Yes very sad. A great actor and a man who lived life to the full. Not a safe character but he lived a long and sometimes wild life.
So don't overmourn; celebrate what was a vibrant time here.

This is really sad. I now wounder what they'll do for the rest of the Movies. Who will they get to replace him? It seems an impossible task. One I would hate to undertake.:(

I see many a good sentiment for the man, the actor.
I wonder...did he know that life was too short to not live it the the fullest? Should we not follow his example? How many of us will pass beyond this mortal realm, and have people say the same for us?
I intend to.
Good night Richard.
Sleep well, my King.

REMEMBER
by Christina Rossetti, 1862
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me my the hand.
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
Rest in peace Richard Harris.

Thanks I found it after my father died in 1983 and it has helped me not only cope with his death but others in the family since. I keep a copy in the front of the book I use most in my house. A leather bound Little oxford dictionary, the only place I could think of that I would never loose it.

Very good Idea, for a very good Poem. I personally lost my Gradfather 2 years ago. For me it's difficult because he died the day before my 23 birthday. I think thou that what made it easier was that my family still threw a party for me. It showed tremendous courage on there part. I loved that they did that for me. My only wish on that day was that he could have been there with me. Not just in spirit.:(

I hope you are over the worst of the pain now. My Dad died two weeks before my sister's 17th and six weeks before christmas not a nice time but we did try for my sister. The smiles may have been a little forced but we got through it and when all said and done that's the reality of life.
I hope that Richard has finally got rid of the pain he will have been carrying for past few months.

Ach, such a sad...and sometimes, we feel, an impossibly situation to deal with. teddy, so glad that u have moved on....but as we all should be....ever thankful that we will never forget those cherished memories which can never fade.
for Richard Harris, sad that who couldn't leave his mark on HP as with Gladiator, Cry, Patriot Games, and the scores of movies he has made timeless. but we can be thankful for the everlasting images we have of him....after all...he couldn't sing, but he could damn well act
cheers mate

mecry I saw the interview from 1973 with parky (they showed it on sunday evening) He was so funny. think robin williams. seriously he just kept coming up with funny stories and anecdotes (sp) but he looked so different except for his eyes. It's a shame to lose someone so great. oh well there are still some great actors. most are in hp and lotr and hopefully richard harris might have inspired some of the children he worked. will they be the next richard harris?

Did anyone in the States see the Harry Potter kids on Oprah today? The whole episode was about HP. They made no mention of Richard Harris. I know it was probably taped a good while ago, but I think they could have editted in an Oprah commentary about it or something.

Oprah is not the kind of person to allow an untimely death to
stand in the way of her show. She would never think to edit in

I guess it was moved from the discussion about Richard Harris' death... I posted that they didn't say anything in yesterday's Oprah (in the States) about the death of Mr. Harris and the episode was all about Harry Potter.
Oh yeah, Bono was Oprah's saving grace. That hour rocked! If only they had one show a week about Bono, the world would be a better place.

Alot can be said of Richard Harris and alot has been said here. It's good to see other people acknowledge how folks like him (actors that is) made us feel. My favorite quote from Mr. Harris is one I try to live by every day, "never take yourself too seriously". Keen words to live by! I find life is just easier if you can laugh about something all the time.:)

Well, Adunauriel, I'm back from the party in the outback! And yes, it was fun, not the funniest party I've been to, but nice to get out and be with friends. The food was good and luckily there were two different spaces for people to be in. That way everybody could be satisfied what music and company applies.
Had a bit of troubble on our way home, though, which didn't really come as any surprise to me. A couple of the younger guys who'd had a little bit too much started fighting, blood and broken glass and a the good moods were gone in a blink of an eye. The bussdriver had to take one of our coworkers, an innocent bystander who got in the middle of it, to the emergencyroom after we reached the city. He wasn't seriously hurt, but the wound needed to be cleaned up. Can't understand why people have to poor themselves full of the stuff like that, when they can't take it! Just makes me so flaming mad, kinda puts you off partying for a while.pfbbt I'm afraid my thoughts on partying are coloured by last nights experience right now.verymad
Well, I'm suspecting that tomorrows reactions on it will be serious for at least one of the stupid ***holes, see I'm sensouring myself so the mods won't have to!

Did anybody hear a rumour about Peter O'Toole being cast for Dumbledoor? Can't remember where I read it, (advanced teflon-brain), a miracle that it got stuck in there somewhere. Wait somethings breaking through...was he Lawrence of Arabia? Haven't seen that film entirely either, shame on me. Hmmm.
Adunauriel
December 17th,2002, 08:32 PM
Yes, I do believe Peter O'Toole was Lawrence of Arabia.. I've never seen the movie thou.... Just a quick note, I don't think Richard Harris would mind if we talked about different things here... I'm sure he, just like anyone else wouldn't want us to dwell on his death.... Just MHO... ;)

I agree Adun, and I only meant that we should not lose site of the reason this thread was started....lets at least keep it on topic of Richard and his accomplishments in life and in his legacy...but you are right, he wouldn't like us to dwell on it..;)

Back to the thread topic (I don't know if someone's already mentioned this) but I heard that Richard Harris will be replaced by a CGI version of himself in the Harry Potter films. If they do this, he'll have a stand in for non face shots and a digitally created face in other shots. I know this method may sound crazy, but they did it in Gladiator.

