View Full Version : Mortars/Bombs at Helm's Deep

Neat! It'll be interesting to speculate about the exact nature of these devices. Depending on the power of Saruman's explosive substance you would think there would be need for a large device able to hold enough explosives to destroy the Helm's wall. The image from Fantasy Planet suggests something heavy like a large brazier. It almost looks like a mortar - a device that fires shells at steep trajectories.
The highlighted screen capture from the Trailer seems to point to a smaller handheld device though like a hand grenade, or maybe it just looks that way. It could even be that the Uruk-hai carry both large devices for demolition purposes and smaller ones to use against personnel. Grenades have been in use since the 15th Century so that's not unrealistic. It may also explain why the explosive that blasted the Helm's wall only rocked the Hornburg without destroying it completely. :Orc:

What a moment of desperation, when Aragorn yells Legolas to take the guy down and he dosen't manage it in time.

hey....Legolas hit him twice.....i'd like to see anyone else take on my Leggy in archery!! and besides, he could only hit him where the armour was weak, and he did both times

Yes, it is alot to take into account. But even if Legolas had shot him dead before he made a jump someone would of picked up the torch to do his duty. So it was gonna happen.

It was sweet as the Deeping Wall was breached. From Aragorn's line, "Shoot him down!" To the pause before the blast, to the actual breach ws breathtaking.

**ducking as people throw chunks of wall at her** my dad when we were in the theatre yelled "OMG it's the Olympics!!" when that orc was running...... I was sooooooo embarrassed (I wanted to "trout" him :trout: ).
I didn't think that any of the elves should have died in that battle. But, alas, so is war.

I really think it was a bit of fun that PJ had at our expense as a touch of 'tongue in cheek' humor that spilled over from some of his other previous movies. Personally, I thought it was a bit high on the good old cheese meter.

i agree that the Elves shouldn't have died...they weren't even there in the books....oh well, PJ did a great job. When I saw TTT for the first time, and when some Elves died right at the beginning of the fight, I was like to my friend "No! My poor Elves!" she just looked at me. (she still thinks i'm weird because i speak Sindarin to some extent[no one can speak it fluently], so I tell them "I'm not weird...I'm gifted")

PJ also made a tongue-in-cheek reference to Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness. You know how Saruman pushes Grima's hand with the candle in it away from the gunpowder? Now look at the scene in AOD as Ash makes the gunpowder. LOL.

Yeah, Wormtongue was pretty stupid. But hey, it would have been hilarious if he got too close with the candle and got blown into oblivion. he was a messed-up guy. I'm sure some fans wouldn't have minded if that did happen, though lol j/k

I wouldn't have minded!!! lol that guy looked freaky in the light of Saruman's place!!!!! And I thought he looked freaky in that dark room where Theoden's son was dying :o ok, I'm messed up!!!! Hey, Elvenwanderer, My brother leaned over to me and goes "The world's first explosive" When the orc jumped into the bomb thing. I missed some diologue on the movie cause he kept leaning over and telling me stuff but hey--he's 13!!! (immature brat. lol)

Did any one notice how when the uruk was running with the torch to blow himself up, how he was so full of energy, and how he was bucking his head back and forth like a wild horse would. I thought that was really cool. The Uruk just couldnt wait to kill himself talk about devotion.

I think it's pretty advanced of the orcs and uruks to be able to construct such powerful explosives that are ablt to blow up an entire wall and inflict heavy damages and casualties in the battle of helm's deep.
And since we aren't talking about fighting styles here, I'll move this from the Armoury to the Smithy.

Well they might not have died Celebriel, if you check on the scene when the Uruks try to reach the Hornburg through the side staircase once they crossed the wall, you can see some elves on the stairs and the battlements as well as the face of the mountain firing arrows at them , obviously not many, but some, I don't think they all dies there, and I would even venture to say that we might see them showing up at the Field of Celebrant. As for the Olympic Uruk, he didn't have body armour, he just had this Uruk Berseker Mask, so I think the only possible shoot to bring him down would have bee nthe head, and then surely another Uruk (intelligence allowing) would have picked the torch and finished the jobpfbbt
*sorry Uruks, you are determined and fierce, but that doesn't require much intelligence hehehe (joking)
