View Full Version : Elvish Sticky Notes

Back when my brother first started learning Spanish he would place sticky notes all over the house with Spanish words on them. (For instance, he would put a sticky that said "la puerta" on all the doors!) :rolleyes:
Well I have taken his idea and adapted it to serve our Elvish learning needs. In this thread I will post 3 to 4 words a day that you can then write on a sticky note and stick it to the object it describes. Don't write the English translation, just the Elvish. That way you will learn the word by association (heck, my brother even put a sticky that said "el gato negro" on our cat!).lol
Ok, here we go. The first words are "door", "window", "table" and "chair".
I will post both the Sindarin and the Quenya (if I know both! If I don't maybe Isiltįri does?;) ). You can choose which one you want to learn first and only write stickies for that form, or you can learn both at the same time. Put a large "S" or a large "Q" in front of the word to signify Sindarin or Quenya. (I did this, and I was amazed at how quickly I Iearned the difference between Sindarin and Quenya!
Alright, enough talk! Here are the words (in Elvish this time!)
door = Q. fendassė [FEN-das-seh] S. fen [fen] :rolleyes:
window = Q. henet [HEN-et] S. henneth [HEN-neth]
table = Q. paluhta [PAL-oo-tah] (I think :blush: ) S. ? sorry! don't know!
chair = Q. hamba [HOM-bah] S. ? sorry again!
OK, there you go. If ever I find those Sindarin words I will let you know. :cool:
Let's keep this thread reserved just for this. If you have any questions please ask them in the threads entitled "The Sindarin Thread", "The Quenya Thread", or "In Elvish Please". Thanks!

What a cool idea, Wil! :thumbs:
Just a couple of notes on Quenya pronunciation:
1. a short "a" (an "a" without an accent) is not pronounced like the "a" in "father....." (or like the "o" in "dog") -- it's sort of in between "fAther and cAt"....that's why I usually spell it as "ah" in pronunciation.
Secondly, Quenya has a very specific formula for which syllable of a word should be emphasized, and it's a bit complicated.
Essentially, if the second to last syllable is a long vowel, is a dipthong, or is followed by a consonant cluster, the emphasis would fall on that syllable. If the second to last syllable is a short vowel or is followed by just one consonant, then the emphasis would fall on the third to last syllable...(for two-syllable words, the accent almost ALWAYS falls on the first syllable, except with words such as "avį" which have a long vowel as the second syllable).
Ack...I told you it was complicated! :blush: lol
A few of those words would be pronounced as follows (the main differences are on the emphasized syllables:
fendassė [fen-DAH-seh]
paluhta [pal-OO-tah]
hamba [HAHM-bah]
More Quenya fun facts! ;)

Oh yes! May I ask what wordlist you are using to find those words? I can say I've never seen a couple of those! :thumbs:
Thanks!

ummm... i think it would be more helpful to find the sindarian words before you give us the Quenya words... i dunno, im gonna wait anyway cause im interested in learning the two as different languages. but i guess if anyones opinion differs from mine...

maybe we should have 2 different threads about 'sticky-note elvish' one for sindarin, the other for quenya then people can learn whichever they want to

Thank you, Isiltįri! I am still having problems with Quenya! :( I did download the first five lessons of the Quenya course that you took, but I just haven't had the time to look at them yet! For some reason I always thought that the Quenya pronunciation rules were the same as the Sindarin, I guess they're not!
As for the seperate threads. I think it would be easyer to have only one thread for this for two reasons, One, it would be easyer for ME not to have to post in two different threads, and two, it would be easyer for people who DO want to learn both at the same time and not have to switch threads to get both. If you only want to learn one of the languages then only write stickies for that one. Then later you can come back and get the others when you're ready.
OK, here's today's stickies (Isiltįri, if I get the Q pronunciations wrong I always welcome your help!)
bread = Q. masta [MAS-tah], S. bas [bas] (like in "lembas")
house = Q. coa [CO-ah], S. cardh [carthe] ("dh" makes the sound of the "th" in "thee")
book = Q. parma [PAR-mah], S. parf [parv] (a final "f" in Sindarin sounds like a "v")
floor = Q. talan [TALL-an], S. talaf [TALL-ahv] (you forgot about the final "f" didn't you?)
Isiltįri, I found the Q dictionary at Elvish.org, it's got a lot of "new" words in it, that is probibly why you haven't heard of them. The dictionary is called "Parma Penyanė Quettaron". I can't find the exact link right now, sorry! Oh, yeah! If you have any words that would be good for stickies, please post them!

