Which do you think to be the best children's book. In a recent poll Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone came top. I disagree, ok so I haven't read Harry Potter, but I dont see how it can compare to Tolkien.

You definately should read them.

well.. erm I haven't read Harry Potter and don't ever plan to. I've vowed not to read them....
Tar-Ancalimë.. you think Harry Potter is 10 tmes better? suit yourself! of course I don't have a say since I've never read HP
Lynx
September 25th,2002, 01:50 AM
I've read Harry Potter but I can name at least 5 to 10 books better than HP (LOTR Included). :)
But HP is okay, not bad at all, books are better than the movie I've got to say though. They're not my favorite books but they are good.
Nothing beats LOTR, The Count of Monte Cristo or The Three Musketeers. Best books ever, in my opinion, of course. ;)

haha. I never said they weren't good books. I just said they weren't the best. :)
I agree tha witchcraft isn't the point but the books do go a tad bit too far, imo, like they could do with out the ghosts. I don't personally like the ghosts. Thats the only thing that really bugs me.
A! Elbereth
September 25th,2002, 02:43 AM
I never said anything about witchcraft.. Even if I did want to read them I would never be able to buy it or rent it without my mom seeing it frist

September 25th,2002, 02:52 AM
haha. I know what you mean. I know you didn't say anything about witchcraft either. See my mom doesn't have a prob with HP or LOTR. My grandparents have a prob with both so when they visit all my LOTR stuff gets hidden.

Harry Potter is good, if a little unbelievable but its a good read to while away a few hours. i think the hobbits better than HP, but His Dark material Trilogy by Philip Pullman is better than The Hobbit, although thats not as good as LOTR trilogy.
But all the books are good in their own way:thumbs:

Both my 9-year-old son and I have read ALL of the HP books...I think he and I agree that Prisoner of Azkaban is our favorite thus far, but we're both awaiting the next book....can't wait to see what happens.....I love Tolkien as well, of course, but my son had a bit of difficulty getting into the Hobbit (of course, after seeing the movie, he really wanted to read the trilogy....he's very concerned about what happens to Gandalf!) and I think he should probably wait a few months and see......I must honestly confess that I can't say which one is "better"....it's like comparing apples and oranges....both fine fruits, but constructed very differently....I have a personal affinity for the HP books in that magick is more than just a pastime of mine, but for complete escape, nothing beats ME....just depends on the mood.....

ok what i meant was i belive that ME could really have existed - the book makes it so believable whereas i don't really think that a wizard school could exist - the writing doesn't make you think that you are really there, IMO, (does that make sense?)
Tar-Ancalimë
September 30th,2002, 02:28 AM
yup. I believe in ME 100%. I don't believe in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But you know what? That doesn't diminish my pleasure of the books by one whit. Not even the tiniest bit. I still love 'em and read 'em like every day. They are simply the best (OK second best) books I have ever read. The writing?? Doesn't make you believe you're there?? Like I said,

Hobbit vs. Potter, eh? hehe ...
Well ... I've read both and I think they are each great stories. Some kids will like Potter ... others will be drawn to our dear Bilbo. That's just the way of it ...
I read the Hobbit when I was like 9 years old and I read Potter at 30 years of age (hehe) to my kids. But, neither are my favorite children's stories. That honor belongs to C.S. Lewis as far as I'm concerned. The Chronicles of Narnia are the best! If you read this as a kid then you must admit looking for magic wardrobes! I will not believe otherwise! lol

We have a Land of Far 'oom in our new house!!! I'm just beginning to read the chronicles again - i only read the first few when i was younger and then lost interest, kinda like with the Hobbit, (i used to prefer to read books like the babysitters club and sweet valley high - what can i say - i was a right girlie girl and fantasy books never used to be my thing!) so i'm making up for a lost childhood enjoyment, and then i'll start on the Borrowers (i closed that book after the first chapter because there's a ghost in it). Anyway. back on subject, the chronicles are really good childrens books, and i also used to love the series that the bbc did of them.
Tar, back to Harry Potter - i enjoyed the books, and i also liked the film, but for me to really, really enjoy a book its got to draw me in completly and for that hour, or day, or whatever that i'm reading, its got to be able to let me lose myself in the book. My parents know that if i'm reading a book that can do that, theres no point talking to me at all, coz i don't hear them. Harry Potter, however good i thought it was, and i did think it was really good, but it didn't let me lose myself and get away from everythnig else so IMO, it isn't the greatest book out thereveryhappy

I've read the books but I think the hobbit is better. harry potter is great but I think I'm rooting for the wrng side? I seem to want harry dead and I like malfoy...... agh... what is wrong with me. although being a death eater sounds fun..... well kind of....
I have role-played a death eater. that was fun! i have so many arguements for being evil..... I literally had a reply for anything they said! :)
I find harry annoying but I think rons worse.... plus I keep doing sorting hat quizzes......they always put me in slytherin! go figure. I can't think why? I'm a goody two shoes in life... probably more hermione with the 'but thats breaking the rules'

