This is the first story I've ever wrote. It's about my RP character, Dawnnamira Artanis Nerwen. It occur's during the War of The Ring. Here's Chapter One. I've written part of Chapter Two as well, but I'll wait for feedback.

Chapter One: A great evil is coming.

There was a disturbance outside the main building. Artanis hastily finished braiding her hair, and looked out the third story window of her room. Elrond was carrying a lifeless body, while Estel, or Aragorn was talking to three short persons. Glorfindel, an elf lord, was walking beside Elrond. Artanis jogged down the stairs, and out the door. When she reached the first floor, greeted Aragorn. “Estel, welcome. We‘ve missed you.” One of the short persons asked Aragorn a question. “Who is she?” Artanis smiled kindly, she knelt down, and answered. “I am Artanis Nerwen.” “Artanis, where is Arwen?” Aragorn asked. Artanis stood up, thought for a moment, and then replied. “Evenstar is in the main hall.” “Thank you. Artanis, this is Sam Gamgee.” He pointed to the largest of the group. Artanis bowed slightly, and Sam bowed back. “Hello Artanis.” “And this is Merry Brandybuck,” Aragorn pointed to the second tallest in the group, “Welcome to Rivendell, Master Brandybuck.” Artanis smiled warmly, and Merry blushed. “And this is Pippin Took.” Aragorn pointed to the last in the group. “A star shines upon the our of our meeting, Master Pippin.” Pippin blushed as well. Artanis smiled, “Aragorn, what are they?” Artanis whispered, she had never seen people this short before. Aragorn smiled, and then answered her query. “They are hobbits Artanis. Halflings.”

Elrond called out an upstairs window. “Artanis, I need your assistance.” Artanis turned toward the window, and nodded her head. “I’ll be there right away.” She turned back to Aragorn and the halflings. “Forgive me, The Lord Elrond needs my help.” Artanis jogged into the building, leaving the halflings, and Aragorn outside. She ran up the stairs, and into the healing room. Elrond was attentively studying another halfling. Artanis nodded to Glorfindel, and went to Elrond’s side. “You called?” Elrond nodded. “This halfling is severely hurt. Boil some water, and get me some bandages.” Artanis nodded, and dashed off to the kitchen on the main floor. “Elrond needs hot water. Now!” Artanis said, running through the kitchen, “I’ll be back for it soon.” She ran to a closet, and grabbed some absorbent cloths from a pile. She also grabbed some healing herbs, and a very sharp medical knife. She put the supplies in her pack, and dashed back into the kitchen. The water was just beginning to boil. She waited another minute, poured the water into a heatproof container, and ran up the stairs with care. She walked into the healing room, and set the container on a table near Elrond. She pulled the supplies from her pack, and arranged them in the order Elrond had trained her to arrange them. Elrond sighed softly, “This is bad, very bad.” Artanis went pale, when Elrond said it was bad, it was bad. “What happened?” She asked Glorfindel. He turned to her. “We’d best go, and leave Elrond to concentrate.” Artanis turned to Elrond. “I’ll be in the hall, if you need anything else.” She told him. He nodded, still intently studying the halfling’s wound. Glorfindel moved out of the room, Artanis followed him.

Once they were in the hall, Glorfindel began the tale. “You know I left Imladris a few weeks ago.” “You left to look for someone. But you never told us who.” Glorfindel nodded. “I went to look for The Ringbearer.” Artanis looked disturbed, “The bearer of The Ring?” Glorfindel nodded. “I found them in the wild, Estel told me of what had happened. They were attacked by Ringwraiths at Amon Sul.” Artanis nodded, the Ringwraiths, as well as Amon Sul were well known by her. She had never met a Ringwraith, but they were known of in Imladris. “The Ringbearer, a halfling named Frodo Baggins, was stabbed by a Morgul blade.” Artanis gasped, “Where?” She asked worriedly. “His shoulder.” Glorfindel replied. Artanis looked somewhat relieved. “We came here as fast as we could, but Frodo was fading all the time. When we got to the Fords, the Ringwraiths caught up with us. We battled them, and Frodo almost gave in.” Artanis leaned back against the wall. “Then what?” “Well, he got over the Fords on my horse. I washed the Ringwraiths away with a flood of water, thus releasing us of that threat, temporarily.” Artanis nodded, “You cannot kill something that is undead.” Glorfindel continued. “We came to the main hall, and, well, you know what happened after that.” “Go rest now Glorfindel. I will come awake you if you’re needed.” Glorfindel looked at Artanis gratefully. “Thank you.” Artanis bowed. “You’re welcome. Now, go.” Artanis gently pushed Glorfindel in the direction of his room.

She watched him walk tiredly to his room, and then turned back to the room. She knocked softly on the doorjamb. “Come in.” Elrond said, not turning toward the door. “How is he?” Artanis asked, as she walked across the room. “The worst is over, he should be fine now.” Elrond stated, wiping his hands on an already blood soaked cloth. Artanis stared at the halfling, then turned to Elrond. “How long will he be asleep?” Elrond shrugged his shoulders. “Anywhere from a hour, to three days.” Artanis nodded. She walked to the window, and saw the halfling, Sam watching a fountain. Elrond walked over to her side. He put his arm around her shoulder. “I know you are young, Artanis. Yet you possess a wisdom that goes beyond your years.” Artanis smiled sadly. “Going through what I went through I went through would wizen anyone.” She said sadly. Elrond nodded. “Go to the halflings, make them feel at home. It might do you some good. They’re a merry people.” Elrond said. Artanis nodded. “I will.” She turned to go. “Elrond?” “Yes, Artanis?” “I feel a vast shadow. Something foul is about to happen.” Elrond walked across the room. He put his hand on her shoulder. “You are one blessed by Galadriel, You have a perceptive mind.” Artanis turned to him, a questioning look on her face. “You’ll find out what I mean, Artanis. You will.” [I]Artanis turned, and walked out of the room.

