I voted Arwen. ;) She had a line I personally thought was even worse of a clinker, but that one's a close second.
(You'd all better be glad no one has voted for the adorable Sam line, the evil in me tends to come out when hobbits are bashed.... :evilcool: )

I voted Arwen...though I do think Elrond's line was really cheesy too. Oh, and maybe Aragorn's "Let's hunt some Orc" line, which is slightly less cheesy, but still is. Good grief. Note that two cheesy lines are by a couple elves...and all by PJ. Coincidence? I think not. Ya know, I want to re-vote and go with Elrond's, but alas, I cannot.
Tolkien had no cheesy lines. Only good ones!!!
Miruvor
October 8th,2002, 08:23 AM
Why did you put Sam's line in there. That is a Tolkien line, only very slightly changed - see page 126. :(
Should only bash PJ's lines, yes yes.

IMO the winner of the cheeiest line goes to *drum roll*
ELROND
(Arwens line may seem to not make much sense but she obviously knows why how much the ringbearer has gone through, hence the 'not now' part)

I didnt like the Frodo, Elrond or Arwen lines (the Sam one is soooo cute) but.....

October 10th,2002, 04:56 PM
i didn't mind it that much *gasps of horror* it didn't really annoy me at all. it was the combination of the song and the line that was kinda cheesy and that was the only reason the line was so bad...thats my theory anyway!

Of course she will. Its obvious. Why they can't script any decebt stuff for her is beyond me. Its seemed like every line she spoke in FOTR was cheesy or cliched. Or maybe that was just Liv Tyler. Blah...cheesy Arwen line...I hate her breathy voice. *ick* Liv in real life has a softer voice that sounds more like an elf voice than her Arwen-voice.
A friend put it this way..."Why is she so wimpy in real life?" (i.e. her 'bio' on the dvd. She doesn't even TALK about her ROLE, all she cares about is the CLOTHES. Sheesh, leave the clothes for another section. They're great and all (I love them!), but sheesh). But then again, riding around saving hobbits is NOT Arwen's personality. As in, BOOK personality. She sits at home and sews flags. No wonder she had nothing except clothes to talk about on the dvd! lol
Her breathy voice, and that stupid line, get on my nerves. *grrrr*

I agree with you, Samwise, there were worse lines in the film that Tolkien didn't write and would never have written. The shocker for me was spoken by Aragorn toward the end of the film. I don't remember the exact quote but something close to: "Let's go get some Ork". :elfeek:

and why did that shock you? i think it was in keeping with Tolkien's lines. He delievered it well, and if you didn't think that line was true to the book, it probably follows that you didn't think most of the movie was true to the book  I'll just keep this at "I disagree." ;)

In THE DEPARTURE OF BOROMIR, Gimli says, "Well, after them...Dwarves too can go swiftly, and they do not tire sooner than orcs. But it will be a long chase; they have a long start. "
"Yes," said Aragorn, "we need all the endurance of Dwarves. But come! With hope or without hope we will follow the trail of our enemies. And woe to them, if we prove the swifter! We will make such a chase as shall be accounted a marvel among the three kingdoms: Elves, Dwarves, and Men. Forth the three Hunters!"
These are Tolkien's words but I guess that translates to "Let's go hunt some Ork.." That is why it was so funny to me. I don't recall Aragorn saying that but if you could quote the passage from the book, I will most humbly beg your forgiveness and agree that it is in keeping with Tolkien's lines.
I loved the film, Tar. Some of it was true to the book. Some of it wasn't. For those of us who have read it countless times, we enjoy comparing the two.:read:

i'm sorry i just couldnt take that line seriously. It reminded me of another movie (though i cant remember what it was now). It made me think more of ...o i dnt know..Bruce Willis or someone than Aragorn. That is just me though, i know loadsa ppl loved the line, so i'm not gnna argue :) I think the extended version is gonna be the best coz more of the things i missed will be in there and i wont mind the other things as much then.

Hi Tar: I'd love to know what discrepancies bugged you. For me the biggest one was the presence of Arwen where she should not have been. So of course in the poll I voted for Arwen having the cheeziest line because she never said it. I don't think she speaks at all in Rivendell, does she? :shhh:

Undomiel, That's exactly how I felt when I first saw the film. Bruce Willis! lol That's a good one. But when I saw it again I had to laugh, don't know why, I think the first time I took the film too seriously and was so disappointed, but on seeing it the second time I relaxed more and enjoyed it for what it was and didn't moan mecry so much.

