:elfeek: Exactly who's your favorite Character? Of course by my name and signature I love pippin! But what about you?rofl

Fatty
June 24th,2002, 04:34 PM
Well mine is not Fatty Bolger. though I like him too. My favourite character is Theoden. Hey he bursts a horn asunder with a blow, what a guy!

Beregond
June 24th,2002, 04:38 PM
I was going to say Faramir . . . but he's not in the Fellowship . . . Beregond isn't either . . . and neither is Eomer. I guess Boromir. He's not all evil, he just screwed up. And he sort of tried to redeem himself in the end. Also Sean Bean is a cool actor. He was also my favorite character in Goldeneye (The James Bond Movie) He played Alec Trevelyn, 006.

A! Elbereth

lol haha screwed up.... I have to say I am obsessed with Frodo (Elijah Wood) and I'm starting to seriously annoy my family ;) Even the smallest person can change the course of the future :smooch:

AlienFX007

Well, the characters as portrayed in the movie and the book are different (ever so slightly). So I would have to say that I liked Frodo from the movie and Sam from the book.

::sighs::

Ahh, hobbits...they're so adorable and sweet and cute with their curly hair and big blue eyes. And they're brave and loyal and so much better than elves in so many ways...

A! Elbereth
June 24th,2002, 05:20 PM
The Reason Frodo is so great in the movie is becuase OF HIS BIG BABY BLUES! Elijah Wood has the bluest eyes I've ever seen.... did you notice Sam was the only hobbit in the movie without blue eyes? It even says in the book.....

(Yes, I am Queen of the Obvious)

Bonos-Girl
June 24th,2002, 05:37 PM
well...my favourite character in the film is galadriel and in the book it's sam. My favourie actor is orlando bloom (legolas greenleaf -as if you didn't know!!). I love Elijah too, it was him in the trailer that made me think that i HAD to see the film, I was like wow look at his eyes, they're amazing.

A! Elbereth
June 24th,2002, 05:39 PM
*sigh* cries in joy... In the movie when they first showed a close-up of his face I was like:o !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fav character...MERRY TO THE GRAVE! OK, so i know i go on about him but...HE ROCKS!!!!

Second, i agree with fatty...theoden's pretty cool.

Third comes legolas...purely for the orlando bloom thing. We don't really get to see his character in the book do we? :p

THE BUTTERFLY THAT SAVED GANDALF WAS THE BEST!!!!!

No, seriously folks, i'd have to say Boromir. Sean Bean did a REALLY GOOD job playing him and I thought his character came out perfect.

Catz
June 25th,2002, 04:48 AM

There..I fixed it!!!:p

It appears that it was part of a double definate no-no :nono: word! Taking the word Mother to a whole new level!! I assumed that it would treat both words in brackets as one word.

/me drags himself back to the desk after catching himself on the edge of the table as he fell out:p

Thanks Catz, I'd heard that you have a tendancy to inflict injury, but I thought that was limited to the fan boy!! :shhh: Did I say that?

Anyway, next to Sam's loyalty for his friend, I think Merry and Pippin's humour was very well done. Nothing like a burst of laughter in the middle of Elrond's most serious council!! :jester:

Catz
June 25th,2002, 07:29 AM
:o whatever gave you that idea???!!!*catz hides the whip behind her back hurriedly*

Sindarin

My favorite character has to be Arwen.:loveyou:

Pil
June 25th,2002, 08:10 PM
Arwen? Weeel...ok.... C'mon hun, if your gonna fancy someone, fancy the girl with more brains than boobs...ie Eowyn...not some tart who managed to con PJ into letting her ride around for a few minutes!

Soz, i can't stand liv tyler! Arwen the character in the book...well there's not a lot to say about her really is there?!!

P.S. your profile is one of the sexiest on this site... use your sorcery to seduce me... :naughty:

A! Elbereth
June 26th,2002, 12:49 AM
Wow Pil you really let it all out that time

but anyway... I wanna talk about the Hobbits now! I think that what Pippin said at the Council was funnier than he...never mind... but now that i think about it, I dont think there will be too much more of comedy in Lord of the Rings... Things get dead serious in the next movies...I'm sure..