I heard an official report from Warner Bros. today stating that CG Dumbledore is simply a rumor. They have no intention of digitally adding in Harris, they want to find a live actor to play the part, but they have yet to find that person.

I too have heard Christopher Lee mentioned here, and there... I think he'd be a pretty good Dumbledore...;)
Eowyn
December 20th,2002, 11:10 PM
but christopher lee is always seen as the bad guy! It would be like Alan Rickman being nice! (I know he was in sense and sensibility but that just proves how wierd it is!)
Saruman
December 20th,2002, 11:19 PM
He's actually my favourite actor. Although he may be the villain most of the time, he has played goodies (including Flay in Gormenghast, and Sherlock Holmes I believe).
Who knows? Maybe there is a darker side to Dumbledore in the books that haven't come out yet.
Cuiel Rilwen
December 21st,2002, 08:21 AM
I have also seen Lee being mentioned a lot on the issue, both on the net and in the papers. But every time its him either saying he would like to do it, or denying that he's been approached by WB.
I must say I love Lee as an actor, he's really good! But I DON'T think he'll be right for the part, and sorry but his looks are important in that judgement! I know a persons face can be altered, but how do you change those dark, controling eyes? I always feel like I'm being hypnotized or something whenever I look at him, they definatly look unforgiving and well kind of mean, not like Dumbledoor at al!
Ney, there has to be someone more suitable, someone who looks strong AND kind, and ofcourse has the right acting qualities. No matter how much Lee wants this part. WB is bound to have heard of it, so I hope them not contacting him about it yet means they agree with ME!

I think Anthony Hopkins would make a good Dumbledore, I know he was Hannibal so he may scare some people, but I think he would be great in the role. He has the misty blue eyes Dumbledore needs, a comforting smile, and, to my recollection, he has yet to play a wizard.
Lintefaniel
December 22nd,2002, 07:55 AM
There are so many great British actors that would be perfect in this role! But I have to agree, it would be nice to see someone not having played a wizard before! Think of some of the obscure actors who are ideal as Richard Harris was. It's a toss up and I fear that some fans may be let down if they set their hopes too high for the replacement.

Yes, I knew, I checked on Ian's site a day or two ago. He was investigating a role as a character in later movies. Who? Lupin? Black? Wormtail?
Actually, I think that Warren Mitchell would make a good Lupin. I've only seen him in Gormenghast, though.

Ian's too old for Lupin or Black, both are supposed to be around the age of Harry's father. I'm thinking Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan should play the roles.

Those two would be PERFECT!!! I love Sean Bean (for obvious reasons), but I also love Colin Firth for Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones' Diary! I could really see them in the roles.

I've seen Michael Gambon in several things both contempary and period dramas and liked him in everything I've seen. He's an excellent actor and he would give everything to the part if indeed he is in the running.

I didn't know that... I think he would be a pretty good Dumbledore. He's old enough to play the part, and he's got the quietness that's a must for Dumbledore...:)

Peter O'Toole's name has been mentioned since November. I personally think he will be the best person for the part seeing as we can't have Richard Harris.

January 21st,2003, 07:29 AM
According to something I read this summer, PoA isn't gonna be out 'til the summer of 2004, but I don't think they've ever talked about a year off. As far as I can rememeber they wrapped up the filming for CoS late in july, and are supposed to start filming PoA late in february/ early march. CoS took 9 months, and apparently PoA is harder to addapt, and longer as well, so we'll have to wait and see how long it takes!

I'm not so sure about that...he doesn't look so awfully different from Harris in some pics I've seen. Can't remember to have seen him in any films, but that really says nothing, cuz I didn't think I had seen Ian McKellan before LotR either, and ofcourse I had! He even was in David Copperfield with Dan and Maggie! Seems like tese old talents are so capable of changing their looks and ways of acting, that they sometimes become completely unrecognizable!
(Was that a lame excuse for not noticing? I guess so!lol )
Lessa
February 22nd,2003, 05:07 PM
I think I'll reserve judgement until I've seen him in action. So far all I have seen of him has been excellent. It must be very daunting for him to step into someone else's shoes, especially someone as well loved in the part as Richard Harris was.

I guess that's why he doesn't look the part to me.. It will be hard seeing someone other then Richard Harris playing the role of Dumbledore....