I kinda liked both of Arwen's lines. (becomes really tiny and timid) But the one line that HAS to go? I can't think of one! I love them all! (now THAT was cheesy)

Hi guys! I just found this thread (I don't come into this forum very often). It looks like most everyone hates the Arwen line.........hmmm.........I don't like it much myself, but I had to vote for the Elrond one, simply because it makes me laugh out loud every time I watch the movie! lol Especially with the music building right then! I used to think that maybe it would sound better without music. But then he says it on the behind the scenes without music and it's even funnier!
Oh, and shame on anyone who voted for the Sam quote! :nono: I thought that was the cutest line! Especially when he says it at the end. It made me cry! mecry

Oh, by the way. I just thought I would mention that the Frodo quote goes "Shire....Baggins? But that would lead them here!"
You said Baggins.....Shire. Anyway......... : D

yeah. i think it's difiicult for any actor to carry off saying a line that has already been said straight before. It just doesnt ever work. (i noticed this the other day in HP)

Oops. I accidently voted for Sam's line when it's one of my favorites. It's so sweet.
I guess my least favorite line would have to be either Arwen's or Elrond's because I also love Frodo's line.

Sam's line isn't cheesy--it's important to the story! It shows just how dedicated he is to Frodo and his intent to keep the promise he made (to the elves in the book, to Gandalf in the movie).
What about the dwarf tossing lines? Hasn't anyone thought those were the least bit cheesy????

My vote for Elrond also. I alomost assumed he would be able to count to 9, living for 2 ages od Middle-earth now!
But I am quite perplex why you put in Sam's line?????? I LOVE THAT LINE!! It's my very favorite, it makes me cry everytime because he is so honest and simple when he says that!

Agreed - Sam has to explain to the audience that he's sticking by Frodo, since the scene where he actually promised was cut out. It's an important line.
Yeah, the dwarf tossing reference made me groan. pfbbt

Elrond's line was so cheesy it sounded cool. lol
And I agree, Sam's line wasn't cheesy at all. It really moved me and showed me how much dedicated and loyal he was to Frodo and we get a sense of strong friendship that will build as the story progresses.
I did however cringe at Arwen's lines. :mmmm:

Boromir knew. The line before it was "A-Aragorn... this is Isidur's heir." Hoho, Boromir knew.
It was basically for the non-book people who didn't know. Also to add some drama, and of course lines for the Lego-lovers.

I think Boromir knew that a man named Aragorn was Isildur's heir, he just didn't know that the man sitting in front of him was Aragorn.
Yeah, it was a total intro for the audience. And we'll take just about all the Legolas lines we can get our sweaty little palms on, thank you. ;)

Maybe Elrond was a bad host and didn't introduce everyone.
Maybe he could have made sure everyone had nametags.
"Hello, My Name Is: Gimli
And I Am A: Dwarf"
lol
All he said by way of introduction was that they were all there representing their races and to discuss the fate of this Ring.

the council of elrond editorial right? I don't know if it's just me but I thought that when he was doing certain takes, he seemed to say that line slightly faster than the norm.

Love the vote - most amusing debate thus far also :-)
I have to say I voted for Frodo's line. I agree with what people have said about Arwen's line - it's very cheesy. But Frodo's apparent blinding flash of realisation is so bone-headed.
'But...that will lead them *here*!'
Gee, ya think so!? By Eru's codpeice Mr Baggins, I'm glad you mentioned it because I sure as hell couldn't see it that one marching over the horizon under a vast pall of dust, beating drums and setting a crown of fire upon the horizon.

I guess I'm a sap, because those "cheesy lines " are some of my favorites!
Arwen's seem faithless - like she has no clue of Frodo's strength
P.K. Brandybuck
April 16th,2003, 01:19 AM
See I understand Arwen's line this way: She just finished busting her hump trying to save Frodo and she knew that his safety was important to Aragorn and she probably felt frustration and sadness as he was a hobbit and elves look upon hobbits like innocent and small creatures that need protection.
She was probably also upset that she was going to fail Bilbo also.
well...that's just my take on it, anyway.
I actually like Sam's line - I voted for Elrond's line.
