

Manwë

Varda

Ulmo

Yavanna

Aulë

Nienna

Oromë

Estë

Mandos

Vairë

Lórien

Vána

Tulkas

Nessa

Melkor wasn't counted as a Valar anymore, because his only wish was it to rule the world alone. Below are little descriptions of each of the Valar.

Manwë

Varda

Brother of Melkor in the thought of Ilúvatar and mightiest of the Valar.

His delight were the winds and the clouds and all the regions of the air.

His second name is Súlimo, Lord of the Breath of Arda.

She dwelt with Manwë and was called Lady of the Stars.

She was the most beautiful of the Valar because the light of Ilúvatar lived still in her face. The light is her power and her joy.

The Elves loved Varda the most, they called her Elbereth.

Together Manwë and Varda lived upon Oiolossë, the uttermost tower of Taniquetil, which was the highest mountain on earth.

Ulmo

The Lord of the Water who dwelt alone. He didn't stay anywhere for a long time and only seldom he clothed himself in a body. He was next in might to Manwë.

Ulmo spoke to those who dwelt in Middle-Earth with a voice that was only heard as the music of water.

Aulë

Yavanna

Almost as mighty as Ulmo. He was the Lord over all the substances of which Arda was made.

He was also called Aulë, the Smith, and he was a good friend of the Noldor.

Wife of Aulë, also called Giver of the Fruits.

She was the lover of all things that grew on earth and she had all their countless forms in her mind.

Her second name was Kementári, Queen of the Earth.

Fëanturi

Mandos and Lórien, also called the Fëanturi, were brothers. Their real names were Námo and Irmo. Mandos and Lórien were originally the names of the places where they dwelt.

Namó

Vairë

The elder of the brothers who dwelt in Mandos.

Keeper of the House of the Dead, summoner of the spirits of the slain. Also called Doomsman of the Valar.

Wife of Namó, also called the Weaver

She wove all the things that had ever been in time into her storried webs and the halls of Mandos were clothed with them.

Irmo Estë

The younger brother of Namó.

Master of visions and dreams who dwelt in the gardens of Lórien which were the fairest of all places in the world.

Irmo's wife, also called the Gentle.

She was the healer of hurst and wearniness.

Nienna

Nienna was a sister of the Fëanturi who dwelt alone. She was acquainted with grief and mourned for every wound that Arda had suffered in the marring of Melkor.

Tulkas

Nessa

He was the strongest but not the most powerful of the Valar and he was also called Astaldo, the Valiant.

He loved wrestling and contests of strength and he was tireless. His only weapons were his hands.

Wife of Tulkas and sister of Oromë.

She loved the deers and they followed her whenever she went into the wild, but she was able to outrun them.

Oromë Vaná

Hunter of monsters and fell beasts.

He loved horses, hounds and trees and was also called Tauron, Lord of the Forests.

Oromë's wife, also called the Ever-young.

All flowers sprang when she passed, and all the birds sang at her coming. Younger sister of Yavanna.

Of The Maiar

The Maiar were spririts that came to Earth with the Valar. They were of the same order but of less degree, and the were servants and helpers for the Valar. Only some of the Maiar were known by name :

Ilmarë, handmaid of Varda

Eönwë, banner-bearer and herald of Manwë

Ossë, a varsal of Ulmo

Melian, who served Vána and Estë

Wisest of the Maiar was Olórin, who dwelt in Lórien and who was a friend of all the children of Ilúvatar.

Of The Enemies

Last of all is set the name of Melkor, whom the Noldor called Morgoth, the Dark Enemy of the World. Great might was given to him by Ilúvatar but from the beginning, Melkor only tried to use this might to become the only ruler of the world.

Melkor made many Maiar become his servants and the most powerful of these servants were the Balrogs, demons of terror. The leader of his servants was Sauron, also called Gorthaur, the Cruel.
