Hello, all.

Has anyone here read Crown Duel or Court Duel, by Sherwood Smith?? They are the most awesome books!!!

The first is about this girl, who - just with her brother - is trying to defeat this tyrannical King. And she manages, too. And then in the next one, Court Duel, she has to go to live with all these aristocrats, and she's a total outdoorsy, chick with no manners... I know I can't make it sound good... But It's the perfect book... it's got romance, and intrigue, and mystery, and war.... It's just so awesome. I'd especially reccomend it to anyone who enjoys reading fairy tales, and fantasy-type books. Post if you've read it, though.

If not... :read: it!!

I'm afraid I doubt I'll ever be able to read a book better than Lord of the Rings

:( I don't think anyone but me has ever read those books. I don't think they're better than LOTR, just different. These books have more girls in them. As much as I love lotr, I think that Tolkien was a male-shovanist pig. I mean, how many girls are in his books?? And I just can't stand Eowyn... He should've written more girls in....

Ouch! That's a bit harsh on Tolkien! I wouldn't go quite that far! Maybe we need to find somewhere to properly get opinions on this? WoW!

I have not had the opportunity to even see these books. Who's the publisher?

IMO, Tolkien was writing what he knew (kind of, in an eleborate, different world way) and back in those days women didn't do much out of the house -they didn't go to war, they stayed at home or got evacuated to the country, kinda like how Eowyn went to Dunharrow and he probably based Eowyn on someone he knew or knew of that wanted to go to war but was left at home...... but anyway, off the topic there, I'm afraid i haven't read the books veryhappy

Like this::stomper: See? It's quite easy, actually. I guess I just have a personality clash with her... I really liked Arwen, but....she wasn't in the books!! Well, not enough to count, anyway.

Okay, perhaps I was a bit harsh in my statement about Tolkien. But I've heard he didn't like females a whole lot. I don't think he was even ever married, but I could be wrong about that....
It just makes the book less-better. I think the book would have been perfect, had there been more females for us girls to relate to! Maybe it's just me, though. I dunno. But I never said I didn't think them awesome, because why else would I be here?!??!

Tolkien was married. Here's a part of his biography:
Father Francis found the boys lodgings at the home of a Mrs Faulkner. Tolkien was then 16. Also lodging in the same house was an attractive girl named Edith, aged 19, and a relationship between them began. This outraged Father Francis who forbade Tolkien to see Edith, until he was 21.
Tolkien applied himself to his studies at King Edwards and in 1911 obtained a scholarship to Oxford University, to study languages.

When he became 21, while at Oxford, he again contacted Edith, and they renewed their relationship and planned to marry. They married three years later.

I don't have quotes about his attitude to women, but you're completely wrong.
He just didn't like writing for women using their power much, which is understandable for his time.
His women are powerful, tho they don't do much with their powers - Galadriel for example.
IMO it wasn't that bad as many books and movies seem to have a strong female character, just because there has to be one. But that's just me.

Awww, that's really sweet!! That excerpt from his biography, I mean. I never knew any of that!!

I wasn't sure about his opinions on women, I was just quoting what someone I knew said. (I suppose that means I should've kept shut, but I never was very good at that. )

I don't have a deeply-rooted hatred for the girl. I just don't thnk she's really all that great, and I can't relate to her. There is no need to defend her so ardently. I was just stating my opinion! I have no plans to murder her, or something! Gee golly Holcom!
