you're not the only one, Tar-Ancalimė. I loved it. come on, how could you not love it? it has heath in it. ;) hehe.
Gowpon, I would give you a summary but I suck at summarizing story lines so I'll leave that to someone who might actually be good at that.

i still haven't seen it so i can't help...but i would love to know what it was actually about.
Tar-Ancalimė
October 13th,2002, 03:44 PM
um ok I'll try to give you a plot guys but im not sure how good itll be.
umm
right so its set in medieval times... with knights and jousting and such
and its about these three squires who's master dies in joust... and this one squire the main character ( :loveyou: ) decides he'll pretend to be the knight and joust in his place. right so he jousts and wins a bunch of money and goes on to lots of tournements in a false noble name and hes really good. he falls in love with this girl but theres this count of france who is courting her as well. and this count and our knight become great enemies and yeah.
its a really great movie and my pathetic plot summary cant even do it justice... especialy as i dont want to give anything away :)
Lynx
October 13th,2002, 04:23 PM
yes, its a very good movie. And that the same problem I have with summaries, I never know how much to tell becaus eI don't want to give it all away.

October 13th,2002, 04:59 PM
I think its alright. The jousting scenes are excellent.

Tar-Ancalimė
October 14th,2002, 08:34 PM
it isn't complicated... :(
just my explanation of it was stupid... never mind, I have a better idea:

October 15th,2002, 09:25 PM
well, in all honesty...talking about ole man Williams is much more instructive than berating A Knights Tale again and again and again. i'm a sucker for arguments, but come now ;)
-and hey...any excuse for a few minutes with Kidman is a good one, even if there is a plethora of sacchrine along with it :naughty:
Catz
October 15th,2002, 10:06 PM

October 20th,2002, 12:29 AM
HEATH LEDGER! Sorry, didn't mean to sound like a hormonal teen there. Honestly, i didn't think there was anything wrong with it. I've seen much worse recently e.g Dungeons and Dragons I think whoever directed it did a pretty good job of adding modern aspects to the film. I see a lot of movies 'cause i rent at least one every week, which means i've sen some pretty cringe worthy, awfully acted and boring films, and to be honest, i didn't think that a Knights Tale was one of them.
Tar-Ancalimė
October 20th,2002, 12:34 AM
ok look Ronin... feel contemptuous of us all you like, just don't make it so obvious, and you've said what you think already, no need to beat it into our heads!
Heath is fine  the acting was wonderful, the plot was good, the ending rocked, and the whole effect was beautiful.

Tar, sorry if that came off a little strong...was only trying to needle some fangirls...success! ;) :gofatty:
personally, why modernize a tale set in the 1300's...that seems to be an oxymoron in and of itself. actually, i LIKED Ledger in A Knight's Tale...loved the Chaucer character...but come on...modern dance music in a medieval ballroom!!!??? that just tanked the movie for me right there.

Didn't modernisation work for Romeo and Juliet though? Sometimes, its quite cool to put a modern spin on an old story, esp. one thats been told countless times in the traditional way, and the storylin eof A Knights Tale has been told many times before. But thats not everyones cup of tea - I thought it was quite refreshing, but each to their own

Ronin
October 25th,2002, 04:32 PM
ok, with this discussion of modernizing a film or even story, thought i'd put my 2 (or 1) cents in. The modernization of Leo's Romeo and Juliet was just that, modernized...taking an old story and placing it into a new setting. however, what was done with A Knight's Tale was modernization in its weakest sense. they did not lift out a tale from one time period and place it into another. they placed 21st century symbolisms, themes, and music (!) into 14th century england! now i'm all for the seamless integration of music, from whatever era to whatever story...but what 21st century mechanism would ever fit into the 1300s. i know they weren't filming a history flick, but come on...we are supposed to suspend belief in movies...watching lords and ladies bump and grind to guitar riffs was probably the most jarring thing i'd seen at the theatre that year. it just doesn't fit. if u want a displacement of mechanisms from one time period to the next...watch a time travel movie lol
*looks up from petting the goat*...but i like the goat!!!! :evilcool:
actually...the modernized Romeo + Juliet did work for me, in certain parts at least. have a great love for Shakespeare's language...just to see the different perspective in another time period, quite interesting.
and teddy, its all good...we're glad to have u!! and don't forget...Gangs of New York AND Catch Me if U Can....this is a brilliant year for movies!
Ilmarė
October 25th,2002, 06:44 PM
I agree with u about the modernised Romeo and Juliet, Ro... the story was kept the same... and they stayed true to Shakespeare's language... whilst using a modern context to set the piece in. Regardless of whether one likes Leonardo Di Caprio or not... that film is responsible for exposing millions of otherwise "bored with W. Shakespeare Esq" teenagers to his work... and from my own experience with those students... it has fostered an interest in.. if not a love of.. his work.... so I think it's praiseworthy for that reason alone. .. Hats off to BL for that!
:elfeek: * sees him petting the goat... hearnoevil *.... umm... ok.... knew you had... unusual tastes... but...*begins to sidle out the door*.... :fanboy: .... hehehehe

i agree completely ilmare....i hate studying shakespeare but the only reason our class is doing R+J for GCSE is cos we got our teacher to promise that we could watch BL's film.