Hey cool, someone else who knows this fun fact! I always find it funny when people don't know who "Gandalv" is. :)

Not exactly....as you know, Galdalf had many names, and by the Elves, he was called Mithrandir (Sindarin) or Olórin (Quenya).
And psssst....Tar-ancalimė! It's SindarIN, not SindarIAN. ;) :)

Ah, I assumed that rule applied to all the names Tolkien made up. Which brings up the question: where *does* the name Gandalf come from?
But I guess we shouldn't make this go too off-topic...

oh! many apologies. thank you for correcting me, isiltari.

lol Actually, Gandalf is not a name that Tolkien made up. It is old Norse, but I don't remember what it means. All the dwarf names are Norse too. (another Tolkien fun fact!) :cool:
Here are today's sticky notes:
lamp = Q. calma [CALL-mah], S. calar [CALL-are]
wall = Q. ramba [RAHM-bah], S. ram [rahm]
bed = Q. caima [KHY (rhymes with "hi")-mah], S. sorry! I don't know of the Sindarin word for "bed"! :(
Only three today. This is getting hard! I'm running out of nouns that people would have in their houses! Any suggestions would be welcome! :p

Sorry I don't have any sticky notes for today! I have been so busy over the weekend that I haven't had time to even THINK about anything Elvish!
I will try to have some up tomorrow. :cool:

OK, today's sticky notes are...
knife = Q. sicil [SEE-kill], S. sigil [SEE-gill]
dog = Q. huo [HOO-oh], S. hū [HOO]
cat = Q. mėoi [MAY-oy] S. sorry, no Sindarin!
I know you probibly can't put a sticky note on your dog or cat, but I thought it would be fun for you to learn them anyway. (Actually, my brother did put a sticky note on our dog and cat. At least until they fell off!) :rolleyes:

OK, I am going to try something diferent this time. Since there are no Elvish words for stuff like refrigerator or CD/Tape player, I will atempt to make one up. :(
This may not work, so bear with me :p
I thought that I could just use "ice box" for refrigerator, but I can't find an elvish word for "box", not even "chest". The only other word combination I could think of was "Food Keeper". I know that could also be a pantry or a cubbard, but that's all I came up with. If you have any better ideas I would love to here them.
So anyway... Refrigerator in Sindarin would then be aescheben [ice-KEB-en] Lit. "Food Keeper"
Here is my atempt at CD/Tape player: linceredir [lin-CARE-eh-deer] Lit. "Song Maker"
If any of you have any more ideas along this line let me know and I will try to translate them. Or of you think this is dumb and you want me to stop, I can do that too! :blush:

Well good, I'm glad you like them! :grin:
Isilitįri, you can do the Quenya versions if you want to (I'm not even going to try!). ;)
I'f any of you have any suggestions for more tell me! :thumbs:

Erm, can you tell me how to count in Elvish? General conversation ideas, like introductions, weather, declarations of affections :) hehe
But i must say sah! Marvellous effort, what! what! Spliffing.

Ok, here is another atempt at a "new" Elvish word. The word is "clock".
Now I know that "time piece" would be a more acurate meaning, but I couldn't find any Elvish word for "piece", so I am stuck with "time keeper" :( (I guess this can also refer to a person who keeps time).
So "Clock/Watch" in Sindarin would be Cheblūnon [keb-LOO-non] Lit. "Time Keeper"
As always, if you have any better ideas for this please tell! :cool:
And Isiltįri, you are welcome to do the Quenya for these! :thumbs:
Oh and LeoWyatt, this thread is just for Sticky Notes (which are only single words), I will answer questions about phrases in the forum entitled "Elvish Phrases for Everyday Life".

Those good ideas? haha.

Hmm... I'll see what I can do. Thanks! :thumbs:

October 2nd,2002, 07:12 PM
OK, here they are!
Calendar I thought could be "Keeper of Days" :( (If you have a better idea please tell)
In Sindarin that would be Cheberaid [keb-AIR-ide] (ide rhymes with "ride")
For phone I have three choices:
"Far Speaker" = Palan-pedon [PAL-an PED-on] (Not my favorite)
"Long Voice" = Anlammen [an-LAM-men] (lam with an "a" as in fAther) I like this better as an Elvish word!
"Speaking Horn" = pedrafn [PED-raf-n] :(
"Far Speaking Horn" = Palan-pedrafn [PAL-en PED-raf-n] :( :(
I couldb't find the words I needed in Sindarin to do "desk". I thought I could say "Writer's Table" or "Scribe's Table", but I can't find the Sindarin word for "table"! verymad Isiltįri could probibly come up with one if the Quenya word for "table" is *paluhta, and the Quenya word for "writer" is *tengwo or *tecindo, or "scribe" = tecilquar. (I know that Isiltįri doesn't like to use unattested words, but maybe she can make an exception just this once? notworthy
For "fork" I thought up Aecanad [eye-CAN-ed] Lit. "Four Points" :p
As for "spoon", I couldn't think up what to call it besides "spoon"! :blush: Ideas are welcome!