Maedhros is correct.
I was willingly to let this discussion run unhindered as long as it remained relevant to the Hobbit. If you guys can get it back in line ... continue ... if not ... this discussion needs to be continued in Other Movies probably.
Thanks!

no no we arent talking about the movie, move this to other books, Algy, if you would be so kind
Algamesh
October 8th,2002, 03:41 AM
Well ... I don't want to move the entire discussion because some of it actually fits the Hobbit / Potter comparison which is valid here. I'm just saying that any additional Potter-only material needs to be properly placed ... Other Books then ;)
Sound Good?
That's my last rant ... I'm off topic here ... hahaha!

can you split the thread, and put the HP discussion in other books under a new thread in other books????
Yes Tar-Ancalime! Great Idea! I have moved the most of the exclusive HP movie talk to "Other Movies". You guys can continue your Snape discussions there if you'd like :p !
This thread is still hungry for some HP vs. Hobbit comparisons though!

ooh! good discussion. I like the way Arien put it. both are very fine. and for awhile, I didn't have a favorite. they both tied.
I think now that lotr is the ultimate favorite, but just by a little.
I think HP is more easily understandable to children, other than the Hobbit. Given, it is a fine book indeed. many people have told me they didn't like the Hobbit when they read it as a child, but now they do. So, its a little too much for children, who aren't as good readers, or it just doesn't click yet. everyone has their own learning style. :)
but..i would like to find the HP discussion and talk more on it.
so as not to upset algy :P and of course, so I don't get off track, which i'm about to. lol
Lessa
October 28th,2002, 09:01 AM
I think it was meant as a book to be read to children by an adult. Whereas HP can be easily read by the child themselves. I find that Hp is a very easy read about 2/3 hours but The Hobbit takes a little longer because there is more detail. I don't have a favourite of either of these books I prefer more meat to my stories.

Ok ok!!! I know this is late in coming, but I must say it to ease the bikkering or however you spell it. First off Lynx I hate to break it to you but they're some ghost in the LOTR. Tar-Ancalime I agree with you HP is a better Childrens book. The Hobbit and LOTR series is for a older group. The witchcraft has nothing to do with any of this since it belongs in both books. I hope I have eased some minds if not I tried.
Ok maybe I don't agree with you Tar-Ancalime. HP is a childrens book for the ages of 10 and up while LOTR is more 13 and up. If you don't go with me oh well
Oh more to my sermon(LOL). HP books are easier to read then LOTR. The LOTR has harder words to pronounce

Err. I don't really think Harry Potter should be better though I read all of the books. I mean, even in the movie, Harry potter sucks.. No offence once again, but err, I don't like those little kids twittering away in the movie with this funny accent that they own. (I don't mean English Accent)
Anyway. I really really infinity times think that Lord of the Rings is much better than Harry Potter both in the movie and in the book, because, well the story is much more better organized for me.
I mean, look at it, There are like many things that J.K. Rowling (HArry Potter's author, if you don't know... lol) had copied from the book; from the figure of Gollum/House elves and Nazguls/the Dementors... etc.:naughty:

I have read Harry Potter and it doesn't even come close to be compared to the caliber of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I'm sorry, but I just don't like the fact that there are many similarities in the books. I just think that J.K. Rowling is a copier off of Tolkien. I understand that many writers do you use other writings for inspiration, but please...if you are going to use it don't copy some of the major characters. If you want a creative best seller make your own story and your own characters. So as I was saying, The Hobbit is far better than any Harry Potter book!

March 17th,2003, 06:26 PM
when you think about it harry potter is a childrens book and the lord of the rings is more of a grown up book
not one you read when your 7 like harry potter.
The harry potter film was very poor so i dont know how you compare the two you must be really sad as lord of the rings kicks *** and you cant say harry pothead is better as it is really boring ands **** so its kind of in insult to lord of the rings to compare them

Harry Potter is definitly the best children's book. I think that the Hobbit has a larger meaning than Harry Potter and therefore is not truly a childrens book

Well it seems i am a little late in noticeing this threadlol but i will state my opinion.
I have read all 4 harry potter books and i think they are very good. But the movies so far are crapyy.
In comparason to The Hobbit as a childrens book i would say that Harry Potter is the better, but The Hobbit is still my favourite book over all others.
I think Harry Potter realy does appeal to the younger audiences more so then The Hobbit mainly i think is because they can understand it better and realy get into the book. Were as the Hobbit is a little more on the Advanced side in books, but still a great book to read:thumbs:
I am going to go LordOfTheRings though, I realy do like Harry Potter and i think the only reason i didn't pick it is becuase i have been so affected by Lotr over the last few years it is hard for me to think about much else i realy love it:).

i don't thiunk the harry potter films were that bad.....i prefer LOTR but they weren't as bad as most people say....i prefer the 2nd one to the first...can't wait for the next film (both HP and LOTR!!)
I think that at this moment in time HP probably has a wider child audience than the hobbit cos its kinda in fashion...some kids have never heard of the hobbit or Tolkien...they need educating! lol