 I too am not a big fan of reading Shakespear, but I did enjoy reading Macbeth. It was just so dark, and I kinda enjoyed that. I was drawn in by it, which helped me enjoy it when I probaboy wouldn't have normally.
Catz
October 25th,2002, 10:27 PM
i do think its a matter of context tho...."willing suspension of disbelief" is , as Ronin said, one of the things a movie aims for, to draw the watcher into its world....glaring anachronisms as pepper *a Knights Tale" are just, and this is only my opinion. too contrived....too artificial for me to do that....every one reminds me that this is artifice.
that isnt a problem with a modernised Shakespearean production....because the thing with those is that the stories Shakespeare tells are applicable to all times, and the fact that the language is an anachronism, does not for me distract from the story, but in fact just serves to underline the fact that people have changed very little from Shakespeares day to now. There was an excellent British TV production, not sure if it was the Beeb or not, but it was "Othello" with Othello played as an Inspector in the police dept.......very good
:catz:
Ronin
October 25th,2002, 10:37 PM
just to comment on Shakespeare, absolutely agree...Shakespeare is so dynamic and pervasive to all time periods, because of its language and not its plots. i think its pretty much agreed, at least for myself, that Shakespeare is not read for his plots...which are, largely unoriginal. yet it is for his use of language...which is...as contrived as this, timeless. mho of course ;)
Tar-Ancalimė
October 25th,2002, 11:41 PM
hey i never said i didnt like shakespeare. as a matter of fact, i love his works... his use of language, as you say, ronin... a few more than others ;)... and R&J is in the category of others, btw...
i just plain didn't like the film. didnt like the actors, didnt like the setting (besides modernization, i just plain didn tlike it) and i thought it was "jarring" (to use someone else's word i dont remember whose) that they were pointing guns at each other and reciting shakepeare... for recite they did
none of this applies to aKT. I liked it for itself, not for any modernization problems or lack thereof...

I agree with you Tar. I liked A Knights Tale based on it. Not the Modernization. Ok, well maybe it has a little to do with Heath. Ok maybe alot, but none the less I though it a very good movie. One I've enjoyed many times.:)

thats it, admit it teddy....its ok...we're here for u ;) lol
actually, i think a lot of it applies to A Knights Tale...but there we go, some of us must be right...and others wrong  (j/k)
and actually, just for R+J....those scenes with the guns (especially at the gas statioin) were my particular favorites, perhaps just for the immense discrepancy between the language and the actions. favorite Baz film btw.

October 26th,2002, 08:24 PM
Hmm.. yeah... again i find i'm agreeing with u Ro:cool: .... I loved the gas station scene... so at odds with the language in some respects... but worked so well. That and the scene outside the cathedral where Juliet is lying... just great pieces.

:) True, true.. I like R&J, but I sometimes found it alittle boring. Not that it wasn't good, just that for me it seemed long. Actually thou my Fave scene is probably the cornyest scene. I loved the pool love stuff "What light through yonder window breaks?". It's the romantic in me.
When he scares her and she screams, that makes me gigglelol .

lol....but all the more reason to argue! ;)
hehe...glad we can agree Tar, it takes people a while to figure out that i'm right :p
well, R+J as a film has its faults...but some of the scenes were just priceless and immaculately done.

I enjoyed a Knights Tale - simply because it wasn't taxing on the mind, it was an easy watch - I don't always want to watch a movie where you have to pay really close attention to whats going on, so you don't get lost on the way, its great not to have to watch a film where you don't think too much - A Knights Tale was just this- plus, of course, it helped that Heath was easy on the eye;)
And the guns in the gas station - that was good - its just an indication of the time the film was set in, with gangs, etc.
Akiba
October 28th,2002, 04:19 AM
I loved the gas station scene wit all the guns and stuff
Enemy of the state gave me that confused feeling Ihad to watch it over and over again before I got it made no sesnse at all
a Knight's tale had none of that mysterious stuff though it was really good even if it had no guns wait was there any hand to hand like fist fights in there I don't remember and think I may be confusing this certain scene with a diif movie so a little help here por favor
Adunauriel
October 28th,2002, 07:12 AM
Akiba, I think maybe you are confused, or maybe I am too. I know there were sword fights in A Knights Tale, but I don't remember and fist fights. There was the cusomery throwing of foodlol , but I don't remember fists.

Well, Ronin that's basicly what I thought. Except for the Running thing. Never would have thought of running. Cause I didn't think there was enought room in a back seat for running.
Yes. Jousting on bikes does sound much more fun. Kind of like the game of Chicken.

You know It's ok if you would swerve. I would to, I'm not crazy. I don't wanna get injured, or worse either.
no actually I'd be worried about my car if it's somebody else's car or an ugly car I wouldn'r swerve but all that would matter would be my precious car yup yes I do value my life greatly

Jousting was great. Nicely done.

I would recommend so you could watch Heath ( i saw the Mtv vma's last night, and he had a close crop - very nice;) )

I prefere him with brown hair, a la 10 Things I Hate About You, but any Heath is good. I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but he has a new film coming out called Four Feathers. Not to mention The Kelly Gang with Orli.
But anyway, as this is the thread for A Knights Tale, not Heath Ledger, i'd better say something on topic. I liked Chaucer. He was funny. I'm suddenly struggling to remember any lines from the film. I did see it about half a year ago though.

The Four Feather was a good movie. Plus, Heath's just plain hot in it.;)

The Four Feather's was decent, Dijmon completely stole the movie tho...he was fantastic in it.
but back to Tale (hehehe...sounds really bad lol)...Chaucer was pretty great, the one true source of comedy throughout the whole thing.

Yes he was, but I love the dude (sadly I've forgotten his name) who always wanted to "Fong" him. And, give him Pain... I just loved him. Espacially at the end. You know what I mean the scene at he end of the credits.lol Funny stuff...roflmao
