i didn't realy like bridgit jones' diary....for a start it had hugh grant in it...he REALLY annoys me with his 'hugh grant-ness'!!!

Daisy Gamgee
October 17th,2002, 02:41 PM
I normally can't stand Hugh Grant, but I thnik him playing the "bad" guy really suited him. And apparently I am in danger of becoming Brigdet, accoridng to my friends and even my mumlol

Bonos-Girl
October 17th,2002, 04:58 PM
the thing is that i love colin firth and to me it was kinda obvious that he would win!!! The only film with hugh grant in it i liked was mickey blue eyes which is hilarious!!!

Ronin
October 17th,2002, 09:14 PM
ugh...hated mickey blue eyes!! i'd just stick with classic grant fodder like Notting Hill ;)

wow...great list y'all...some classics, some definite new ones...especially our Lady Arien, EverAfter and The Craft? :elfeek: (j/k)

lets see, here's my top ten with some great runners up at the end...in a very particular order....

11. Braveheart
10. The Fellowship of the Ring (i only put this here because i am a true Tolkien freak - a movie needs years of rewatching to become truly considered one of the ten best of all time)
9. Saving Private Ryan
8. Schindler's List
7. Raiders of the Lost Ark
6. The Godfather Part I
5. Apocalypse Now Redux
4. Empire Strikes Back
3. The Godfather Part II
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
1. I haven't seen my number one movie of all time...tho PJ might be able to settle that account for me ;)

Some other films that just catch my breath:
Frailty (most underrated movie of the year!)
Memento & Insomnia (both deserving of Oscar recognition but neither has nor shall achieve it)
Ameilie (a film of life)
In the Bedroom (shocking)
High Fidelity (totally agree with the person who called it the greatest dark romantic comedy)
Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels and Snatch - quite possibly the greatest comedies ever...Guy Ritchie may not have taste (bad joke) but he can direct a bloody great movie!

Catz

I would love to meet a bloke like Mark Darcy - I thought Colin Firth was great in the part - do you reackon he's like that in real life?

Another couple of good nobrain movies are Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy - definately the best Adam Sandler ones about.

And I think someones said it before, but Empire of the Sun is a class movie:thumbs:

Gatsby
October 18th,2002, 02:26 AM
was it colin firth who played mr. darcy in Bridget jones's diary? cuz if he did that would be wonderfully ironic, because in the book the girls (jude, shazzer, and bridget) have an unhealthy obsession with mr. firth... i think it's funny :)

:catz:

Ronin
October 25th,2002, 01:49 AM
loved the frighteners, just watched it yesterday....and the others, most glad u agree...fantastic movie.

only watched one NZ movie, outside of PJ's early efforts...can't for the life of me remember what it is....french exchange student comes to NZ...something like that...

Catz
October 25th,2002, 08:29 AM
mmm i remember the movie...dont recall the name......it wasnt that memorable really......but it was an adolescent effort in terms of where the filmaking industry was in NZ at the time....a sort of coming of age....theres better around, believe me and the great thing about PJ is that NZ film is finally starting to take itself seriously, and not just trying to be a cheap stand in location for quickie US horror/shchlock fests...tho it is fun playing spot the location lol......the only reason ive yet come up with for watching the Tommyknockers  roflmao
:catz:

Ronin
October 25th,2002, 11:44 AM
yeah, it was typically adolescent...quited related to the film's content...believe the movie came out in the mid 90's, somewhere around there. heard nothing but good things about how PJ's LOTR has catalyzed the NZ filmmaking industry, which is fantastic...even if i can't see the results, at least easily, much appreciation from outside the box...(ever seen Rabbit Proof Fence?)

lol....spot the location...always fun...especially around San Francisco and London, and Tommknockers ...u just might right there ;)

Catz
October 25th,2002, 12:00 PM
there has always been a lot of talent in NZ as far as the visual arts goes, just never the money or the interest for most of them to move outside of TV work and into film....thats what these movies have done...opened up film as a viable option, which is great....
but weve always had great edgy stuff around, just usually in a TV or short film format....stuff like "Jewels Darl" about a transsexual and the life she leads....it was a great piece....but now the kids that would have made that sort of material are now looking at features...very cool.....itll be interesting in a few more years.....

Well, to those of you who don't like Titanic, pfbbt pfbbt pfbbt pfbbt pfbbt , to you too. I wasn't too fond of the romance story, but as a movie I thought it was as well made and enduring a piece of movie making as Gone With the Wind. And well, I have no other excuse. :mmmm:

Also, I forgot to put "Persuasion" on my list, which should be on my list for 10 best 'romantic' movies, also.

