in the movie, when gandalf went to visit saruman there was this scene where the two of them are being shown walking in this garden and Orthanc is behind them. i was very pleased when i saw that. Orthanc looked exactly like in a paintitng of allan lee showing it after it was flooded.
if you haven't noticed that take a look ....

Yes I saw that, many of the images in the film are identical to his paintings, check out the Helm's Deep scenes etc. He was the main artist who worked on the movie though, even down to positioning fish bones in scenes with Gollum, apparantly!

AH yeah I read it on the official site. Find the helms deep painting by him in the gallery and then look at the trailer. The assault on the wall is almost identical. :-)

yeah.....*grins* that fishbones thing is just an example of how detailed they were on these movies....
not just Lee either....i have a Howe watercolour of Gandalf that you would swear was of Ian Mckellen.....
and Lees Rivendell, which while not identical, is very similar to the movie set...or his Stone Trolls, which are almost identical
which makes me very interested in how theyre gonna do the dark steeds....the mounts of the winged Nazgul....cos i have a really great Howe painting of them.....if they look anything like....theyll be amazing.....

I like Alan Lee, but a lot of his paintings don't have a lot of color. My favorite LOTR artist would probably be Ted Nasmith.

I actually like Lees almost monochromatic style....i find its very evocative...has a misty, far away feel to it thats very in keeping...but thats very much a matter of personal taste.
