There have been a lot of talk about the characters and creatures involved in the silmarillion, but not much discussion about the landscape, the places, the nature, what the place actually looks like. Tolkien spent a hell of a lot of time describing such intricate details of the scenery of middle earth. Our imagination does a lot to fill in the gaps, but what about the artists that draw middle earth. I guess what my question would be is, if you had the choice where would you live in middle earth?why?

also which artists out of the plethora of tolkien artists is your favourite middle earth visionary and why?

I'd like to live in Lothlorien.

I haven't seen too many of the famous artists, but I have seen Alan Lee's. He's really good!! His drawings are beautiful and you can see he really cares. Score one for PJ for hiring him and the other guy!

Oh, but my all time favorite visionary of Middle-Earth is my own self. I like how I see it. Nothing like being original.

I would like to live in Númenor... its early days, of course. I mean, a land just for men created by the gods?
(Of course I would have to miss all the hot elves...)

And I like Alan Lee. His paintings are beautiful, they're a lot how I envision ME.
Most of all though I agree with Ashley. I like my images the best! :)

my favourite middle earth artist has to be ted nasmith, i fell in love with his depiction of valinor and the shores of aman, they are nothing like what i had imagined myself, they actually look like it exists. although alan lee has some good drawings i find his scenery too wishy washy, too much is left to the imagination especially as it is visual art.
John Howe was the other guy that helped in Lord of the rings, his character and creature and armoury art is spot on.

i agree the visions in our minds and heart are the most vivid and best, but inside its not really real. when you see the art, it actually feels like it actually existed and these artists have been there. do you know what i mean?

I do see what you mean. It's becomes more real when you see other people's visions, though I do think that takes away from being original.

I dont think anything gets taken away, the reason being what is inside you is embedded and no one can change it, although your ideas are likely to be influenced by others.

The entire middle earth saga is like a pre history, when the earth was young and so were its inhabitants.
We are like an after though a people diminished in valour and strength. Even though the world we know is beautiful the world tolkien created was even more beautiful and powerful.

I respect the artists that try and capture the beauty and timelessness of MIddle Earth.

I'd love to live in Valinor, become an immortal.... (Do you know that it's most probably possible in the future... it's cool science stuff) and anyways... I've always invisioned Valinor as a peaceful place, blissful... I guess I want a peace of mind and heart... it's sorta adamant there...

I think I would like to live in Khazad-dûm, it's an intriguing place in Tolkien's works.

I withhold my opinion of ME artists until I've seen more of their works. But I do like my own visions of Eä. ;)

i dont think that the images of others can take away from your own......rather enrich yours with new contexts and textures.
As far as Alan Lees scenery goes, it looks undetailed because he works in Water colour, which is by nature pale and soft, but he DOES have a great deal of detail in it if you study them....that said i DO prefer the landscape treatments of Howe.
Dont mind Nasmith, but im not keen on his colour treatments...almost garish
anyone who wants to discuss the artists and their work, nip on over the the Art forum and start talking lol
