Whats your favorite part in LOTR? Post them here.

My personal favorite is everything that happens in Bree. There is something about those few chapters that really draw me towards them. It is a MAJOR turning point in the book, since they meet Aragorn and let him come along with them to Rivendell. And most importantly, Barliman is the best.

Yes I like that bit too, though in some ways it is a sad part of the book. Since the hobbits really start to lose their innocence and have contend with the big bad world.

Aragorn in Bree (ray of light in hobbit's misery and what a ray ;) )
Faramir and Eowyn (a lovescene I like, I sometimes surprise myself)
Gildor - such wisdom and insight in the world he is about to leave
Merry and Pippin with Theoden and Denethor - so good to see the hobbits in this light
I see myself wacking up in the middle of the night slapping myself for not mentioning something so - and many more

My favorite part is Moria. It's just so cool how they're reading and it's saying "They are coming, we cannot get out" then they all of the sudden hear the pounding. It's a nice creepy part.

I have at least 3 different parts... all involving FRODO! But my most favorite would have to be.... in Rivendell and the Council of Elrond becuase Frodo recovers and shows great courage 'voluteering' to take the ring to the crack of Mount Doom, and to his peril.

i loved moria....just so sad the thought of that lost city...you really get an impression of how treasured a place Khazad Dum was to the dwarves, in the book...how they would risk so much to wrest it back from the Orcs...and i loved the bit where Galadriel is talking to Gimli about how beautiful it was.....so bittersweet....
and in the book i loved Galadriels mirror....just a peek at the most powerful woman in ME...neat ;)
and my other favourite would have to be the battle a Helms Deep....heheh....cannot wait to see that on the big screen.....

I also like the seige of Gondor and the part of book around then. It really shows how desperate the situation was becoming for the forces of good. Denethor was mad, Faramir was almost dead, the city was surrounded. And then it finally turns around when Merry and Eoywn kill the Witch-King.

Well....I don't see how Morhphine has anything to do with these books but:rolleyes:
For me one of my fave parts is during Galadriel's gift giving....
I thought it was so so kewl that when she had nothing for Gimli and asked him what he would want, he displayed true humility (which is a rare charachter trait for a dwarf) and requested a single strand of her hair. Talk about class!!

Rotk is my favorate book, but now that I've read all three, I most enjoy the first few chapters of Fotr. Its a bit more care-free than the rest, and I like seeing the hobbits (especially Frodo) before they change so much.

1. The Choices of Samwise (Without a doubt).
2. The Herbs & Stewed Rabbits thru the Window on the West.
3. All the Sam - Gollum interactions.
4. Then of course the Cracks of Doom chapter.
5. Everything else in the books. Gandalfs re-appearance was a big thrill and surprise in the first reading. As was Eowyn and Merry killing the head Nazgul.

If I had to pick just one chapter it would have to be "Mount Doom". When it all comes down to is two little hobbits: one frial hobbit enduring an incredible amount of physical and mental torture to try and do what is right; and the other the whose capacity for love was so great that he was willing to lay down his life for his friend. That chapter inspires me on so many levels. On a spiritual level because thier sacrifice reminds me of the One whom I believe made the ultimate sacrifice. It inspires me on a human level because getting through the day sometimes is a real challange in the area of personal integrity.
I think of Sam and his no compromise attitude. He loved Frodo. Period. I get a lump in my throat when I read about the part where Sam, seeing Frodo's pitiful physical state lies down next to him to try and comfort him with his arms and body. My eyes too have welled with tears when I read about how Sam wanted to but could not even cry at the sight of his dear master pitifully crawling forward on his hands.
Mount Doom to me, is simply an awesome chapter and the very heart of what LOTR is all about.

Yes yes yes, at the sign of the Prancing Pony is a wonderful chapter. :) For me, everything that comes before it is a simple prologue, but this doesn't mean I like all that comes before it. The chapters I like the most are "The Ring goes South", "A Journey in the Dark" and "The Birdge of Khazad-dűm".
That sequence of chapters is amazingly exciting and enjoyable. I catch myself reading them everynow and then and I've read them at least twice the times I've read the entire trilogy. roflmao

I had a lump in my throat reading that. Well said Dernhelm! Now that you've said that, Mt. Doom is also a favorite of mine. Its so sad, that Sam had to see the one person he cared about so much, be so close, yet so far. Knowing there was nothing to do for him to ease the pain of the ring. For if he did, Frodo would surely go mad, and could hurt himself in the process. I think I will take a break soon and read Mount Doom all over again.
I had better get the tissues ready!

A! Elbereth, I love my complete unabridged auido book of LOTR. Last night I put on disc nine which is Mount Doom and listened to it as I fell asleep. I never in my life purchased an audio book and I just love it. It is an entirley new experience to listen to the book read out loud by an accomplished Shakspearean actor.
Orc
August 14th,2002, 03:35 AM
Thats a tough one, but I'd have to say that anything dealing with the Orcs is high on my list, especially when we as a reader listen in on thier conversations. It really leads you to believe that there is so much more to them than meets the eye or is commonly believed.
After that, most definately has to be the battles, especially Helm's Deep, though as far as a written description of a battle, I've always thought the Fight at Isen Ford (From UT) was much more thorough.