Well, I was referring to the fact that her father was a mortal, and he was killed by a pet dog of his when she was about fifty years old. At about the same time, her mother left for the Undying Lands with Celebrían. Dawn was left in the care of Elrond and Arwen.

Artanis walked out of the main hall. Merry and Pippin ran over to her. “Artanis, Is Frodo going to be alright?” Pippin asked, a look of concern upon his face. Artanis knelt, and looked him in the eyes. “Elrond says he’ll be fine.” Merry almost yelled for joy. Pippin hugged Artanis around her neck. “Now, I must tell Sam.” Artanis said, looking at the forlorn halfling. She stood, and Merry nodded. Pippin and Merry both grabbed one of Artanis’ hands, and together they walked to Sam. Artanis knelt in front of Sam, and looked him in the eyes. Sam turned away. “Little halfling, what’s wrong?” Artanis asked gently. “Master Frodo’s gonna die. That’s what.” Sam said, a tear running down his face. Artanis had a look of surprise on her face. This halfling was genuinely concerned for his master. She gently cupped Sam’s face in her hands. “Frodo is not going to die.” She said resolutely. “Elrond has treated him, and Frodo will survive.” Sam looked at Artanis with disbelief. “You’re not serious.” He said sadly. “Master Frodo is gonna die.” “No he’s not Sam. When I think of Frodo, I sense a much longer life. He will not die now.” Sam looked at Artanis with a slight hint of hope showing on his face. “Can, Can I see him?” Sam asked, nervously. Artanis looked at him intently. “Could you handle it? He’s been in a great amount of pain.” Sam thought for a moment. “I could. I want to see Master Frodo.” Artanis nodded. “Come.” She said, holding out her hand. Sam stood up, and grasped it. Artanis looked at the halfling beside her, and smiled. “When I look at you, I sense a great loyalty. You are a faithful servant.” Sam beamed, Merry and Pippin looked at each other. “When can we eat?” Pippin asked. Artanis turned to Pippin. “You may go to the kitchen, and tell them I said to feed you.” Pippin jumped up like a dog invited for a walk. “Thank you.” Merry said. Then they ran off. Artanis looked at Sam. “Ready?” Sam nodded solemnly.

Sorry i have been away and i have missed this when it was first posted, but i would like to say that this is lovely. It fills us in on a part of the book that had been left unshown and its all very believeable...inkeeping with the reality of the situation and the personalities of each character. We can see where their loyalties and loves lie...a subtle look of friendship between merry and pippin...i liked that bit...i also admired your use of glorfindel...it reminds us of the important part he had to play in the flight to the ford...V. good all round and i look forward to exploring the character further and seeing how her fate links with that of the fellowship perhaps (?). Keep it up! :thumbs: :read: veryhappy

I know...it's very good though...she mentions how it might be hard for him to see frodo like that because he is in so much pain...and i just thought, when sam persisted, this is why they were such good friends and he kept by frodo even when all hope had been lost...this is the hobbit that got his master through fire and ash, capture and torture...and here is where it all begins... :cuddles: :(

They walked into the main hall. Sam looked around in wonder, the light green floors, and the skylights in the ceiling. “What is this?” He asked. Artanis reflected for a moment. “This is our main building. Most of us live here.” Sam looked around, staring at the elves walking through the massive hall. “Where’s Master Frodo?” He asked after a few seconds. “Patience isn’t one of your virtues, is it?” Sam looked at Artanis, shaking his head. <Well, at least he’s honest. > She thought to herself. “Frodo is in the healing room, but he will be moved to a recovery room soon.” Sam nodded, as if he hadn’t heard a thing she had said. “Come this way, Sam.” Sam looked at the stairway with uneasiness in his face. “Master Frodo is on the second floor?” He asked, glancing at the stairs. “Do you want me to carry you there?” Artanis asked. Sam shook his head, determined not to let this elf see his fear. “No, I can walk, Dawnnamira.” Artanis looked at him, surprise on her face. “What did you say?” She asked. “You look like a Dawnnamira should. I think it fits you.” Artanis shook her head in amusement. “You may call me that, if you wish.” She said, Sam looked at her gratefully. “I’d like to, if I can.” Artanis smiled at him. “I just said you could.” Sam nodded, “I forgot, Dawnnamira.” Artanis thought for a moment. “Why don’t you call me ‘Dawn’? I think it sounds better.” Sam thought for a moment. “Dawn. Dawn. Yes, I think ‘Dawn’ fits you better.” Artanis grinned, “Now, let’s go see Frodo.” Sam nodded, and charged up the stairs. Halfway up he tripped, and rolled down three stairs. “Careful Sam.” Sam nodded. “Maybe you could carry me up?” He asked bashfully. Artanis knelt, “Hop onto my back.” Sam did so. Artanis rearranged him a little, and then headed up the stairs.

They reached the healing room, Sam tapped Artanis’ shoulder. “Can you let me down now?” He asked. Artanis knelt, and he slid off her back. “There he is.” She said to Sam. “Dawn, it’s too tall for me. I can’t see over the top.” Artanis smiled, and pulled a chair over. “Here, climb on this.” Sam awkwardly climbed into the chair.

He almost immediately gasped. “Sam, Are you okay?” Sam didn’t answer. Frodo had a smudge of blood on his face. Yet he seemed to be sleeping very peacefully. “How long will Master Frodo be asleep?” Sam asked quietly, as if he were afraid to wake Frodo up. “Elrond says anywhere from a few more minutes, to three days.” Sam looked disappointed. “I’m ready to go now.” He said. Artanis picked him up off the chair. “Are you hungry Sam?” She asked, Sam looked at her in disbelief. <This elf obviously has no knowledge of hobbits.> He thought. “Yes. I am.” He told her. She held out her hand, and said. “Then come, let’s go get you something to eat.”

