Through the thin haze of acrid smoke resonates the heartbeat of the smithy. Clink, clink, clink tap .tap, clink tap .tap. The hammer blows of the smith forging hot metal on the face of an anvil are the life of this dark and hallowed place.
The bellows rhythmically breathe life to the fire in time with hammering. Hot coals in the depths of the forge glow a deep red like the maw of some ancient dragon, casting flickering light across the walls, where shadows of the hanging tools dance as if replaying some long-
Since mankind first learned to take metals from the earth and form it into usable items, be it weapons, armour, tools or utensils, smiths have always had a central role in our early societies. The art of the smith was considered sacred in some places as it combined all four of the elements at once...iron and coal brought from the depths of the earth... air, flowing through the bellows and feeding the fire to heat the metal... water, that quenches and tempers the hot iron.
Over time, as skills and demands of society increased, the smiths began to specialize into smaller fields such as sword smithing, and armoury. These specialists created the arms and armour that were carried into battle by the warriors.
It is the great warriors that typically capture our attention and captivate us with their tales of valor and great deeds. They inspire us to achieve things we may not believe that we are capable of. As children, we often looked up to them, admired them, and emulated them.
J.R.R. Tolkien created the world of Middle-earth and filled it with great heroes, wonderful weapons and armour. This section of the War of the Ring is inspired by these characters as well as the arms and armour that they bore. Contained within these pages, you will find information on the different styles of weapons, armour and equipment presented by Tolkien, as well as information on the recent Lord of the Rings films.
I, Orc, on behalf of myself and all the wonderful people here at War of the Ring, would like to welcome you to our little section we call:
