View Full Version : Aragorn's horse in the flim

Ok, they've got pictures of Gandalf and Aragorn's horses from TTT over at the official movie site. Aragorn's horse is supposedly called 'Brego'.
The horse is supposed to be Hasufel. verymad
I know this is the silliest thing to be upset about with all the other major changes that are to be occuring, but does anyone else besides myself find this name-change of his horse unnessessary? Why not simply stick with the name Tolkien gave?
Please feel free to agree or tell me how idiotic this thread is.

That does seem like a pointless change.... it wouldn't have taken much to call the horse 'Hasufeld' instead of 'Brego,'.....
Loca is a good word. Kidding, Ashley.

We'll find out once the flim is in the theater and PJ talks more about it.
Until then..."Hoom!"

hehe, neither one of thoses names are the right one. Hasufel is the name of the horse Eomor gave him and Aragorn returned it to him, probably. Aragorn has his own horse who's name is Roheryn. His friends brought it to him in the book just before he went on the Paths of the Dead. So what do you think about "Brego" now?

Do you know if any horse is called brego in the books?

now this strikes me as odd....after all Asfaloth kept his name and the horse that Legolas rides is referred to as Arod, so why would they change just that name?
seems very strange to me......

No that you mention it Madam Catz, it does seem very strange about Asfaloth and Arod. But why? Why?

maybe theres a mistake! just a simple but stupid error that no-one picked up on. that doesn't seem very likely actually. nevermind.

Well who knows why they changed it maybe to get in some history aobut rohan. Thats what I read anyway. Brego being 2nd king and hall builder etc.............good idea I guess. In a movie you have no luxury of time so I suppose you have to squeeze things in and drop or merge others.

thank you! I knew I had heard the name mentioned somewhere before this started. It was really starting to annoy me. :p

time for Ashley's Theory! This is a composite of bits from TORN and my own brain (a little scheming)....
Ok! Here's what I've gleened and schemed:
From what TORN has found, it would seem that Aragorn might be knocked sensless at some battle in the film. (In an article yesterday).
Today, they found out that Brego might be aquired by Aragorn like this..."Alert Ringer Brandon sent this in after inspecting the latest TTT figures (which he says are available now at Target stores near Salt Lake City, Utah): The caption on the back of the "Aragorn and Brego" two pack set gives detail into the horse, though it doesn't quite tell everything. It reads, "A descendant of the ancient kings, Aragorn was fated to one day reclaim the lost throne of Gondor, but for the moment he found himself but one more sword amid the defense of Rohan as they prepared for war. In this time of great peril, Aragorn found a kinship with Brego, the wild horse of Rohan's late Prince Theodred, who had been cut down by orcs at the Fords of Isen. Brego was traumatized by the loss of his lord, but Aragorn's gentle hand stayed the beast's fear, and in time he came to bear the king in exile as faithfully as he had once borne the Prince of Rohan"
Interesting, no? It would seem, as TORN has conjectured in that other article yesterday, that Hasufel gets killed and Aragorns needs another horse---hence Brego! Which means that Aragorn goes to the battle at the Fords of Isen---left senseless.
This seems to be supported by that photo of Aragorn battling an Orc on a Warg. That river in the back must be Fords. And also, from TolkienOnline's lovely collection of theories and spoilers, at battle at the Fords of Isen happens in real-time!
Well, there we have it. Brego explained. Poor Hasufel!
*sigh*

Guys, I've thought of something...
Ok, the horsey's name doesn't really mean a lot to me, but I think the original is a lot cooler...
But can it be that PJ wants a more "easy to remember" name for the common movie-goer since there already are tons of confusing names for the people who haven't read the book?
Just guessing :naughty:

mecry no! I don't want Hasufel ot die. Why do they have to kill an innocent horse? Why, why? Why not have Eowyn ride her cousin's horse when she goes to Gondor or something? This is just silly. There are other ways to advance the plot without killing Hasufel.

Heres my theory, i agree with gowpon....Just another difficult name. Imagine the conversations in the cinema toilets,
"E's fell off? What sort of name is that for a horse?" hehe ;)

What's in a name? A horse by any other name would smell as sweet. King Brego's son Baldor was the one that boasted he would tread the "Paths of the Dead" and was never heard from again. Me thinks that is why they chose this name for him as a reference to events that will occur in ROTK.
I like the name Brego. I think it bestows a certain humility to him that reflects Aragorn's own character. Good horse.