The halflings were eating a simple meal. They were eating just about anything set in front of them, while Artanis looked on with cheerful amusement. “You know that supper is in two hours, don’t you?” She asked. Merry nodded, spilling the fluid he was drinking down his front. Artanis laughed at the expression on his face. Pippin shook his head sadly, while Sam merely went on eating. “When you are finished eating, I will take you to your rooms.” Sam looked at her. She answered softly, “Your rooms are on the first floor Sam.” Sam thought for a moment, “I’d rather be close to Master Frodo, if you please.” he said hesitantly. Artanis looked at him in shock. “Why?” Sam thought some more, a considering look on his face. “I’d like to take care of him, if I may.” She thought for a moment. “I’ll see what I can do.” Sam nodded appreciatively.

The halfling’s finished their ‘snack’, as Merry called it, washed their hands, and stood up. Artanis stood up as well, and Pippin grasped her left hand, while Sam held her right. Merry stood in front of them. They began walking north, and reached three small rooms, “These are the rooms I prepared for you. However, if you all wish, as Sam does, you may sleep on the floor in my room.” Merry and Pippin thought for a moment. “May we sleep in both?” Pippin asked timidly. Artanis looked confused. “What?” Merry laughed quietly. “What Pip meant, is could we sleep one night in your room, and one night down here?” Pippin nodded, “That’s exactly what I meant.” He said quickly. Sam burst out loudly. “I’m sleeping in your room all the nights.” Artanis nodded, “I’ll see what I can do. You three stay here, don’t go wandering off. I’ll need to tell you what Elrond’s answer is.” They nodded, and Artanis turned to go.

Dawn's room is connected to the recovery room Frodo is in. It's because she's Elrond's healing assisstant, so he put her in that room so she could tend the patients staying in that recovery room. Make sense?

Artanis found Elrond talking with his council. She listened to a group of elves recite a poem. Then she heard Elrond say, “We’ll finish this discussion later.” The council dispersed quickly. “Elrond, I need to talk to you.” She said loud enough for him to hear, and him only. “What is it Art?” He asked tenderly, calling her by a nick name of hers. “Nothing major, just a matter concerning the halflings.” Elrond looked at her with interest. “What's wrong? Don’t they like their room?” Artanis sighed, “No, nothing’s wrong with their room. Sam wishes to sleep on my floor.” “Whatever for?” Elrond asked, Artanis replied. “He’s wants to be able to help me care for Frodo.” Elrond nodded. “What about Merry and Pippin?” “They want to sleep in my room every other night, sleeping in the room we prepared for them on the opposing nights.” Elrond nodded. “Very well. They may.” “Thank you.” Artanis said, grateful that he had agreed to the plan. “Is there anyone else that wishes to sleep in your room?” Elrond asked, a playful tone in his voice. “No, none that I know of.” She answered truthfully.

I have browsed over this one a few times, but I thought I'd sit down and actually give it a read this morning and I'm glad I did!

It's a very entertaining story that is full of emotion. The part where she convinced Sam that Frodo isn't going to die brought a tear to my eye, and the several parts made me smile and chuckle.

Artanis walked swiftly to the halflings room. She knocked on the door gently, and then walked in. Merry, Pippin, and Sam eagerly looked at her. “What did he say?” Merry and Pippin asked at the same time. Artanis decided to pull a prank. She didn’t answer. Sam looked at her worriedly. “Did he say no?” He asked nervously. She answered with a sad tone. “Elrond said yes.” The halflings stared in amazement, “He said no?” Pippin asked, Sam hung his head. Artanis laughed. “Weren’t you listening? He said yes!” Merry laughed for joy. “YES!” Pippin shouted, while Sam slid off the bed, and hugged Artanis. “Now, I must show you my room, so you can decide where you’ll sleep.” Merry and Pippin slid off the bed as well, and they all merrily trotted toward the stairs.

The halflings didn’t look the happiest at the prospect of climbing two sets of stairs, but Artanis came up with an alternative plan. “If you all want, I could carry you up the stairs one at a time. I wouldn’t mind it.” Merry, Pippin and Sam consulted for a while, and then Merry answered. “We’d agree to that, but we don’t want you to get to tired…” “You still have to tend Frodo.” Sam burst in. Artanis smiled, “Very well, I will find two of my friends, and we’ll carry you up all together.” The hobbits nodded, that was what they had planned. “You stay here at the stairs, a few of my friends are right of there.” She pointed to a group of elves sitting in a group, listening to Evenstar tell a tale. “I’ll go get them, and come right back.” Merry nodded. “We’ll be right here.” Artanis nodded, and walked toward the group.

She walked quietly to the group, and whispered to two young elves. One a graceful female, Quantamelmë, with a bright smile, and a taste for pranks, and the other, a young male, full of life, Quantacuilo. Quantacuilo was usually the one that got Artanis and Quantamelmë out of trouble, when they got in it. “Më, Lo, I need your help.” She said quietly to the two elves. They nodded, and discretely walked away with Artanis. “What is it Art?” Quantacuilo asked, “Yes, what do you need?” Quantamelmë asked worriedly. “I need you to help me.” Quantacuilo snickered. “You said that.” Artanis playfully punched him, “I know. You both know about the halflings, right?” They both nodded, “What about them?” Quantamelmë asked, Artanis answered. “I need you all to help me carry them to my room.” Quantacuilo looked at Artanis. “Why? Aren’t they sleeping in the room you prepared for them?” Artanis shook her head. “Well, the two youngest, Merry and Pippin, will alternate. One night in my room, and one in the guest room.” Quantamelmë nodded, “What about Sam?” “Sam will sleep in my room all the nights.” “We’ll help you.” Quantacuilo said. “The halfling’s are waiting at the stairs.”

