What you think about that movie?
and What it is about?

Which one my good Raistlin? ;)
personally, I am a great fan of Highlander, the first movie. First film i ever remember seeing as a kid and that along with the great music and swordplay, hooked me into the world of immortals.
Highlander essentially the follows of the exiled Scottish Highlander Connor McCleod...exiled because he is, well...immortal. The first movie, for me, is great B-movie fodder with some classic performances by Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.
The following 2 movies in the series are...to say the least...perhaps the worst sequels ever thought of...giving Highlander a very science-fictionesque taint which was awful. However the 4th Highlander, Endgame, brought the universe back to earth. yet this didn't help matters, along with a wretched plot and inconsequential acting...Endgame did nothing for Highlander itself.
however, if u just want to watch a flick for good kicks...there is the greatest scene from Endgame where a priest makes good use of a semi-automatic. very cool
hope this helped.

I saw the movie on TV. I think it is Highlander:Endgame. I like the fighting. It is cool. But I am not know about the story line.

highlander was a cartoon at one time...although i don't recall it being very much like the movies, being made for kids and all
Ronin
October 15th,2002, 11:15 AM
Yeah, i remember the cartoon...a great while back ;)
it was decent stuff, but definitely nothing that could last. hmmm...quite like the latter movies. and if there's anything i've always wanted to get...its a katana.

guys and their sword envy.....its Freudian.....
my opinions on the Highlander movies are pretty well known heheh and theyre not flattering...tho i have to say the sequels dod something i would not have imagined could be done!! they made the original one look good:rolleyes: lol even with plotholes you could drive a tank thru..... they were that bad
pity...there was tons of potential there....but thats the way it goes i guess....
i did like the TV series tho...ok it got a bit cheezy at times, and the whole "chick of the week" thing was a bit irritating, but it had heart and it was enjoyable...had a cute lead, and some stand out characters....just showed what the movies could have done, but didnt.....
and endgame? less said there the best....tho by the time you know who gets the chop, its kind of a mercy killing:rolleyes: lol lol

I've always loved Highlander. Ok, yes, its a bit cheesy... Connery and Lambert's accents are very dodgy... but you gotta love the Kurgan.
Ronin
October 15th,2002, 09:15 PM
Endgame is what mates of mine consider "unmentionable"...even more so than the 2 ridiculous sequels to the original Highlander. at least, and a very big at least, the 2 previous sequels were campy enough that they could be laughed at (tho not for too long) by fans. (i have to admit, one scene with Connery and Lambert as they compare how many bullet holes riddled their bodies ranks up there with some of my favorite non-dramatic scenes). but Endgame...it abandoned the mythos of Highlander, the stuff so obvious that even those who haven't followed the series were taken aback by it.
the original movie drew me in but the series cemented all love for it ;) Adrian Paul, was perfect for the next MacLeod...enough old boy humour and really fantastic sword play (not much to compare with, sadly) to keep it interesting. greatest application of a Queen song (Who Wants to Live Forever) is when Tessa dies...ok, so i'm showing how way too involved i am in it...but there we are.
and of course its Freudian...isn't everything lol :naughty:
Catz
October 15th,2002, 09:27 PM
i think the major plus of the TV series was that it set up its own mythology, within, but not adhereing too strictly to, that which was used in the original movie......and then , they stuck to it!!!! it gave it a coherence that the movies could never match...even if they tried, and i dont think they didlol
the series, due to its nature could also delve into things that movies couldnt....giving characters a roundedness that they wouldnt have had, even had the movies not been merde and i liked the use of the watchers to give a mortal perspective onto the whole thing....hehehe i also loved the character Methos.....a great character....you were never quite sure what he would do...wonderful anodyne to Pauls honourable "do the right thing" Duncan....sides, Peter Wingfeilds cute;) lol
love the alteration to the sig btw. R....

