Throughout all of Tolkiens works, there have been dozens and dozens of battles. Which is your favorite?
PrinceImrahil
June 23rd,2002, 03:48 PM
I don't know if I actually have a single favorite battle. I would say the Silmarillion is my favorite battle/series of battles. That is for the most part what the entire story is. Everything that happens revolves around the war with Morgoth.

I think mine has to be the Pelennor fields. Mostly because I like Theoden a lot and it is there that he rides to great renown. :-)

Fatty - I love you! :loveyou: We think the same mate! I LOVE the battle of the fields of pelennor...but everyone knows that already!

lol
My favorite battle would have to be Helms Deep and pelanor feilds. I like helms deep because it is an exiting battle, and pelanor ferilds for the same reason.
I also like the battles in the sil because of all the great tactics used.

I'd say Pellanor Fields and Helm's Deep.

I like Helm's Deep in LotR
Also what comes to my mind is Battle of the fords of Isen, the one in which Theodred dies.
Anyone for the Battle of the Five Armies?
Gil-Galad

Nahh, but6 i like your other choices. The battle of 5 armies was good thyought, but not favorite good.

I don't actually like it, I was just wondering what's the opinion of the others on it.

June 27th,2002, 02:59 AM
My favorite is probably the Battle for the Fords of Isen from UT, mostly because it is one of the most detailed that Tolkien wrote. From the LotR proper, it's a toss up between Pelenor Fields and Helm's deep

I LOOOOVE the Battle on the Fields of Pelennor, cos so much happens and i could really imagine myself in it. :loveyou:
Second is Helm's Deep, but it was a tad dark for me! Good detail though! :elf:
Third is the Battle of the Five Armies - Mirkgirl! I like it! entdraught
I think it was a really good perspective to have it described from the point of view of an innocent(ish) person who wasn't quite sure what the bigger picture was. That was a really good angle for the whole of the Hobbit! :)

There was way too much philosophy in Battle of Five Armies and way too little action IMO.

My favorite is The Battle of the Pellenor Fields. There is so much going on, such strategy! Here we have men of Gondor, Prince Imrahil & the knights of Dol Amroth, King Theoden & the Rohirrim, Aragorn & his entourage, which includes Rangers of the North, Legolas, Gimli, the sons of Elrond.....WHEW! I'm out of breath reciting them all! And let's not forget the featured performers; Merry & Eowyn!
On a literary level, too, this is one of the most exciting chapters in the story. When the horns begin to blow, signalling the arrival of Rohan, I always get teary.....:king:

Dwarf and Orc War, you have to love wars of vengence. Nobody rejoicing, just doing a grim job and killing all those that have wronged you and yours

I would have to go with Helm's Deep. I mean, the Pelennor Fields was an epic all-out assault with many different skirmishes and various victories and defeats. Helm's Deep had that "heroic" element ... the Forces of Good were vastly outnumbered and beaten back. Cornered with no hope in sight! But, being the stuff of legends ... Fate wove the web of victory though all of Isengard's vast strength was present. I particuarly like the quote from Theoden when they are relentlessly driven back:
"The end will not be long," said the king. "But I will not end here, taken like an old badger in a trap. Snowmane and Hasufel and the horses of my guard are in the inner court. When dawn comes, I will bid men sound the Helm's horn, and I will ride forth. Will you ride with me then, son of Arathorn? Maybe we shall cleave a road or make such an end as will be worth a song - if any be left to sing of us hereafter."

Maedhros
August 31st,2002, 02:45 AM
I will have to disagree with you all. My favorite battle in the world of Tolkien is the Fifth Battle that ended up with the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
I remember that Maedhros (fav. character) was prepared to bring the War back to Morgoth. Their plan was that Maedhros would show himself in full force in the east, bringing out all of the armies of Morgoth so that his friend and High King of the Noldor would come from the west and as with a hammer and anvil grind Morgoth's armies to dust.
I remember when Turgon suddenly saw that his brother Turgon had come to war
But now a cry went up, passing up the wind from the south from vale to vale, and Elves and Men lifted their voices in wonder and joy. For unsummoned and unlocked for Turgon had opened the leaguer of Gondolin, and was come with an army ten thousand strong, with bright mail and long swords and spears like a forest. Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The night is passing!'
And just for a moment I thought, can it be, will the Noldor be able to defeat Morgoth in battle.
Unfortunately, it ended up in disaster thanks to the treachery of Ulfang and my friend Fingon died, but it was a glorious battle indeed, because the Noldor tried to defeat Morgoth.

Battle of Bywater! that was the last battle of the War of the Rings... that one is my favorite...

Id say itd be, the Nirneath, just the way the men of Dor-Lomin held the rear gaurd while Glorfindel and Ethecelion gaurded the flanks of the Kings retreat, and on the eastern front the Dwarves of Belegost(i think) fighting the fire drakes, and there Lord geting crushed by Glaurung, b4 the dragon feld and then the dwarves simply lifted up ther lord and walked of the feild lamenting and nobody dared go near them. the War of Wrath was very good to the way Morgoth released the Dragons and the assault of theWest was stayed and then Earendil came with the Eagles and he threw down whatshisname the black and crushed the peaks of thangordrim. i liked the battle of the five armies,i liked thorin comin out of the mountain and getin peirced with arrows but still fightin on and almost coming to the gaurd of the head orc guy, and the fili and kili(i think) rushin to defend his body but getin slain themselves. the bear man (im very bad with names) was cool the way he he ripped through the gaurd of the leader of the Orcs and broke him and then carried the body of Thorin to safety

IT would have to be the War of the Ring. Yup that was my favorite war witha ll those battles in it!
2nd would be Nirnaeth Arnoediad because it was the most disastrous of the Wars of Beleriand. So many people lost... mecry mecry Then there was the traitorous evil easterlings :verymad: :verymad: ! I was :) that the dwarves were not falling to glaurung! So many emotions

I agree with you on Nirnaeth Arnoediad: it's such a cool part of the story (well: not for the elves of course but for the story)
The last alliance is cool aswell: the biggest battles after the War of Wrath and cool commanders.

From LotR, I liked best the Pelennor Fields. Eowyn slaying the witchking.
From Sil, the Fifth Battle is probably my fav, although they have so many it is hard to single one out.

Yeah the fifth battle was great. I love the part where Gothmog battles Fingon but can't beat the elfking on his own: it shows the strenght of the Fingon and shows why he's called "the valiant"
I like the part with Húrin giving Turgon and his elves time to escape aswell.

Good point....but why would this war be any different then the other ME wars? Because of the Valar partisipating?
Alatar
July 4th,2003, 12:03 AM
Because it was one of the most terrible wars and one of the largest
Hobbit
July 4th,2003, 12:27 AM
I thought this one was different becouse the five battles of Beleriand were the Noldor facing Morgoth and co, while in the War of Wrath it are mostly the Vanyar (with some help from the Valar and the other elves and three houses of men) that did the trick.
After the fall of Gondolin the Noldor lost their war against Morgoth and then the Vanyar are called to action in a whole new war. At least that's how I considder it.
And Alatar is definatly right about it being one of the most terrible and largest wars.
Lasgalen
July 4th,2003, 03:04 AM
That makes sense. Not too many Noldor left by the time of War of Wrath. And until that point, the Valar had not participated (except Ulmo giving his warnings)

the Valar did not participate in the war of Wraith either, only Fionwe (atleast i think) represented the Maia in it