Artanis’ friends nodded, and together they all walked over to the stairway. When the halflings saw Quantacuilo and Quantamelmë they whispered to Artanis, “Who are they?” Artanis smiled, and answered. “This is Quantamelmë. You may call her ‘Më’, most of us do.” She said, pointing to the beautiful elf maiden. The halflings bowed, and Quantamelmë bowed back. “And this is Quantacuilo. Most of us call him ‘Lo’.” Artanis ended, pointing to the lively young he-elf. The halflings felt a little safer with Quantacuilo, and they shook his hand, though they could barely reach it. “Now, let’s get you to my room.” Artanis said. “Very well Art, which one shall I carry?” Quantacuilo asked. “Lo, you carry Pippin, while Më carries Merry. I’ll take Sam.” Quantacuilo and Quantamelmë nodded, and knelt. “Hop onto my back.” They both said at the exact same time. Merry and Pippin laughed, then did so. Quantacuilo and Quantamelmë stood, while Artanis knelt. Sam hopped onto her back, and Artanis stood. “Come.” She said. The three elves began walking up the stairs, at a moderate pace. When they reached the second floor, Artanis noticed a stretcher being carried to the third floor. “They’re moving Frodo.” She said quietly to Sam. She caught up with the stretcher. “Please, be careful while moving him, Lindir.” She said to one of the elves carrying the stretcher.

The elf nodded, and Quantacuilo and Quantamelmë caught up with them. “Are they moving him?” Më asked. “No, they‘re moving the treasury.” Lo said, shaking his head, an annoyed look on his face. “It’s not like there’s something else we could do. This is the only way to the third floor.” Artanis looked at him, an annoyed look in her brown eyes. “Both of you calm down. I need to supervise them moving him anyways. We’ll follow them.” Artanis said quietly, moving up the stairs slowly. The elves carrying Frodo were holding him level, the top elves holding their side low, the back elves holding their end level with the front. That way Frodo wasn’t disturbed much.

We’re almost there.” Sam looked at her, “Do your eyes always do that?” He asked, Lo laughed. “Do what?” Artanis asked. “Change colors like that.” Sam supplied, Artanis smiled, her eyes changing to silver. “They always have, since I was born.” Sam nodded, and Pippin nodded as well. “I was wondering about that.” Pippin said quietly, Merry looked at him over Më‘s shoulder. “No you weren’t. You were busy wondering when we were going to eat.” Pippin looked indignant. “How did you know that?” Sam laughed, and then said. “That’s all you think about Pip. You’re almost as bad as Fatty.” Pippin sighed loudly. “I get no respect.” He threw up his hands, and almost fell off Lo’s back, causing Sam and Merry to laugh more. Më and Artanis looked at each other, and Artanis spoke. “Here we are.” The halflings hadn’t noticed that they had reached a doorway. It was a wood door, painted a dark green.

Artanis opened the door, revealing a medium-sized room. It was painted a medium green, and the bed was clothed in blue and brown. It was carpeted with a thick carpet, which was patterned in brown and green squares. The closet door was hidden behind a wall hanging depicting Cerin Amroth. The window opened to a beautiful view of waterfalls and the courtyard. There was a wood desk in one corner, covered with sketches and drawings, and a blue chair in another. There was an open door opposite the bed, which connected to where Frodo was still sleeping. Artanis, Më and Lo dropped the halflings onto Artanis’ bed, and Artanis went to check on Frodo, while the halflings fought over where they would sleep. Më left the room, and Lo sat down.

Artanis walked into the recovery room to find Elrond bent over Frodo. She walked quietly to his side, and spoke. “I should have asked this earlier. Did you retrieve the splinter?” Elrond shook his head, “No, and we’ll have to keep looking for it.” Artanis sighed. “Why did you move him here then?” Elrond shrugged his shoulders. “I thought it would be best.” Artanis nodded, then turned back to her room. “Art.” Elrond said. She turned back to him. “Yes?” “Don’t worry, we’ll find it.” She nodded, and left the room.

When she returned to her room, the halflings had agreed about sleeping spaces. They would all sleep on the floor, at the foot of Artanis’ bed. Artanis agreed. “That’s good. Now, I’ll show you Rivendell.” Sam looked worried. “What about Master Frodo?” Artanis knelt, “Elrond is with him now, he’ll take care of Frodo.” Sam looked relieved. Merry and Pippin moved toward the door, while Sam walked with Artanis. Lo stood, and walked behind them, watching Artanis carefully. They reached the stairs, and the halflings paused. “Do you want me to go get Më?” Artanis asked them. Sam shook his head. Merry shrugged his shoulders. “If we’re going to be here for a while, we might as well start doing it ourselves.” Pippin said resolutely. “Very well.” Artanis said, her eyes a dark gray.

===========================================

Walking down the stairs was an eventful project, Merry fell down twice, Pippin once, and Sam didn’t fall down. When they reached the bottom, Merry dusted himself off, hitting Pippin in the process. “You did that on purpose.” Pippin said angrily, while Merry tried to figure out what he had done. “I don’t know what you mean Pip.” Pippin pushed Merry. “You hit me.” “I did not, but I will now, Because you pushed me.” Sam got in between them, and pushed them apart. “Both of you cut it out. Would you fight in front of them?” Merry and Pippin shamefully hung their heads, while Artanis laughed along with Lo and Më, who had joined them on the second floor.

“Now, come.” Artanis said to them, walking towards the main door. The halflings ran to catch up with her. “Where are we going?” Merry asked. “Are we going to be back for supper?” Pippin asked worriedly. “First question first. I’m going to take you along the main path, and show you around Rivendell. Second question. We will be back for supper.” Artanis said, her eyes a bright, clear blue, her cloak lightly flapping in the brisk breeze. Lo turned back inside. “I’ll see you at supper.” He called. Artanis waved over her shoulder. Më waved as well.

Chapter Four: Legolas Arrives

They had just made their way back from the walk. There was still thirty-five minutes till supper, so they sat at the fountain, and talked. Mainly the halflings asked Artanis and Më questions. “How old are you, Dawn?” Pippin asked, Merry elbowed him in the side. “Ouch, that hurt.” Pippin complained, Merry replied. “Never ask a lady how old she is.” Artanis smiled. “To answer your question Pippin. I am 551 years old. I celebrate my birthday on September 21st.” Sam looked up from the tan dirt he had been drawing in. “Really?” Pippin asked, Sam looked thoughtful. “September 22nd is Master Frodo’s birthday.” He said. Artanis looked interested.