I like the Council of Rivendell and also the Three Hunters search for Merry and Pippin. I just love the idea that these three powerful beings were trying so hard to find two hobbits that appearantly didn't matter in the great scheme of things (of course WE know that Merry and Pippin DID matter, but Aragorn doesn't know that). I also like "The Field of Cormallen" when everyone gets reunited.

Cormallen is sweet...but i found the thing tiring...i knew there was another actiony bit coming cos somebody told me about it...and i just wanted the mush to stop and bring on the heroic hobbits in the shire! :read: lol

Denethor's thing when he kills himself was exciting to me because I never knew about it. Eowyn's role when she kills the Witch-king, Helm's Deep, The love moment between Eowyn and Faramir, when Frodo and Sam meet Faramir, Aragorn healing Faramir, Eowyn and Merry, when Eowyn asked Aragorn if she could go with him, and again when she begged him were all good parts.

i really liked reading the first book because it started the book off and you really didn't know what was going to happen. I like the mines of Moria and when the fellowship meets. I also liked the battle at Gondor because it was exciting and very interesting. The scroning of the Shire was good too because it showed even a small place that is so far away and be effected in times of evil. i mean all the books were really good.

Aragorn in Bree
Boromir's death
In Theoden's palace
Faramir meets the hobbits - these for the human character(s)
Hobbits leaving the Shire - for how Merry's (and others) cope with it (very good for the circumstances and experience)
Barrow-downs - Frodo making his first real choice
Bombadil - I have my strange reasoning and it's neither place nor time for it
These are events not chapters for two reasons - first (as usual) is that I'm lazy, second is that I don't think you have to like the whole chapter.

It is a rare finding to like a WHOLE chapter...but i have to say...i think i can truthfully say that that is the case with me and "The Battle of The Fields of Pelennor" and possibly "The Palantir"...but that's more debateable. :read:

I agree about Mount Doom. The comparison between Frodo and Sam from the beginning of the book and now at this point is just heart-breaking. The pride and willingness to defend what is dear and meaningful to them shines brighter than the deepest, darkest hole in the heart of Mordor.

For me I most enjoyed reading 'The voice of Saruman,' A kinfe in the dark,' Shelob's Lair and 'A journey in the dark.'
I also incredibly enjoyed Tolkein's description of Lothlorien, Rivendell and the Ring wraiths.
I enjoyed the book as a whole. It ran together like perfect sewing, seamless and faultless.
Sometimes I just read individual chapters just for fun because they enchant me so much.

my favourite section of the book comes from Appendix B: Then Legolas built a grey ship in Ithilien, and sailed down Anduin and so over Sea; and with him, it is said, went Gimli the Dwarf. And when that ship passed an end was come in Middle-earth of the Fellowship of the Ring.
The above passage, although very sad and solemn, is a very fitting conclusion to the whole saga.

Of many sequences...Frodo upon the seat of seeing on Amon-Hen "But everywhere he looked..." This is so powerful..

I love the whole sequence in Shelob's Lair. I didn't even think Gollum had ditched them and formulated his sinister plan until it was revealed at the end of the ordeal. Maybe I had missed some things with Gollum in between Amon Hennun and Her Lair(like they show in the movie), but I was totally surprised by the 2nd destruction of Smeagol.
This is all without the fact that the intensity of the situation required my full attention. When Frodo realizes that he can use Galadriel's Phial to light up the tunnel and then he summons the courage to march at her, it is riveting. This is definately not the Frodo of "A Long-expected Party". The best is when Shelob sees Frodo coming and backs down, like She feels his courage and is intimidated by it(even though she eventually gets him back).
I don't know. . .that scene was just so intense and showed that, despite all that he has gone through and how much the Ring has affected him, the Ringbearer was still strong and it gave me confidence that he would be able to complete his quest.

My favorite chapter is Mount Doom. I just think it is a perfect balance of raw emotion and action. I can read it over and over and still get choked up. I also really love how Tolkien repeats the line, "I'm glad you are here with me. Here at the end of all things, Sam." in the follwoing chapter, The Field of Cormallen. It flows so well and keeps the tension.

One of my fav chapters would have to be The Siege of Gondor. It seems so hopeless, like the world of men is finally ended. There is no strength to survive against such odds. But it ends on a hopeful note. Great horns of the north wildly blowing!! I can understand Pippin's feelings about horns.

My favourites I suppose were Moria (with particular reference to Mr.Balrog) and The Siege of Gondor. These were the best bits of an altogether amazing book. Although to pick favourite parts of this book to me seems like winning the contents of Fort Knox and then picking your favourite gold bar!

so true so true...
i really like the whole series...
but my favorite parts... from among my favorite parts are either the parts with long explanations of events, (like Rivendell or when Gandalf explains the origin of the ring) or like adventure parts like Shelob's Lair, Moria, Scouring of the Shire...
and the sad part of the books is also one of my favorites... Grey Havens just gave the whole trilogy a wonderful ending... sad but kind of expected that something drastic might happen to Frodo...
ahhh..i can go on an on about my favorite parts...(for i haven't mentioned parts about the hobbits' cameraderie with each other or Gollum's parts in it or Mount Doom or when the Mouth of Sauron comes... or ... or... ah...) lemme just say that i so agree with Lady Melody :)