Yeah... nice sig, sweetie;) Which village is that, then?lol
Wish i could add something to this debate, but i never saw the tv series....sorry.:(
Catz
October 15th,2002, 10:40 PM
well....that was enlightening lollollol;)
the series reminded me of "Forever Knight" another TV show that took an existing mythos and basically made it its own.....the TV version of Highlander had that internal logic that aids suspension of disbelief, and allowed you into its world. It also allowed an intimacy of scale that a movie cannot give, which is not to say that it couldnt address large stories....the one in which the horsemen returned was a good example of that....that the apocrophyl 4 horsemen were in fact a group of immortals who terrorised Europe for thousands of years, and became creatures of legend...thats a pretty ambitious story....which they pulled off rather well in my view...
and thats the other problem with the movies.....none of them had a story....just set pieces....a good script would have helped a lot and an actual plotlollol

October 16th,2002, 01:51 PM
if not the movies (the first at least should be watched)...then the series is wholeheartedly recommended...very few had that kind of longevity and fan base. obsessive at that ;)
i think that was, ultimately, the greatest failing of Highlander, the original movie. the plot was ridiculously simple and offered nothing to the viewer to truly abandon oneself in the immortal realm. yet, as u said, i don't think it ever could match what the series did...simply based on the inherent differences between film and tv. the intimacy that tv series naturally create draws the audience in...allowing much more personal and indepth looks at characters and plot lines. the short, yet extended nature of series allows for character archs to be extended over time and plots to be developed, slowly or quickly as dependant on the eventual conclusion of the story. only in the rarest of examples, can film match that intimate and indepth look into the various facets of a story...plot, character, ect. movies are very short in comparison to tv shows...and have an "all or nothing" mindset which is critical in trying to find the most general audience possible. really goes back to if the director and the studio have the courage to put out there what they want to see...a personal story...instead of a mass product.
love methos lol ...the perfect foil to MacLeod...good but with a very wicked mindset.
oh...thanks, thought the new sig was much more appropriate
Catz
October 16th,2002, 03:30 PM
sorreeee .... just being honest....
well.....honesty is always appreciated:cool:
course, so's content.... lol
i think that highlander is probably the only "movie turned TV series" other than Buffy, that was better than the movie....and for much the same reasons......in the TV series they didnt talk down to the viewer....they allowed plots to develop, and characters to become complex, contradictory and far more "real"
and a good deal of that is, as you say part of the inherent qualities of TV spot v film....and i think thats why the movie annoys me so.....so much potential, squandered.....and im not even going to mention the sequels, which truely were so bad i cant believe they even released them...they really were a slap in the face for those whod stuck by the franchise
i would love to be able to just watch the movie and ignore its failings...it has some wonderful sequences......but they just point up how badly it was served in other parts....
mmmm Methos...yummm heheheh...just the thing any long lived series needs, a morally ambiguous character....not so great in RL, but necessary in a work of fiction for dramatic tension
:catz:
Ronin
October 17th,2002, 07:44 PM
Buffy i could never get into....the movie was nice and campy but i could just never get over believing Gellar was slayer-quality...not like there is base stock anyway lol
true enough about how so much potential was squandered by those involved with Highlander (and as u can see by Endgame, those two sequels are completely ignored)...but, as i've said before, special love for the original so while i can point out its numerous faults with the best of them...i can still enjoy it on some level. after all, it is because of the movie that we have the TV show. and Christopher Lambert is a righteous European actor...so thats nice to see in the American market.

Yeah the series are great, we had them on TV this summer in Bulgaria. Tho I like Christoff Lambert(sp) a lot more than Adrian Paul ;).
love methos ...the perfect foil to MacLeod...good but with a very wicked mindset.
"I was born before chivalry" (or something of that sense) heheh. You have to love him lol
Ronin
October 18th,2002, 02:50 AM
Lambert the different type of hero as compared to Paul....both pretty freakin' cool :grin"
lol ....a character who says anything close to that...kick tooshie ;)
Catz
October 18th,2002, 03:35 AM
Paul could be a little "pretty" at times, but that improved as the series went along....he kind of grew into the character...
and Methos....what a character lol....loved the way they did that story arc with the Horsemen.....you were never quite sure whose game he was playing.....not even at the end, with the bad guys beaten....youre left wondering....love it
:catz:
Ronin
October 18th,2002, 04:52 PM
aye, love it when a movie or tv series is intelligent enough to give a character or story arch where the audience has to actually participate in to under...lol...i know most americans hate it...;)
and yeah, liked the fact that Paul was give the chance and the time to grow.

