There is haldir talking in Elvish to legolas and aragorn. and haldir is so handsome. I love when Haldir talk gimli off. and When haldir welcome Legolas. oh well lets see... i dont like exactly what i said, he is a noncharacter, and he's ugly, and illplayed in the movie. in the book he means nothing. hes stupid in the movie because he is ungraceful, big, unweidly, and altogether unelvish. in the book he simply functions as an...extra. so why they put him in the movie, and such a huge part at that, i cant understand. so why anyone would love him, i dont know. his power trip is evident, he is a guard of lorien, and, man, he wants everyone to know it! esp in the extended, takinf decisions which are not his upon himself. and in the two towers, im rather upset that he and his company are going to helms deep. which makes me hate him even more. and dont say anything about its pj's fault or whatever, i hold haldir to it as part of his developed character in the movie. literally, if this was your question, 'power trip' means he thinks he has a lot of power and it intoxicates him.

Please don't kill me, any anti-Haldir people out there - but I like him in the book - especially when he talks to the hobbits about the fact that they live near the sea, and when he shows them Caras Galadhon from a distance. Ok, I have seen TTT for the second time - and I think it can be said that the boy Haldir rocks... Not my fave Elf (that honour will always go to Leggie) It's heartbreaking when he looks at all the other dead Elves. When I first came across Haldir in the film I thought he was awful cos I quite liked the book Haldir though both were minor roles. I thought he looked really snooty and arrogant as well, very bad superiority complex! *Elbereth doges Haldir fans*
Then I saw it again and I didn't mind him so much. Then as soon as I saw him arrive at Helm's Deep I was converted. I guess I suddenly had a little more insight into his character - some of what I thought was arrogance was actually more sarcasm. I still think he looks a little gay and I would never find him attractive (with or without a blonde wig and elf ears) but I think he's OK personality-wise and that's what counts.
I felt really bad when he died - Haldir showed us what imortality really means. (I did try to put this in a poem but I'm not sure how well it worked!)

I hate elves at Helm's Deep. I think Haldir got what he deserved for being there. First time I saw TTT, everyone cheered when the elves marched in... I cheered when Haldir died. There's a reason it's the last alliance of men and elves. Maybe they should change the script to 'But there were some who resisted. A second-to-last alliance of men and elves marched against the armies of Mordor....' :rolleyes:

Incidentally did Haldir have a choice? Do you really see any elf standing up to Celeborn and Galadriel and saying 'No, it's not my fight'? He should instead be honoured for fighting, they all should be because they helped someone in trouble, most people find that honourable. The greatest good for the greatest number (we are doing utilitarianism at school).

OK, it was different from the book, it has to be. No book can be translated directly onto screen and any interpretation of a book will have its critics. Nor was the film created only for people-who-have-read-the-books. Perhaps we should just see the two different versions of roughly the same story as both being worthy of merit. Does my telling of a story not count because it is not the original? That gets rid of most of the jokes and stories I know, as well as most of the fanfiction.

If you do want to find fault with someone, it's PJ not Haldir you should find fault with. Nor is it Haldir's fault if he is not everyone's vision of beauty - can you honestly tell me you don't like people just because of the way they look?

To my mind even in the books there was some kind of alliance - they were all fighting against the same enemy, hence they are on the same side and will work together to prevent that enemy gaining victory, even if it is not a true alliance.

I totally agree - they did have to die. I guess in that way I like the death. It showed the audience a little more about imortality. There isn't really another way to show how elves can die in a film without it being even more out of character with the original story.
It just happens that we react differently to the death. You cheered and I felt sad - it takes all sorts to make a world!

Its too bad that PJ had to kill Haldir off. He is such an arrogant, elegant Elf. He would have made an awesome warrior at Pelennor Fields. I think my favorite part of his is when he brought the Elfs to Helm's Deep and he walks up the causeway and greets Theodan. The smile he gives when Aragorn hugs him almost makes him...human...lol

I think PJ killed him off because they needed some semi-important character to die for it to be more dramatic. It seems that just the way most movies go.
But it is REALLY sad that he died. I think the music added the sadness also. mecry