I like Titanic, a very good film, it was really well made I thought, maybe just me but never mind. :)

Ronin
October 28th,2002, 11:12 PM
no, have to agree there Mir...Titanic, at parts...explicitly following the history of the sinking as i knew it, was wonderful. in parts...hauntingly tragic. but the romance utterly ruined it for me....hehe...as did Kate's nibblets ;) lol

Gone with the Wind...loved the locations, the minor actors, have undying respect for the main actors, totally engrossed by the cinematography...but it did a horrible, horrible injustice to the book, and couldn't ignore that.

Catz
October 29th,2002, 12:27 AM
hey even if i didnt like Titanic....plenty of other people did....damned if i know why;) lol im joking!!!!.....but there you go lol....its always gonna be a matter of taste in the end...and technically, the bits of it that ive forced myself to watch have been good, tho the pacing was slow....i just disliked the story...but the effects and so on were fine....

One thing about Legends of the Fall... it was SO beautifully shot... heartbreakingly beautiful in parts... so deserving of the accolades. I loved the weave of relationships in the film.... Aiden Quinn was brilliant... Brad, tho beautiful to look at (remember the bit with him .. bare chested.. standing at the window??:naughty: :naughty: :naughty: )... was pretty... Brad. There are so many different pieces of the film i love.... too many to choose a favourite. The overriding thing in my mind is still the stunning Cinematography:cool:

It warms my heart to see so many other lovers of Legends of the Fall. I just love that movie, I'm glad others find joy in it too.:)

Sorry haven't seen The Piano.

Miruvor
October 31st,2002, 09:23 AM
Sure, the Piano was a great movie and I thought Holly's acting for never saying a word was superb. (Must have been SO easy to learn lines for.) I was really glad Anna Paquin won the award she got. Great acting.
When I first saw FOTR, I thought of the Piano, because of it's taking place in New Zealand, and because that scene of Sam drowning in slow motion and suddenly coming back to life was so like the similar scene in the Piano, that I was kind of shocked. Too copycat.

Little Devil
October 31st,2002, 02:45 PM
Never seen the Piano, but love the music.

Ronin
October 31st,2002, 07:04 PM
absolutely Ilm, Legends was pricelessly shot...the wilderness that was captured on film, was so wonderously done...any movie that can manage to do that so seamlessly deserves every accolade it can manage. however...we seem to differ when it comes to Brad ;) lol

ach, and i forgot The Piano! really, a beautiful movie...so movingly emotionaly...both Holly and Paquin, just brilliant.
but Miruvor, not having any lines to speak is probably the toughest job for an actor to have...for all the emotion and desires and passions of their character have to be expressed through their body, which is one of the hardest mediums to succeed in.
and come on, copy cat? u're kidding right?

Ilmarė
October 31st,2002, 09:38 PM
lol Thought we might disagree... Brad isn't the greatest actor in the world... but damn.. he's so pretty to look at.:naughty: lol lol
So.. what was your favourite part of the film?

Adunauriel
October 31st,2002, 09:58 PM
IIm, I hope you don't mind if I answer. As I've said before, my fave part is the whole ending in a way. In particular thou it's the Jail scene where Susanna visits Tristen. If I don't cry during any other part, this one will get me. It's just so ripping at the heart for me. I love that part.mecry :loveyou:

Miruvor
November 1st,2002, 12:12 AM
Ronin - did you not see the similarity in the two drowning scenes? How could you miss it !

As for Holly's acting. I agree, it was excellent. I'm sure the acting part is somewhat HARD, and she did great. I only mentioned the 'memorization of lines' - or thought I did.

Is this not a top film thread, rather than general movie discussion ;-)

Anyway here are my favourites.

1. Afterhours
2. Excaliber
3. Blade Runner
4. Sparticus
5. The Empire Stikes Back
6. Fellowship of the Ring
7. The Wicker Man
8. The Devil Rides Out (gotta love it)
9. Enter the Dragon (all about my wife)
10. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Ilm...*looks all huffy*...i so expected more from u than just to become enamored by a pretty face ;) lol
but my favorite part? hmmm...almost have to agree with teddy, beautifully emotive scene there, but granted i haven't watched the movie in 5 or 6 years.

Miruvor, of course i noticed the similarity between the two scenes...not that it jumped up at me when i first saw FOTR, but definitely noticed it later on. but copy cat...that really is a little extreme. and if we want to get into particulars...;)...we could say that the Piano was copycatting Tolkien who penned the scene some 40 years earlier. but...that would be illogical wouldn't it? j/k lol

fatty....:elfeek:...Excaliber? really...sometimes u do surprise me, old man

Ronin
November 1st,2002, 05:27 PM
*looks at least slightly placated* ;) lol

actually, i think thats the case with a lot of the movies we genuinely love...why pick out a favorite scene when its the conglomeration of scenes that u love. i have GOT to rewatch Legends of the Fall...remember too little about the war scenes.
ach, Saving Private Ryan...what a beautifully made, acted film...always takes my breath away. and the invasion scene...rips my heart out.
LOL lol too right BG, memphis belle is a great flick...tho once again, another film i have been neglecting as of yet! ;)

*glances at Fattys list....and sighs as she adds yet another one to her list*
The Wicker Man....one of the best English horror movies IMO...and its been shamefully treated....and i guess just for the cinematography id have to put Excalibur on any "best" list....
and hell, theres nothing wrong with pretty...as long as they can act too...which youd think was kind of a prerequisite...but doesnt appear to belol lol:rolleyes:

I agree with IImare & Ronin. Saving Private Ryan, easily on my top 10 list. Loved that movie. It's so tragic thou, really har to watch. Even harder to believe the fact that it's a fictional account of something that could have happened in that war. The opening scene where all those soldiers die. Almost unbarable.:mmmm:

Ilmarė
November 2nd,2002, 12:44 AM
You SO have to re watch "Legends" again, Ro. The scene where Henry Thomas is struggling to see after a mustard gas attack... and then is shot.. falling onto the barbed wire... and Brad goes in to help him... and he dies in Brad's arms.... just heartbreaking.
"Saving Private Ryan".. the invasion.. while gruesome.. is indellibly imprinted on my brain...just so brutally compelling.. in the same way "Schindler's List" was. Just fantastic film making.

war film with Harrison Ford eh? war or patriot drama?

Schindler's List...pretty sure i have it on my list, but what a wonderful film...first saw it when i was 10, brilliant production. and war films as themselves? true enough that a lot of films are pretty much the same ditty...tho there are some...that just take ur breath away.

and ive just never gotten into the war genre....mate of mine loves war movies, but its one of those things thats very hard to find a new voice for...other than to make them more and more graphic and gory...but as you say Ronin, there are the standouts...

 The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the best animated films ever made.Such a simple storyline.. such wonderful characters. I LOVE Jack Skellington...really feel for the guy!! Have to watch it frequently... or i get withdrawls!

Did anyone here see the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers? If not you really should try and find it, (and hopefully it wasn't only in America). It was amazing, like Ryan it was about WWII. It was at some times more difficult to watch then Ryan. Beautifully done. I wasn't drawn into it as quickly as I was into Ryan, but once I was I couldn't get enough of it.:) I Highly recomend it to anyone who loved Saving Private Ryan.:)

But my number one chick flick of all time would have to be Bridget Jones - I have a real affinity for that film - that is so gonna be me in 10 years time - unfortunatley minus the dashing Mark Darcylol

So this comes on the last page but will listing my fav's here make me seem out of place? My top ten would have to go like this and the only order I would place upon them would be number one has to be........

1. Muppet Christmas Carol
2. Terms of Endearment
3. The Spitfire Grill
4. Lord of the Rings - FotR
5. Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea
6. Harry Potter and Sorcerers Stone (sucker for cute cheesey kids)
7. Gladiator (Russell Crowe melts my butter)
8. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
9. The Goonies
10. Philadelphia (Tom Hanks is just peachy, always)

Though no particular order is required for the 2 through 10 I have to tell you my favorite movie of all time word for word is Muppet Christmas Carol....ALL MUPPET MOVIES ROCK!!!

The Labyrinth - way cool movie:thumbs:
How come the movies we used to get as kids seem so much more classy than the kids stuff they churn out today (eg stuff like Spy Kidsetc). Or is it just retrospect vision that makes them seem a whole lot better:huh:

Lintefaniel
November 18th,2002, 04:30 AM
It's a little of both I think. The problem with today is we're all used to the special effects that we're revolutionary when our generation was introduced to Labyrinth, Legend, Gremlins, Not to mention Star Wars and any ILM based/produced flick... Despite the cheese of it, there ain't nothing like the good stuff the 1980's gave us.....:whoohoo:

Who isn't a fan of Tom Hanks??!! Shawshank is an unexpected Stephen King masterpiece. I know that it isn't unusual for him to write a non-horror story, but it's unlike most of his stories. I love it.

Daisy Gamgee
November 21st,2002, 12:21 AM
I never realised Shawshank Redemption was a Stephen King. I normally don't like Stephen King adaptions - I always find they are good, until the end, which is a major let down - IT being a very fine example. Shawshank was good though:thumbs:

Anyone seen Out of Sight? I think thats a really good movie (doesn't hurt that George Clooney is easy on the eye;) ) I like the style its filmed in. I think its by the same guy who did Oceans Eleven, though could be wrong, which I think is another good film, and with even more eye candy (Pitt, Clooney, Damon and Garcia - in one film - )

Miruvor
November 21st,2002, 12:31 AM
Yes, way over looked, 'Out of Site' was a goodie. That one and 'Fight Club', I resisted seeing for a long time, thinking I wouldn't like them, but surprisingly, they were excellent.

Speaking of Edward Norton, 'American History X', 'Score', 'Primal Fear', and especially 'Rounders', were all excellent showcases for him.

Ronin
November 21st,2002, 07:40 PM
Out of Sight was filmed by director Steven Soderbergh - and u're right, also directed Ocean's 11, Erin Brokovich and Traffic...just to name a few. also coming out with another Clooney vehicle called Solaris, a space "drama" - of sorts. excellent movies...simply adore the mans sense of vision and style.

both Shawshank and The Green Mile are simply the best adaptations to screen of King's written work.

Miruvor, completely agree...Norton is absolutely fantastic in Fight Club and American History X (which i'm still annoyed that he didn't take the oscar home for). of the list tho, X is my favorite movie with Club being right up there...excellent movies

Darth Saruman
November 22nd,2002, 01:07 AM

2. Schindler's List
3. The Godfather
4. The Godfather pt. 2
5. The Insider
6. Platoon
7. The Thin Red Line
8. The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
9. The Green Mile
10. Saving Private Ryan
(others: The Hurricane, Heat, Citizen Kane, Tombstone, Gladiator, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Fargo, Pulp Fiction)
note: Star Wars is in a class by itself for me. supercedes all others.

Lintefaniel
November 22nd,2002, 06:52 AM
Again! I must agree!! On two things, The Green Mile and Gary Oldman! I don't know about you, but I found him terribly alluring as a turn of the century blood sucker!! It was all the combination of the accent, the costume he wears in London and the tasty way he gathers his victims to him....Not to mention the haunting way he defies the pietous priests and curses God when he finds his true love dead. Forgive me, I don't intend to sound blasphemous, but it's awfully intriguing to see emotions row the way his do. Green Mile was beautiful but it disturbed me in the end. Just the guy who actually did the killings of the little girls was too much. But Michael Clark Duncan melts my heart...

Ah Lintefaniel... a sister in arms!! Gary Oldman is a rarity amongst actors... someone who hasn't sold out to commercialism.. who chooses his roles according to their merit...and what he can learn and give as an actor. He constantly challenges himself with a range of roles. I absolutely ADORED him in "Bram Stoker's Dracula"... because he played the character with a new twist... he gave heart and substance to the Count. I broke my heart at the end of the film... the way he searched for his soul mate.. found her again.. then lost her.. just heartbreaking.
As an actor.. he has the ability to make me believe in the character he is playing... totally. He was outstanding in "Sid and Nancy", "P**ck Up You Ears", "The Fifth Element"... lord, could go on all day about him!!!... Feel free to PM me if you want to drool a bit!!
Have to agree Lintefaniel... Michael Clark Duncan is a sweetie... was just astounding in "The Green Mile"
"Braveheart" was a good movie... if historically inaccurate... the ending upsets me every time i see it.

Lintefaniel
November 26th,2002, 08:54 AM
I've only seen parts of Sid and Nancy and I don't think I have heard of the other title, but yes he's an enjoyable, refreshing actor! I have heard a great deal about Braveheart and it's inaccuracy, sadly i have never had the heart to see all of it in it's entirety, just bits and pieces. Being from Scotland I see you would have a bit of an advantage in that subject, eh? All though I see you are online right now, I will PM the next time I am online because I really should be in bed! I am due to finally get my chance at HP and the Chamber of Secrets in the morning!! But I will PM you the soonest I return to the community! By the way, do you recall G.Oldman in Air Force One? I think he made the movie that much better!! Just my opinion......;)

Ilmarė
November 26th,2002, 12:39 PM
 Yes.. i do recall him in that movie... he really made it for me... was his usual excellent self!
Ah... the other film is about the life of gay playwright Joe Orton... Oldman is absolutely outstanding in it... as is Alfred Molina. Look forward to talking with u!!

Daisy Gamgee
November 27th,2002, 12:58 AM
Have you seen the One 2 One advert with Gary Oldman in? For some reason, I always think he appears really wise when he talks. I think he plays an excellent baddy.
I'm gonna appear really ignorant, but in what way was Braveheart inaccurate? (I only listened in history if we were talking about modern history).
ps Ilmare, I've decided to be a primary school teacher so am now just waiting to see if I got a place at Uni. Although once I'm at Uni, I can transfer to junior/lower secondary if I change my mind:thumbs:

Well, I too loved Garys performance in Bram Stokers Dracula, as I've said before... He was just too cool.. Part of me loved him (dracula), and part of me hated him... It was a weird feeling being torn over something that is evil, or was he?....;)

Ilmarė
November 29th,2002, 09:44 PM
Ahh... that was the conundrum wasn't it? I mean... we know that there was evil there... but G.O. worked on the Romantic part of the character SO well... that you couldn't help but fall for him. I guess its because we all want that in a way... to find that real Romantic love... but it doesn't exist.. except in films and legend and our imaginations.... *sighs*... would be so nice if it did.

Too true Adun, I have to concur on both parts. Life wouldn't be the same without soul mates. I too have found a male and female counterpart to my soul, though I don't know if they will be the only ones I have in this life time. I believe we will have the opportunity to have many soulmates in this life. As for Romantic love, I believe that it will happen if you accept that anything is possible, even the most cynnical of cynics can receive affirmation to that truth. I am a cynic when it comes to men but I rely on the blind faith that the one guy who doesn't disappoint me is still out there! Perhaps it is a weak hope and I am maintaining an unhealthy attitude about this subject but I have to have my Gilbert Blythe or Laurie (from LWomen)....UNtil otherwise is achieved, I will remain the optomist on romance. :)lol ;)

Your excused, because it's the stupidest show ever but it's hilarious. It was put started by Big Idea Productions, it is all about veggitables who teach kids to do right through funny storys, songs and bible storys. www.bigidea.com (http://www.bigidea.com) might give you an idea how silly it is.

You're not the only one in that dreamworld! I believe that my main soul mate will also be the romantic love of my life - or the 'one'. Thats just what I would like to think is in store for me. I haven't really thought about my having a female soulmate, but I suppose I must do. I know that there are 2 or 3 people who I have met at various times and who have touched my life in more ways than they would know. And to them I am always grateful for being in my life - I suppose they are kind of soulmates:thumbs:

Anyway back to films. Cuba Gooding Jr is great - apparently though he's horrible in real life. Such a shame when people can be good actors, and then ruin it by being not nice people. Russel Crowe another fine example

"Scottishness" ;) It is quite all right if the Veggietales are not to be a part of the film repertoire there. As Ithielnor said, it's a silly cartoon series, mostly Christian based ideals. To teach kids about the bible stories. A friend of mine got me hooked on the sillyness and it's quite catching if you like silly cartoon cucumbers!! Especially ones who sing in Spanish and dance!!! I read in one of the top 10's the title: "The Princess Bride"

I happen to have the soundtrack of this movie even though I didn't see it. (I like Mark Knopfler's music)

Could any one clear me up about the storyline? What's the movie about?

Thank you

Greetings and fare thee well,
Lady Rowena

Have you ever heard of the book? I would recommend it but only after you see the movie. It only roughly follows the book. It's about true love from the Authors point of view. A farm boy falls for a maiden he is employed by and they discover true love. He goes to make himself "worthy" and gets "lost" ;) Well, the rest of the plot is them coming back together and true love conquering all. The beauty of the movie is the actors and the script. Especially Cary Elwes, he's superb as the farm boy Wesley.....I highly recommend it if you're a sucker for love stories...Anyone is welcome to agree or disagree with me.....she needs all the of our opinions here....;)

well rowena, I've never read the book, but I was introduced to the movie by a friend and was hooked immdiately. Main plot is as Linte states it but the strong point of the movie are the hilarious lines, it's packed with them, and the actors are great aswell. I would definately recomend it

absolutely adore the Princess Bride and Cary Elwes as Wesley, perhaps the cutest romance/comedy/action/fantasy piece filmed...if the only one ;)
never read the book tho...

Thanks for letting me into the charms of the princess bride: I'm certainly gonna try to get hold of it.

Neverending story is a great movie. reminds me of when I was young (not that I'm really old now but you know what I mean)

I used to watch it on video with my best friend all the time.
Labyrinth is great too. My mum especially loves sir Didymus (the dog on a dog).

Greetings and fare thee well