She jogged toward the kitchen entrance at the side of the building. She pushed the door open, and glanced around. Spying the person she was looking for she walked in. “Prince Legolas has just arrived, his band numbers ten, as well as him.” The cook nodded, and then gently pushed Artanis out of the kitchen, while the hobbits followed, bewildered. She straightened her clothing, and made her way into the dining hall. Elrond was just sitting down, and Artanis walked quickly to her seat near Lo. She sat down, while the hobbits climbed into the three chairs next to her. “Forgive me, Lord.” Artanis said quietly. “Prince Legolas just arrived.” Elrond nodded, and Lo passed her the plate of venison. She took a small piece, and passed it on to Sam, who was sitting next to her.

The Prince and his company walked in, and came over to the table. “May I sit?” He asked Elrond. Elrond smiled. “Welcome Legolas, please, do sit.” Legolas smiled, and sat down at an empty seat across from Artanis. He accepted the goblet of juice offered him, and took a piece of the venison. Artanis took a bite of her venison, and thought about the deer it came from. She had killed it while out on a hike by herself, and she wasn‘t really prepared for a hunt. As the only female hunter in Imladris, the male hunters often looked down upon her. But she was one of the most skilled trackers in the group, and she provided much meat for Imladris. Legolas interrupted her thoughts. “Elrond, have you seen Mithrandir recently? I have some news for him.” “Yes, He‘s been here for three days.” Artanis took another bite of venison. She looked at the hobbits, they weren’t eating. She whispered to Sam. “Why aren’t you all eating?” “We‘re not hungry.” Artanis shook her head, then sat up straight, “May we be excused?” She asked Elrond. “Who is the ‘we’?” He asked. “The halflings and I.” She replied, he nodded. “You’re excused.”

They stood up, and walked from the hall. When they reached the fountain, Artanis sat on the edge of the fountain, and the hobbits sat at her feet by choice. "Who’s Mithrandir, Artanis?" She thought for a moment, and then replied. "Mithrandir is an Istari. A wizard. I suppose most call him ‘Gandalf’." Pippin inhaled sharply. "Gandalf is here?" Merry asked worriedly. Artanis nodded, "Yes, he’s here." Merry and Pippin looked at each other apprehensively. Sam laid back, and watched the light pink and purple clouds scuttle by. It was growing dark, and Pippin was yawning occasionally. Artanis looked into a window, and saw a lit candle. "It’s time to go in now." She said. Pippin nodded sleepily, and Merry pulled him into a standing position with Sam’s help. Artanis grasped Pippin’s hand, and they walked into the building.

-----------------------------
When they reached her room, they found three ‘beds’ on the floor at the foot of her bed. Sam chose the one next to her bed, Merry chose the middle, and Pippin got the end one. The hobbits all got under the covers, and Artanis blew out the candle in her room. She lay down on her bed, and waited until she heard Sam snoring. She quietly got out of bed, and went to check on Frodo.

When she entered the room, she found Elrond bent over Frodo, and Mithrandir sitting in the window seat. "Have you found it yet?" She whispered, Elrond shook his head, "No, I haven’t. And I’m starting to get worried." Artanis looked at Mithrandir, who was smoking his pipe, the light from it illuminating his face eerily. "Greetings Mithrandir." She whispered. He nodded, and Elrond sighed quietly. "I can’t find it." Artanis went to his side. "We must find it. We must." Elrond whispered resolutely. Artanis nodded, her face illuminated by the pale moonlight. "All things come with time, though I know we don’t have much of that." She whispered. Mithrandir nodded from his window seat. "We will not stop until we find it." He said. Elrond cleaned his hands in a basin of water. "The halflings sleep in your room?" Elrond asked her quietly. "Yes, they are asleep." Elrond nodded, "That’s good. Hopefully they’ll sleep all night." Artanis agreed. "Yes, I hope so." She said. Elrond nodded, and placed his medical instruments in a richly carved cabinet. "Go back to bed now, Art. Mithrandir will watch Frodo." Elrond instructed her. She nodded, "Good night then, to both of you." She turned, and returned to her room.

She walked to her window, and looked at the stars in the sky. They twinkled merrily, and Artanis drew strength from their light. She breathed quietly, yet deeply. She closed the curtains, and walked to the side of her bed. She pulled back the light cover, and lay down. She turned onto her side, and watched the shadows from the moon play on her wall until she fell asleep.

Chapter Five: Old Friends

Artanis woke at dawn, as was her habit. The hobbits slept, but Sam had apparently snoring. She quickly slipped into a clean outfit, consisting of comfortable, loose fitting brown cloth pants, and a loose-fitting green shirt. She pulled on her boots, combed her black hair, and then French-braided it, as she always did. She then walked into the recovery room where Frodo was, and found that Mithrandir was still there.

"How is he?" She asked him, as he watched Frodo for a moment. "He talks in his sleep." Mithrandir replied, smiling. Artanis smiled as well, "Merry did last night as well." Mithrandir smiled sadly. "Did you sleep last night?" Artanis nodded, "Yes, I slept." She didn't say how much, but Mithrandir knew. She stood at the foot of the bed that Frodo was laying in. Her eyes turned dark gray, almost black. "It will destroy him, won't it?" She asked Mithrandir, a hint of worry in her voice. "It could destroy them all." He answered, emphasizing could.

The story has progressed so much since i last read it, Gandalf and Legolas have come, more development with the feelings surrounding Frodo's condition...:thumbs:....all really great!

I especially liked...from page seven i believe...

"Pippin nodded sleepily, and Merry pulled him into a standing position with Sam’s help. Artanis grasped Pippin’s hand, and they walked into the building."

Just a small detail of Pippin being the sleepiest and Art taking him by the hand and not the others, it reminds us that he is the youngest hobbit....so sweet...that was a really nice touch Dawn. :p

===========================
Artanis sighed, thinking of possible destruction. "What can we do?" She asked, Mithrandir was silent for a moment. "I don't know Artanis. It all hinges on Frodo." She walked to the connecting door, and watched the hobbits sleep. She turned back to watch Frodo, who had begun to murmur in his sleep. She walked to his side, and knelt next to the bed. Frodo was muttering about the attack of the Barrow-wights. Artanis looked at Mithrandir with pity for Frodo on her face. "He's been through so much. They all have." Mithrandir nodded, and turned toward the window. "Many evil things have happened Artanis, and many more will."