Catz
June 26th,2002, 12:58 AM

C'mon Pil.....the guys entitled to like whoever he wants.......even if it is a bit sad and predictable......;) lol

I can't wait to see Faramir in The Two Towers. I really hope he's as good as Boromir was in the Fellowship of the Ring. Also, I really hope they include Beregond in Return of the King. They'd better not leave him out.

Sindarin
June 26th,2002, 01:36 AM
Okay, I admit it - Eowyn is certainly one of my favorite characters. She possesses intelligence, strength, and beauty.

I agree that I am definately more attracted to her appeal than I once thought.

P.s. So, you think my profile is sexy, Pil?

Why thank you. :smooch:

Pil

Pil
June 27th,2002, 08:45 AM
Ok. no-one is going to claim that bill, a mere pony, is hotter than legolas.... it's just not right! verymad

Is is cute for a PONY though! :)

Bonos-Girl
June 27th,2002, 10:22 AM
what do you mean 'for a PONY'. ponies are soooo cute. Maybe i was exagerating a bit when i said he is cuter than legolas (but not much!!!)

Just a tad hun! I don't see Bill with a 'butt like granite' (from the diaries!)

Bonos-Girl

I don't think any of the characters are into molesting poor, innocent animals. If they were then bill probably wouldn't mind!!!!!

Ah you are in good company there! Welcom eto War of the Ring, hope you have fun!

Fatty
June 29th,2002, 12:23 AM
But I feel I must jump to Arwen's defence. Although I was not too pleased with som eof her antics. I thought Liv did a great job. Arwen is a more attractive character I think than Eowyn. Although Eowyn is strong and weak, loyal and brave, I think Arwen, in the book anyway, has a much more mysterious appeal. What a woman! Suffers eternal separation from her family to be with Aragorn.

I have to admit to being partial to Liv, I liked her accent in the film, her big eyes, her lips are ace (they get much unwarranted critism!).....I could go on.but I won't. Anyway, yes so favourite characters.

In the book, its a tie between Gandalf and Sam.

Pil

Gandalf!!!? Oooook then! I suppose he's like a really important person to the actual story, but i wouldn't go as far as to say that many people could relate to the guy...but, maybe you can you cool wizard you! :)

....ummm...actually the whole history of Gandalf and his Order is fascinating, and mysterious. I like that he appears weak, but actually posesse power and knowledge. He is so instrumental in the fates of all that he comes across...Loved his gruff yet affectionate dialogue with Merry and Pippin in the books. Ooh, there are many more bits, but I'll spare the details

(fellow Gandalf fans, help me out here!!! :))
:) I guess, to many younger folks, its kinda hard to identify/relate with him....:p oh well...different strokes for different folks lol

on a lighter note....I can so glomp Frolijah...... and DomMerry. :naughty: Love the movie hobbits.

MERRY IS THE BEST HOBBIT!!!!! Side with me here, before A! Elbereth gets at you with Frodo! lol

I like the way that Gandalf acted to Pippin and Merry too, so sweet! He's like a strict father that you can't help but love. :)

yeah Tinuviel, i think as you get older you can really start to relate to the sense of responsibility that Gandalf feels towards the other characters...possibly something you dont get so easily when younger....

Oy...i'm a TRUE Frodo fan...it's just i'm not so fan-like as i am towards Merry... I mean, Merry actually did something pretty cool, he helped Eowyn kill the Nazgul guy... all Frodo did was carry a ring about for a bit and then chickened out at the last minute...

I'm SOOOOOO gonna regret posting this!!!! :(

A! Elbereth
July 2nd,2002, 09:25 PM
OH YES YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Merry did a brave thing, but at least Frodo was brave enough to hold it! Not even Gandalf would carry it, and Imagine how terrifying... besides... he saved the world... if it wasnt for his bravery Merry would have most likely died and everyone else including him... or even worse.. someone evil could have gotten it. SO *smiles sweetly* ROAR!!!! ......

While almost all of the actors portrayed their characters very much as I'd always imagined them, I'll say Frodo as my favorite, though it's certainly a toss-up. Elijah portrayed him very well, though they shortchanged Frodo in the film; he should not have been quite so weak and wimpy; he is not really that way; even hurt to the death, he stands up in his stirrups at the Ford, holds up his sword and defies the Nazgul. He's afraid, yes, but is much stronger about it in the book.

I also loved Sean Bean's Boromir, and wished he hadn't died so soon!

