View Full Version : Fellowship of the Ring - Effects that made you cringe

OK, we've discussed lines and scenes that made people cringe... now what about special effects that were so badly executed that they made people cringe? I thought the effects were very good, but there were still a few stinkers. For example:
Personally, I had a problem with one shot in the stairway scene in Moria. When Frodo and Aragorn are on the swaying section of the stair and they lean forward, right before they crash into the section the rest of the fellowship is standing on there's one shot where the compositing is simply horrible! It doesn't look believable at all... quite a shame really since the stairway is otherwise such a well-done sequence.
And of course, it will come as no surprise to those that know me that I absolutely hated the scene where Galadriel goes all evil.. couldn't they have come up with something a little more subtle!? Course, I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but whatever...
Anyone else?

I think the effects of the fellowship running across the bridge before gandalf squares up to the balrog is pretty naff. They all look like they are professional runners...arms pumping and all that! lol

the only effect i think was REALLY bad was the galadriel one but i've already explained all that in the other thread.

You know, every time I see that part I'm like, God, I could never RUN across that thing, I'd be on my hands and knees trying not to look down and/or at that big firey thing right behind me!

to be honest the one effect that really bugs me is that model shot of the Argonath.....the model and the CGI of the statue are different...if you look at the foot, in one instance its wll above the water, and im the other right on the waterline......its such a clumsy mistake in an otherwise wonderful shot.....it bugs the hell out of me....

When Frodo pulled his hand away from the witchking on weathertop, the witchking straighened up and the way he pulled back his hand to stab frodo looked very herky-jerky, not smoth at all.

Me too!!!! I'd have to get someone to carry me across so i could close my eyes. lol i cant stand heights.
Most of moria i thought was great, but there's one shot when they are running thru the halls where it's so obviosly CGI that i have to close my eyes so that the overall effect isnt spoilt. And Galadriel as i've sed many a time really annoyed me.

I totally agree with you on that one...each time I watch the movie that part just gets on my nerves...it is so obvious that it is computer-maded...I also feel like it is a computer game...
And I don't know what do you think about this one...sometimes when the fellowship were running in Moria, especially after the killing of the Troll, I also felt that it was a little too "computerized"...:( lol

not only that but the way they pump their arms and stuff
I actually don't have a problem with Galadriel going all psycho I found it pretty entertaining
I'm ok with when the witch king pulls his hand back it's like he was all "what the ****! FINE" *stab* thought it was ok
The moria scene did have a little computerized effect but I liked it anyways

I actually had a problem with the balrog.
I think he was scarier in the book, or something. Because in the book, he freaked me out, but he wasn't very scary in the movie. At least in my opinion. Come on, the orcs were worse than him. I guess I hadn't pictured him looking like that, or something...
I also didn't like the way Gandalf fell off the bridge, afterwards. It was like he said his line, and just let go. I think they needed a do-over for that scene, to make it look like he actually fell , and didn't just let go. Dunno, that's just my opinion...
Aubrey
And yeah, Galadriel was pretty weird in that scene. It made me like her alot less.:mmmm: Well, what to do....

I really hate the bit on the stairs in moria. it ruins the whole scene and its sooooo fake lukin when aragorn and frodo lean forward and wobble a bit!
i also agree wiv Aubrey, that bit wiv Galadriel put me off the character.it was too much

Hello everyone! I'm a newby to this forum. I'm so glad I found it.
To reply on this thread, overall the special effects were good. I must agree that the Galadriel transformation was not as believable as it should have been. And I agree more that Gandalf's fall should have been more like it was in the book.
I think I've seen the movie about 20 times already and I still enjoy seeing them run over the Bridge of Khazad Dum, expecially seeing Pippin (at least, I think it's supposed to be him) pumping his arms and looking over the side. AAGGHH!
The special effect I have a problem with, as many here have, is when Legolas jumps onto the trolls back, shoots the arrow, and jumps off. It did remind me of Harry Potter, although in LOTR it did not look quite as rubbery as it did in HP. With the technology that they have, they could have done it better.
Sorry for the long post! Thanks for having me.
But,

Welcome..come to think of it the cave troll does look a bit like the troll in HP.

You're kidding me... watch those movies again... those trolls look nothing alike... wow I can't believe you people actually thought that, wow, I'm reeling in shock, I mean, IMO, the cave troll in HP was so unbelievably unrealistic, weak, and small, and do you really think that those three in HP could have taken on our cave troll? Not in a million years, I betcha. And I had no problems with the Legolas thing... he looked so wonderful... what can I say, he's an elf. Plus, I hated the troll in HP.

i loved the HP books but wasnt overly impressed by the film. Mainly coz i just didnt like the boy who played Harry.
Newayz....i thought the cave troll in FOTR was better that HP. Also i did think Legolas jumping off the cavetroll was very CGI but i still love that fight scene.
Little Devil
October 6th,2002, 05:08 PM
What is CG?
Catz
October 6th,2002, 06:12 PM
CG= Computer Generated
CGI= Computer Generated Image(ary)
and i think the LOTR movies are on record with the most CGI of any movies except for Final Fantasy, which of course was CG entirely
:catz:

i didn't see final fantasy but i wanted to purely for that reason....it looked really cool....not realistic at all...but cool nonetheless