Artanis heard a noise from her room. She nodded goodbye to Mithrandir, and quickly walked into her room. Sam was trying to look out the window, and Merry was shaking Pippin awake. "Good morning." She said cheerfully, "Did you sleep well last night?" She asked them. Sam nodded, and Merry kept trying to awake Pippin. He gave up. "I don't care if he wakes up or not." Artanis smiled at Merry, knelt, and shook Pippin herself. He almost instantaneously responded. "Yes?" He said sleepily. "Am I late for breakfast?" He asked worriedly. Sam laughed from the window. Merry hopped into the chair, and Artanis smiled at Pippin. "No, breakfast isn't for another hour. However, I thought you might like to see Frodo." She said, looking at both Merry and Pippin while speaking. Merry jumped off the chair. "Can we?" Pippin asked, kicking his covers off. "Yes, if you wish." "Of course we want to! Can we see him now?" Merry asked impatiently. Artanis nodded, and walked into the recovery room. Sam walked along behind them.

She signaled to Mithrandir, telling him the hobbits were coming in, although he had heard the conversation. He nodded, and Artanis gestured to the hobbits. "Come in." She said. They nodded, and walked into the room. The first thing they saw was Mithrandir, and Pippin nearly ran from the room. Mithrandir smiled at their reaction to his presence. "Greetings Meriadoc, Peregrin, and Samwise." He said quietly. They nodded very quickly, and Artanis pulled two chairs over to the bed. "Climb on these."

Merry was the first up, and he almost fell off his chair when he saw Frodo. Pippin got on the chair, and then sat on the edge of the bed. Pippin looked as if he was going to throw up, Artanis went to his side, and took his hand. "He'll be fine. Elrond, Mithrandir, Bilbo, and I are taking care of him." At the mention of Bilbo, Merry's head jerked up. "Bilbo is here?" Pippin asked. Artanis nodded, and Mithrandir smiled from the window seat. "Yes, Bilbo is here." He said.

Chapter Six: A matter of Questions.

There was a gentle knock at the door of Artanis' room. "Excuse me." She said, leaving Merry and Pippin with Mithrandir. When she opened the door, Lo was standing in front of the door. Artanis stepped aside, and Lo walked in. "Who are you here to see?" She asked him. He looked at her. "Elrond wishes to see you and the halflings." Artanis nodded, "I'll get them. Where was he?" Lo followed her as she walked to Frodo's room. "He was in the Hall of Fire." Artanis nodded again. "Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Elrond wants to see us." Merry and Pippin slid off their chairs. "Do any of you want to change clothes? I have to ask Mithrandir for a full report about how Frodo was last night. Your packs are in my room." Artanis told them. The hobbits turned toward her room, while she walked to Mithrandir.

Never a patient one, are you teddy? Here is some more!
====================================

When she walked to Mithrandir's side, he was watching a group of male Elves prepare to leave on a hunt. Artanis watched for a moment, and then spoke. 'Mithrandir?' He turned from the window. 'Why aren't you going with them Nerwen?' Artanis smiled at his use of her other name. 'Elrond wished me not to go on this one. He said I would be needed here.' 'Elrond is a wise Elf.' Artanis nodded in agreement. 'That he is.'

Sam walked into the room. 'Dawn, we're ready.' 'Very well Sam. Give me a moment.' Sam nodded, and walked back into her room. Artanis spoke again, 'Mithrandir, what is going to happen?' Mithrandir sighed. 'Only the wisest can tell, and there are many questionable things. Now, go. I'll watch Frodo, and if you see Bilbo, tell him to come up.' Artanis nodded, and walked to her room.

'Are you all ready?' She asked the hobbits. They all nodded, and she walked to her door. The hobbits followed, and Lo did as well. When she opened her door, Bilbo was standing in front of it, one hand up, as if he were about to knock. Artanis stepped aside, and the hobbits gasped. 'Bilbo!' Merry cried. Artanis knelt. 'Greetings Master Bilbo. Mithrandir wishes to see you.' She nodded in the direction of the recovery room. 'He's in there, with Frodo.' Bilbo nodded. Artanis stood, and Bilbo walked past her.

After Bilbo had disappeared into the recovery room, Artanis walked out of her room. The hobbits followed, though they wanted to stay with Bilbo, even if he was with Mithrandir. When Artanis reached the stairs, she motioned for the hobbits to go in front of her. They started down the stairs. Artanis followed, and the walk down the stairs passed without incident.

================================
When they reached the main floor, Artanis turned down a corridor the hobbits hadn't noticed the day before. She walked for a while, and then turned into a great hall. There was a fire burning opposite the door, and there were many graceful columns reaching to the high ceiling. Elrond was at the head of one of the many tables, and Aragorn, Elladan, Elrohir, and many of his council were sitting at various places around the table. Artanis bowed gracefully at the end of the table, and the hobbits bowed as well.

Elrond motioned for Artanis to sit at the empty seat at his side, while the hobbits were at the end of the table. 'You have been called here for a purpose.' Elrond said. The hobbits looked at Artanis, and she shrugged her shoulders. 'We want to know all that transpired on your way here.' Elrond continued. Artanis interrupted. 'My lord, they are tired. Can you not wait? They will be here a long…' Elrond held up his hand, and Artanis silenced herself. 'Artanis, please return to your room until breakfast. We will see you then.' Artanis opened her mouth as to speak, but caught herself. She stood, bowed to the council, and then left the Hall of Fire.

*Laughs at Bess' description of Elrond as a 'snobby so-and-so' again* I love it...