Algamesh
July 8th,2002, 03:06 PM
I'm glad you brought that point up! That was my biggest problem with the film ... How did Frodo become basically a supporting actor? I really think they robbed the character of his personality in the script. I think Wood did an excellent job with the lines that were given him but it isn't Frodo as we know him from the literature.

I remember Frodo as being headstrong, valiant, scholarly, and defiant. The cinematic Frodo had little of these qualities ...

Bonos-Girl
July 8th,2002, 03:47 PM
yeh....frodo in the film is all sad and boring compared to the book...mecry mecry

HobbitFriend
July 8th,2002, 07:24 PM
I like Pippin too :) Aragorn is the serious one, Gandalf is the smart one, and the Hobbits are there are the funny ones - there to add some extra excitement......

A! Elbereth
July 9th,2002, 12:22 AM
You are right! Elijah did do a great job! Becuase that was how the script was made... I'm sure if Frodo was like in the book, Elijah would absolutely still be able to portray Frodo even better... I just hope they portray Frodo well when he meets Gollum... I love the part where he's being so... uh..."In control"... even sam was surprised...... I hope they make Frodo a little more interesting then

Pil
July 10th,2002, 08:40 AM
I know i have already said this, but frodo is SOOOOO boring in the film! I mean, come on, GET A PERSONALITY!

A! Elbereth
July 10th,2002, 06:34 PM
This upsets me.... not because I feel Frodo/Elijah is being insulted.. but well, I just feel that they made the character right. In the book they dont describe Frodo's emotions as happy and talkitive during the journey. If this was you, I'm sure you would be a deadbeat too, afraid of every corner you turned. Sam didnt have much of a personality unless frodo was in danger some way and Pippin just didnt know what he was getting into. Pippin and Merry were the ones with the personality yes.... but dont insult Elijah's acting because Frodo turned out boring - insult the one who made the movie that way, because Elijah was just doing his job. And while he was at it - he made Frodo perfect the way Peter Jackson obviously expected him to be.:mmmm:

Pil
July 10th,2002, 07:16 PM
Sorry u misunderstood! I WASN'T insulting Elijah, i thought he did a great job, it was just the frodo that he was required to act i think lacked the bit of personality we are able to see in FOTR. In TTT and ROTK, sure, the ring will become more over powering and if we go by eli's performance the sort of acting required of him will be fantastic! I just think that we should see a little more of the REAL frodo befor he becomes all weird! :p

Nessa
July 11th,2002, 03:56 PM
Not to disagree, Pil, but I think some of the "real" Frodo (who to me is real before he begins the quest) is well represented by his meeting of Gadalf and Bilbo's birthday party (laughing and so on). If by real you mean brave, I know what you mean. But once again I'll say Its the fault of mostly neccasary plot changes. I think his bravery will be seen in TT before he gets all wierded out. To stay on topic, Yes, Frodo is definately my favorate. :)

Bonos-Girl
July 12th,2002, 08:40 AM
i really hope that wasn;'t the *real* frodo....i hope that most of it was ....coz otherwise he is a really bad dancer!!!!

Ronin
July 12th,2002, 05:39 PM
Before topic breaching, Sam is my fave.

other than that, I have to agree with Nessa, in part. I thought we saw a perfect glimpse into the "normal" Frodo...relaxed, thoughtful, happy and at time mischevious. And obviously a guy who knew who to throw down a few, with Sam included. considering his bravery, we've seen perfect shots of it...in the Council of Rivendell for instance, nomatter how blind that bravery may have been. But what we would normal consider brave and courageous, we won't see it from Frodo until early in TTT and late in ROTK because its not at the surface yet...buried deep within him, waiting for the right provocation. i mean, look at Merry and Pippin, the true characters of the fellowship. their bravery seen at the end of ROTK is not that born of "common stock" yet of loyalty and the desire to protect a friend, family. we've got to remember, the bravery within LOTR is not what we see every day...its born from something deeper and more meaningful, friends and family meant a lot to Tolkien and we should take that to mind.

