View Full Version : Ashes and Tomatoes!

While watching Fellowship this evening, my friend took note of the use of the word "tomatoes" by our illustrious hobbits at Weathertop! They say it very differently, enough so you might not notice the word. Merry was telling Frodo about what they ahd cooked up for a lte-night snack..."Tomatoes and nice, crispy bacon." Then when Frodo was stamping out the fire, Pippin says, "That's nice! Ash in my tomatoes!" You can barely hear it unless you have good hearing or notice these things.
I found this adorable! That's why it's not on my sig. *grin*
Anybody else hear this obscure, yet delightful quote?

I don't know, Tar, I might not have heard it correctly. I can be deaf sometimes. But ti's aweful nice to hear a "brand-new" line! I liked the line! (see my sig!)
I can't believe I never understood the line. And I would porlly never know what it was if my friend hadn't been over and heard it for me! lol

Ok, Tar, it was only "ash", not "ashes" lol (I went and re-watched that clip. lol) But gee, tomatoes must keep good for a long time, unless they got them at Bree in the film. *shrug*

lol...youre a step ahead of me, Ash... I'm not going to get another chance to watch even a piece of the movie 'til, like, Tuesday! mecry
but yeah, it is adorable... and catz, it's the difference in the sound. in threaters, the sound is so huge... and on my little apartment TV, it;s usually drowned out by other noises :(

The first time I saw FOTR I picked up a line that I couldn't understand at that part. The second time I watched it I got it. Pippin said "That's nice. Ash on my tomatoes."

I actually heard it the first time I watched it and it wasn't at the theatres (cause I didn't go to watch it at the movies)and then I put on the subtitles to be sure but I can't remember if it shows up on the subtitles or not

It shows on the subtitles. I didn't notice it until then. I sometimes watch it with the closed captioning on my tv and it picks up on different words than the DVD subtitle function does, so it might be on closed captioning and not the subtitles.

That's too bad. They're very good. I'm sure Hobbits would've loved 'em too... fresh from the vine, sliced thick and with some salt.

I noticed that line also, yet not until I saw FOTR a second time at the cinema.
The first time I heard it, I thought Merry was just yelling indecernable ramblings. :p

I love tomatoes! I like to eat them just like apples and pour some salt as I nibble. It gets a bit messy though. I don't like them cooked though. Raw is better.