Oh yea!
I've only ever seen the TV Series of Highlander with Adrian Paul (and that was in French)
I watched it for years when I went on holiday to see my nan. I loved it (especially Queen's Princes of the Universe punctuating the adverts.
I though it was wonderful (especially the sword-fights).

Iliked the original film. The series with Adrian Paul was great. I agree with Catz that it is much better than the film purely because the story lines are more believable.
Ronin I agree Queen are simply the best band ever.

i have always loved highlander...before i even knew that tolkien existed it was my obessesion. I was introduced first by the series on tv and had yet another tv crush- Richie Ryan. Then i of course saw the movie and enjoyed that just as much.
I never bothered with the sequels and have YET to see Endgame sadly..i will get right to that, now that i am reminded it exists.
Ronin
November 5th,2002, 01:54 AM
i'll behave missy..as long as those claws are retracted ;) lol
good deal Togo, and actually have to agree about knowing the Highlander universe more thoroughly than i knew that of Tolkien's. while the movies themselves truly can't even hold a candle to the TV series - Endgame is worth enough to see, if thoroughly disappointing...i mean, it really is wretched
Togo Bleecker
November 5th,2002, 01:59 AM
eek that doesnt sound good...define "wretched"
Ronin
November 5th,2002, 02:28 AM
well...wretched meaning that the movies have never really added anything to the Highlander mythos. and with Endgame, it diverges radically from said mythos...presenting some very abrasive ideas. to give u an idea, with the next Highlander movie they're planning...not even going to regard Endgame as happening.
Togo Bleecker
November 5th,2002, 03:33 AM
i have heard that what they have set up is a game between the last two immortals, Duncan and Methos, if anything i want to see who wins (yay methos!)..i did not know that another movie was even coming out...
Catz
November 5th,2002, 07:24 AM
In endgame you mean Togo?
endgame pits Duncan and Conor MacCloud against each other.....and lets be honest here, its a mercy killing:rolleyes:
its tragic......really tragic.......in the sense of "oh my god how could you do that" such a pity......again so much potential and all wasted.....
:catz:
Togo Bleecker
November 6th,2002, 01:48 AM
yah i was talking about endgame, but i thought the battle was between methos and duncan, i suppose clan member vs. clan member will make it even more unbelievable, the more i type on this thread the more i wanna see the movie!!
Ronin
November 8th,2002, 04:22 PM
for ur own sanity mate, don't get too excited about seeing Endgame. unfortunately Methos wasn't there...and to be hoenst, i don't think even he could have saved the utter refuse that Endgame turned about to be. however saying that.....
Monks with submachine guns is the coolest thing i have ever seen  lol

November 8th,2002, 09:17 PM
mmmm yeah....poor Methos got about 10 minutes screen time all up, if that......

In mentioning the series and Endgame, one of my favorite characters was Joe!
The first movie is a must see, followed by the series, though I have yet to find them on DVD or tape for that matter, then Endgame. Sure it could have been better, but look what all they had to work with...

my it has been a long time since i have poked my head into this thread BUT i have good news Highlander the Series is back on the air on TNN the first "television network for men" at 2:00 (thats mountain time) every weekday. Hmm guess its a manly show but anyway aside from that i have coming bearing some other news. It occured to me after watching todays episode that it has been a looooong time since i have ever seen a highlander rp floating about. What im wondering is, if i made a thread here, in the Gaming board would any of you people be interested in coming up with a highlander Storyline?? I'll check back to see what you guys think later, now i must go clean. -sighs-