and hey, Frodo danced quite well thank u

Catz

gotta agree with Nessa and Ronin here....i think we got a wonderful view of the "real" Frodo.....just contrast the laughing young man of the first view, with our last view of him in FOTR, and see how much hes changed...and yes, i feel he showed a great deal of bravery....taking on the ring at all was incredibly brave.....unlike the others, he knew a great deal more of what he was getting into, tho obviously not all of it....Merry and Pip were just on a lark, at least at first...and Sam was motivated first out of duty to Frodo, and then by friendship, tho he had only the sketchiest idea of what was actually happening...
and less said about hobbit boogie the better:elfeek: lol
 and just for my nominally on topic justification, leggsy is still my fave....but then everyone else comes a close second ;) lol

so ok, what did everyone think of Orli's performance as Legolas? and lets try to keep it on performance and not looks....tho i cant argue with a certain amount of side drooling ;) lol
Personally i think he did a wonderful job.....Legolas has always been my favourite and Orli just brought him to life....an amazing job...and a difficult one, what with having to be constantly aware of how you are moving, concentrating on keeping your moves fluid and graceful, while at the same time remembering your choreographed moves....a very assured performance from a very young actor.....and i cant resist...those ears are gorgeous :loveyou: lol
:catz:

A! Elbereth
July 22nd,2002, 04:00 AM
yes, though I am reluctant to jump up and down for Orli, but I must say that yes, he did a good job. He made elves look very, i dont know, "elf-like" (if you know what I mean) unlike Haldir...... lol lol He portrayed Legolas just like the book! I like how he glances at Gimli at the very end of FOTR when Aragorn says,"Lets hunt some Orcs!" And Gimli says, "YESSSS!" The glances they give (including Gimli) shows that their friendship is growing

Algamesh
July 22nd,2002, 04:29 PM
Really Nessa? I agree with you on Orlando's performance but I was a bit disappointed by parts of Galadriel's portrayal. Sounded like she was on too much medication at times to me. Oh wait, silly me ... that's just the intoxicating effects of Lothlorien ... my bad ;).

Nessa

lol

I really did like Blanchett, I thik she acted the part very well, a few things hurt her charactor, though. I don't hate the glowing green thing, mostly because it contains dialog from the book, but I'm not fond of it, either. Cate Blanchett is a terrific actess in my opinion, and I think that scene would have worked better if they would just have let her act without all the cgi.

A! Elbereth
July 22nd,2002, 06:27 PM
Yeah, the glowing thing is weird..... but otherwise Cate did a great job! Actually, it wasnt even her fault, it was the director who decided to make her glow green hehe lol

i think Galadriel had to be a bit scary....i mean look at the power of the woman.....shes gonna be scary, just because of that....i liked the performance and the direction......just not overly keen on their choice of effects...and i agree, Cate did a wonderful job...and i think thatll be reinforced when we get to see the whole of the Lorien sequence, since there will then be more of Galadriel as kindly, to balance Galadriel as scary.....
:catz:

Pil
July 23rd,2002, 08:42 AM
Yeah...we kinda get the impression that the fellowship get sent away after the talk and that Frodo doesn't see her again until the mirror incient...where she becomes all scary. I think that any affection showed by Gimili or any others of the fellowship towards Galadriel later on in the film, hasn't been very well backed up. :p

Stormrider
July 24th,2002, 06:49 AM
I have to admit that when I first saw Orlando Bloom as Legolas, I was quite taken with his looks. I think that he is a very good casting choice to portray an Elf. The makeup and hair length and color used really made him look Elfish. His slender build was also a good casting call!

However, my favorite character was Ian McKlellan as Gandalf. He really made Gandalf come to life with his warm, friendly, humorous, and threatening (against Balrog) demeanor, and strong commanding performance.

The second favorite of mine was Elijah Wood. He really looked the way I pictured Frodo to look (even though he is a younger version of what I pictured in the book considering he was 50 years old!) But his acting was very good. I think his expressions and the emotions he portrayed were right on.

Nessa
July 25th,2002, 07:15 PM
If we're talking specifically about character portryal, I think McKellen easily bested Sean Bean. Bean's acting was brilliant, but he had less of a set up carachter to portray, if you understand me.

Pil
July 25th,2002, 07:18 PM
But didn't you think that the way he portrayed the kind of issues that both gondor and himself were going through at the time was brilliant? 'Nothing but a useless heirloom' (?) as he replaces Narsil...it clatters to the ground...he turns around to look into the eyes of aragorn...eyes that may throw down his father...priceless... :loveyou: plus sean beans quite yum!