========================
As Elrond watched her leave, he shook his head. She was every inch her father's daughter, but she had a bit of her mother in her too. He wondered if he should have been so stern with her. She had a delicate spirit, though she was a fiery fighter as well. He turned back to the business at hand.

Artanis ran into her room, and threw herself onto her bed. She knew that Mithrandir and Bilbo could hear her, and that they would probably be in to check on her soon. She took a deep breath, and gained control of her emotions. She sat up, and got off her bed. She walked to her desk.

She shuffled the papers around, searching for one of her sketch tablets. She found it, and flipped through it, searching for a certain sketch. When she had found it, she picked up a simply carved wooden box, and walked to the window seat. She sat down, leaning against the window, and opened the box. She chose a pencil from the box, and then set it next to her. She looked around her room for a few moments, and then bent her head over the sketch tablet.

================================
That was how Bilbo found her twenty minutes later. He walked to her, and then cleared his throat quietly. Artanis smiled to herself, and slowly raised her head. 'Yes Master Bilbo?' She asked, tucking the pencil behind her ear. 'Gandalf wanted to know what was wrong.' He said quietly. Artanis smiled. 'You may tell Mithrandir that I had another disagreement with Elrond, but that I'm feeling much better now.' She said. Bilbo nodded, then left her room. She sighed softly, and looked wistfully at the sketch.

She stood up, stretched, and then closed the sketchbook. She walked to the desk, and put her drawing supplies in their proper place. She stacked the loose sketches, drawings, and scribblings, making the desk look much more organized. She straightened the wall hanging, and then made her bed, something she had forgotten to do earlier. She then walked to the recovery room.

Mithrandir smiled softly at her, and she smiled back, her eyes a light green. Bilbo was sitting on a chair, watching Frodo carefully. Artanis watched him, smiling at his devotion to his young nephew. 'Artanis, why were you crying?' Mithrandir asked, she stood wordless for a moment, and then slowly replied. 'Nothing of much importance. I merely had a disagreement with Elrond.' Mithrandir looked at her, a look of understanding crossing his wise face.

'What about?' Piped Bilbo, still watching Frodo, yet listening for her answer. She walked to the bed. 'I'd rather not talk about it.' She said simply. Bilbo nodded. He jumped off the chair, and stomped his foot indignantly. 'Why Frodo?' He asked angrily. Tears started streaming down his face, and he ran to Artanis. She held him till the tears slowed, then gently answered. 'Many things happen, many bad, and some good. Only Illúvatar himself knows exactly what will happen. Ours is not to wonder why, ours is to accept our circumstances, and shine despite them.' She fell silent, not knowing how to continue. 'Though I do not know Frodo, I feel like it. You've told me about him, about his life, about his habits. And looking at him now, I hurt as well.' She felt Bilbo inhale deeply, and released him from her arms. He stood, and looked at her. 'You're right.' He said quietly, he started to continue, but was interrupted by a clear bell.

And chapter six ends!

Chapter Seven: Breakfast and Elven Hospitality

Artanis stood quickly. 'That's the breakfast bell. I have to go.' She quickly walked out of the recovery room, and then out of her room. She walked down the stairs, pausing briefly to wait for Lo. She went down the stairs, and Lo followed. 'What did Elrond want?' Artanis stepped off the last stair. 'I don't know.' She said carefully.

He nodded, stepping off the last stair. He walked beside Artanis as she walked to the dining hall. She entered, noticing that Elrond was there. He sought her eyes, yet Artanis studying the floor. Sam, Merry, and Pippin were apparently watching for her. She walked to them.

'Are you hungry?' She asked, knowing they probably were. They all nodded. She smiled, and walked to her seat. Lo looked at her. 'What?' She asked him. He shrugged his shoulders, passing her a platter of fruit. She accepted the platter, and chose two apples, and an orange. She picked up two apples and an orange for each of the hobbits as well.

A few minutes later she had finished her breakfast. She quietly excused herself, and then walked outside. She sat down on the edge of the fountain, watching the water drop into the carven marble basin. She immersed herself in the sound of the falling water, mixed with the waterfalls surrounding Imladris. She sat there for roughly thirty minutes, thinking about her past.

She was 'awakened' by Lo. He sat down next to her, the hobbits sitting in front of her. She smiled. 'Did you like your breakfast?' She asked Pippin, and he nodded bashfully. Sam spoke. 'What are we…' but he was interrupted by the sound of a loud voice. A loud, dwarven voice. Artanis stood quickly, pulling a knife from her clothing, but keeping it hidden in the folds of her cloak.

==================================
Lo stood beside her, a look of disbelief on his face. There hadn't been a dwarf in Imladris since Bilbo's journey, almost eighty years ago. The hobbits stood in front of her. She watched the dwarves, a look of uneasiness on her face. The dwarves approached, looking around. Artanis called loudly to the dwarves. 'What business do you have in Imladris?' Lo laughed quietly, and Artanis could tell he was fighting an urge. And she knew exactly what he was fighting. Lo was fighting the urge to sing 'The Greeting Song' that they had sung when Thorin had come to Imladris with his group of dwarves and Bilbo.

The leader of the dwarves was a tall (for a dwarf) red-haired dwarf. There was something vaguely familiar about him, but Artanis couldn't put her finger on it. He called loudly. 'We have come for the council of Elrond. We need to ask him a question.' Artanis and Lo looked at each other in confusion. By that time, two other male Elves, as well as Legolas had come out to confront the dwarves. Artanis turned. 'Watch them. I'll go fetch Elrond.' They nodded, and Legolas pulled an arrow from his quiver, loosely placing it on his bowstring.

Artanis walked into the building, looking around. She found Elrond talking in the Hall of Fire. She walked to his side, and tapped his shoulder. 'Excuse me.' She said quietly. Elrond excused himself. 'What Art?' He asked. She looked around apprehensively. 'Can we walk outside?' She asked him. He nodded, and began walking. When they had reached the hallway, he asked again. 'Is anything wrong?' She waited for a moment, and replied. 'There are about a dozen dwarves outside.' She said quickly. Elrond looked intrigued. Artanis led Elrond outside to the fountain. When they reached the group, Elrond spoke to the group of dwarves.