Nessa
July 25th,2002, 08:52 PM
Yes, his acting was moving and flawless, but the character of Boromir in the book was less spelled out than that of Gandalf, I'm not saying this makes him better or worse than McKellen, just .... different. Don't worry, I rarely make sense. ;)

I always pictured Sam as a more gruff and rugged, gnarly kind of guy. I was surprised to see that the casting team chose Sean Astin for the role. He is much cuter and cuddlier than I had ever pictured Sam.

Sean did convey the concern and love for Frodo that the Sam in the book did; however, I just thought he was not rough-around-the-edges enough from my mind's view of Sam.

A! Elbereth

Frodo and Sam were best of friends, and If you noticed, Elijah and Sean (Billy and Dom. too) Are all wonderful friends now. Its qutie funny lol

I read something Sean said commenting on Elijah. He said once Elijah was standing on an unsturdy chair or summut (not sure what) and sean got worried about Elijah gettin hurt, just like Sam. Its soooo cute.

Gladly! I was wondering if anyone would ask! I like Smeagol coz I can't stand Gollum  I imagine them as two different people, like the bit in the Dead Marshes where he was arguing with his other self. Not only is he essential to the story but I think he's a really fascinating character. When I first found him in the Hobbit, I was scared by him coz I was about 6 years old and my Mum was reading it to me  But even though he was freaky, I really liked him. I feel really sorry for him too, after all - just think what he's been through! Being tortured by Sauron *shudder*...

i would think it will be.....its very important to that character....in fact the struggle between the two sides of himself, you could say, defines Gollums character....and leads to the part that he will play in the Rings destruction....sides, its an excellent scene and really drives home in an overt way, just how torn he is....

I've always been convinced that Smeagol was a good guy before the ring came in. It'll be really fascinating to see what they do with Gollum in TTT. I wonder how many people here have heard the BBC's radio version of LotR that was done aaggeess ago? That was why they chose Ian Holm to play Bilbo, because he was Frodo on the radio. Anyway, their Gollum was BRILLIANT. I was walking around the house for weeks after (I still do now) making hissing noises!

Me and Gollum (Gollum, not Smeagol) go waaay back. I saw the animated versions of both The Hobbit and The Return of the King when I was very young, before I read the books, and Gollum more than terrified me. I think while I read the books the first time those old images kept coming back to haunt me, and it really got in the way of how I felt about the character. I was too scared by him to feel bad for him, you know?

I still don't understand why my brother doesn't like Boromir...:(
He's brave, strong, cute (to his fans, he is :naughty: ), and the most important is---he represents humanity! He let people know that not everyone in the Fellowship is a super hero; everyone has his weakness!
LOTR isn't just an epic with magic and immortals running around killing orcs! It's also a story about friendship and honor! Even though Boromir's weakness makes him do the wrong thing, he was himself at the end...:) And that's what I like about him! :p

When most people prefer Frodo (Elijah Wood) or any of the Hobbits my favvourite would have to be Legolas, even though my name gives it away.

Legolas is soooooooooooo cute and so is Orlando Bloom!!! =)

I like Frodo and Legolas but for their characters not for their looks as I'm a guy (let me just make that clear lol) But even I must admit they really do look the part.

And welcome Legolas Angel. Hope you feel at home

Thank you akiba! Its nice to hear someone appreciating Frodo's will to dance, instead of making fun! :flamer:

My fave in the book is Tom Bombadil however is absent in the film. Why was this? Gollum is also pretty cool.

I find Gollum kinda creepy and I kinda feel sorry for hm and don't ask me why cause I really have no clue

Gowpon

Same here, I feel really sorry for him.
I think it's because the ring changed him and made him become who he is--Gollum. Pretty sad, huh?
And I think that's also why Frodo pity him. It's not a wonder that the little wretched gets himself killed at the end...

My brother asked me to explain why when 'gollum' (which we know is deagol, but MEANT to be smeagol) picks up the ring from the water it is a normal hand, and how it changes into gollum's horrible hand. I tried to explain how the ring changed and tortured his existence into the wretched from he becomes...and i suddenly felt an overwhelming sadness and pity for him. mecry

yeah! Just pause it before he dances and play it slow motion, or step by step, and the girl is flirting while dancing with him, and everyone is in a circle around him clapping

Apparently, the 'chicken dance' is quite popular in Hobbiton pfbbt