'What do you want?' He asked them. Lo backed up, and the hobbits sat down on the ground at Artanis' feet. Lo began to hum 'The Greeting Song', and Artanis elbowed him in the side. He quickly silenced. The hobbits looked at the group of dwarves and Elrond with interest. Artanis watched as well, anxious to see Elrond's reaction to the visitors. When the dwarves dismounted, and followed Elrond, Lo acted as if he were about to fall over.

Chapter Eight: A Quiet Afternoon and Evening (I made a mistake earlier, that was the end of chapter seven)

Elrond was closeted in the Hall of Fire with the dwarves for many hours. Artanis and the hobbits spent most of the morning in her room, or watching Frodo. Then Artanis started sketches of each of them. After four hours, Artanis tired of drawing. 'Why don't we go on a walk again?' Sam asked. Merry looked at him. 'Why?' Pippin asked. Sam threw up his hands. 'Never mind. I just thought…' He stopped when a bell rang three times. Artanis stood, hurriedly putting up her supplies. 'Supper time.' She said. Pippin started out the door while Merry tried to stop him.

Sam waited for Artanis, and then they walked down to the hall. Merry and Pippin were waiting for them. Artanis sat down in her normal seat. The hobbits sat down next to her, on her left side, while Lo and Më sat on her right. The supper was simple, as most meals in Imladris were. Artanis ate as much as she could, and the hobbits ate what she couldn't. When they were done, Artanis stood, and quietly excused herself and them.

'Can we see Master Frodo now?' Sam asked, when they had reached her room. Artanis nodded, and walked in front of them into the recovery room. Bilbo was watching Frodo. When Artanis entered, he looked up, a solitary tear running down his face. Sam entered right behind Artanis, and glanced at Bilbo, then turned his full attention to his master. Merry and Pippin both went right to Bilbo, and began conversing softly with him in their piping voices.

Sam had climbed onto a chair, and was staring at Frodo, as if he was trying to find out what Frodo was dreaming at that precise moment. Artanis walked over, and put one hand on Sam's shoulder, trying to wordlessly assure him that Frodo would endure. It seemed to her that Frodo was shining, not brightly, but as if there was almost invisible fire kindled inside of him.

Sam looked at Bilbo, and almost broke into tears. Artanis walked into her room, and returned with a lit candle, for the daylight was hurriedly vanishing. An individual female voice drifted in from the courtyard. Artanis guessed that it was Evenstar, for she often sang in the evenings. Her guess was confirmed when a male voice joined the song. Bilbo smiled at her, and Artanis walked to the window. She looked down, and saw Estel and Evenstar sitting near the fountain.

=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^
She turned to the hobbits. 'That's the signal for bed. You all have had a hard day. Go to sleep, I'll stay with Bilbo and watch Frodo.' Sam nodded, and Merry pulled Pippin into her room. Artanis heard them snuggle into their beds, and sat down next to Bilbo. 'Do you want to stay? I'll watch Frodo if you want a break.' She told him. He shook his head, and replied. 'I'll stay here.' Artanis nodded, and then went to stand at the bedside. 'Elrond will probably be here soon.' Bilbo looked confused. 'Why?' He asked her, she turned to him. 'He hasn't found the splinter yet.'

Bilbo looked at the floor sadly. 'I never meant for this to happen.' He told her quietly. 'Bilbo...' She began, walking to him. She knelt, her face level with his face. 'None of this is your fault. If we all claimed responsibility for the evils of the world, we would all tire quickly. You did not mean any evil to happen when you found The Ring. All you knew is that it could be useful. But now we know that this Ring is the life force of Sauron. To rid Middle-Earth of his threat, we must rid Middle-Earth of The Ring.' She faltered here, and remained silent. A tear ran down her face, and Bilbo carefully wiped it away. 'Shed no tears Artanis. All will come to an end.' She nodded, and stood. 'I'd better check on them.'

Elrond entered Artanis' room soon after, to find Artanis tucking Pippin into her bed. He looked at her disapprovingly. She defended herself. 'He couldn't sleep, so I sung him to sleep. I'm not going to be sleeping tonight anyway, and you know it.' She said fiercely, yet quietly. He nodded. Artanis followed him into the recovery room.

Bilbo was sitting in the window seat, just as Artanis had left him. Elrond watched Frodo from the foot of the bed, while Artanis gathered the needed supplies from a carved cabinet. She laid them out on a light wooden table, and stood ready to help Elrond.

Elrond moved to Frodo's left shoulder, and then turned to Artanis. 'Sit down. It will probably be a while until I need your help.' Artanis nodded, then sat down on the floor near Bilbo. She pulled her legs against her body, and leaned her head forward. Bilbo leaned against the window, and watched as Elrond bent over Frodo.

The room was silent, except for an occasional groan from Frodo. Elrond worked feverishly, pausing only to send Artanis for more water or cloths. Bilbo often helped her retrieve whatever Elrond sent her for. After almost three hours Elrond called Artanis to his side. 'Come here. I'm close to it. I'm going to need your help.' Artanis nodded and moved nearer to the head of the bed, leaning over Frodo's shoulder while holding a candle. Mithrandir walked into the room, and silently watched the activity; almost surprised that Frodo didn't awaken.

After fifteen minutes of searching, Elrond pulled out a two-inch long splinter of gun-gray metal. Artanis collapsed onto the floor with relief, gracefully of course. Bilbo ran over and helped her up, and Elrond went about closing the incision. Mithrandir quietly inquired of Elrond about the 'search' for the splinter, while Bilbo and Artanis went for hot water to clean the room with.

'What's going to happen now?' Bilbo asked, as he tottered up the stairs with a load of linen rags. Artanis looked at him, concerned that he might not make it up the stairs. 'Please let me take some of those.' She said, repositioning the bowl of water she was carrying. Bilbo shook his head obstinately. 'I can handle it.' He said over his shoulder. Artanis smiled, and continued up the stairs.
