yeah so any movies that completely confused you and you had to watch them about a million times before you got it? That was me and Enemy of the state. and the Matrix which I had to watch about 2 or 3 times before I got it and that's all I could think of for now which ones turned your thoughts to mush?

Loved Memento!! favorite movie of last year (one of them)....actually watched it with mum (her first time of seeing it, my 3rd i think) on the flight over to Australia...that lasted about 2 hours, spent the next 10 explaining it to her!!!

to be honest, no movie has ever really confused me...tho a few i've just not gotten, the appeal of it. hmmm...have to think about one, there's got to be on in here....lol ;)

Catz
October 30th,2002, 03:24 PM
Memento? thats easy....just think of it as going backwards...not confusing at all really.....loved it......every time you thought you had the guy pegged things changed....and even at the end...can you really be sure you know the truth? very cool movie:cool:
and the Matrix wasnt confusing was it? i thought it was pretty simple...but then as i say, long time SF buff, i kind of have the conventions down...dont have to think about the standard plots too much....and the basic premise of the matrix is very old....its just the butterfly story lol

Vanilla Sky was good - although the ending was rather bizarre - I had to explain it to my mum!

Gosford Park was pretty complex (an excellent film, btw - unless you're easily bored), not in the way of actually solving the mystery, I just found it a bit difficult to sort out all of the charactors and understand each of their personal story lines. I'm one of those people who has to get a movie through and through until I know it thouroughly...... but I'm strange. :p

Well don't worry about that...most of French movies make you brain hurts...most of the time you have to listen carefully since there is A LOT of talking...lol Us Latin blood people we talk a lot (with words and with HANDS ) lol

Was it Amelie or the French title Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain ?

Catz
November 3rd,2002, 08:33 AM
i liked Amelie....lol admittedly i did see the subtitled version, but i dont think it was that confusing...less of course you saw it minus the subtitles....but then again an advertisment is confusing in a language you dont understandlol lol

Pulp Fiction kinda made my brain hurt the first time I saw it. I still loved it thou:) I've seen it a few times now, and understand it. But, that first time took me awhile cause it's all cut up and crazy.:)

I loved the Matrix....fortunately i was able to see it the first time with someone who had already seen it and was not aking questions...i could just sit...watch...and understand...and , but that's a totally different issue... :nono: lol... The second time i saw it however, it was at a sleepover, where a lot of my more weird mates started a political debate around about the time keanu took the pills...needless to say, once the debate was finished and they returned to the film they were beyond confused! roflmao

There have been a few films that i needed to watch more than once to really understand...mostly war films...when you have about fifty men all in the same uniform it's hard to distinguish who's who...especially when most of them are down right good looking...i'm thinking black hawk down here...i decided i should see that again cos it got confusing...but it's a bit too bloody...i'll hvae to see it with someone else next time so that i can hide behind them when he decides to stick fingers around inside people's artieries...pfbbt :elfeek: :(

I sat down to watch the Matrix some weeks ago, had high expectations. Was terribly disapointed when the opening sequenses disgusted me in such a way that I left the TV and my husband to advantage of the pc and you lot. Haven't tried again, though I probably should, feel like I'm missing out on something.

Vanilla Sky was excellent, very disturbing plot, but very good. After watching it we just sat there trying to let the end sink in. I was very surprised at it, and didn't really understand everything 'till we had thought and disgussed it for a while. Think I probably have to see it again, to get it right in my head!

TheRingBearer

Pulp Fiction is one of my all time favs (just see the top 10 film thread ;) )

Lost Highway was made by the same guy who did Mullahod Drive (spelling lol ) which I haven't seen but Lost Highway is good.

Adunauriel
November 3rd,2002, 09:17 PM
Cuiel, I would highly reccomend that you try watching Matrix again. Yes the begining is a bit grafic, but it does get better I promise. Once the Action and everything starts happening you'll be drawn in. Fabulous movie loved it the very first time I saw it. I didn't have a problem understanding it. Saw it 4 times in the theater, couldn't stop it was just too cool. I can't wait until the next movie come out.:)

Ronin
November 3rd,2002, 10:54 PM
can't imagine that they would show Amelie...fantastic movie btw ...without its subtitles.

oh, and loved Gosford Park...quite right that it was a little confusing to sort out all the details and such of everyone's character...but after that initial hump, wonderful movie. tho not for those with a thin patience ;)

Catz
November 4th,2002, 02:11 AM
mmmm must agree with Teddy, Cuiel....do persevere with the Matrix.....it really is an excellent movie
and Amelie...to be honest i think i would have understood most of it even without the subtitles....another great movie
i do know one i had to watch twice to follow....but thats mainly cos it travels thru several centuries and a sex change for the protagonist!!lol
and thats Orlando....which i dunno if anyones seen....with Tilda Swinton in the title role....its a sumptuous piece but as i say, can be hard to keep track of.....
:catz:

Adunauriel
November 4th,2002, 02:38 AM
I've seen Orlando, your right it's wierd to watch. It took me awhile to realize that Tilda was playing a man to begin with. But, it's a cool movie.:)

Cuiel Rilwen
November 4th,2002, 07:32 AM
Which movie was that, Catz? Sure I'll try the Matrix again, I'll let you all know when I get through it!

Catz
November 4th,2002, 08:03 AM
"Orlando"....an adaptation of the Virginia Woolfe novel, Cuiel....which i keep meaning to read but have never gotten around to....lol
its a beautiful movie, but as i say....a bit hard to follow on the first viewing
:catz:

Sindarin
November 4th,2002, 05:22 PM
"Orlando" was an okay movie. I enjoyed it somewhat.

Anyway, almost any David Lynch film confuses me. Except for "The Elephant Man", or possibly "The Straight Story".

Also, every film directed by Ken Russell and Peter Greenaway constantly annoy me. pfbbt

Cuiel Rilwen
November 4th,2002, 07:43 PM
Oh, silly me, I thought Orlando was in it, and had a sexchange operation...coulndn't really see him there...yikes!

Ronin
November 5th,2002, 03:21 AM
Orlando eh? i must say...time travel and sex changes...thats thoroughly interesting...for purely cinematic reasons

now David Lynch, absolutely adore him as a director...perhaps because he does confuse me a bit...the man has brilliant visions.

and Matrix...stick with it! worth the trip...in more sense than one ;)

The Matrix and Fight Club were ruined for me by people telling me about them....

I got lost during Requiem for a Dream the first time, and also Vanilla Sky.....

Also, Rules of Attraction, because it had no plot

Togo Bleecker
November 6th,2002, 06:14 AM
thats a shame..my sisters french teacher ruined the sixth sense for her, and numerous people ruined titanic for me.. curse the people that ruin movies for other people!

Brindlescruff
November 6th,2002, 11:54 PM
Actually, the Sixth Sense and The Others were ruined for me by the same person who ruined The Matrix and Titanic....my dear older sister...blech!

oh well

Adunauriel

You know I new the secret about Red when it came to Sixth Sence, but it still didn't ruin it for me. It helped it make better sence for me.:)

Isiltįri
November 8th,2002, 01:51 AM
Hmm.....the ending to Planet of the Apes confused me, because I hadn't seen the sequels to the original one.

Oh, and I can't stand David Lynch films.

Catz
November 8th,2002, 02:23 AM
i rather like David Lynch....maybe im weird lol.....tho he does steer perilously close to self parody at times....
and while its a pity of the twist to a movie is spoilt for you, if the movies any good you should be able to watch and enjoy it anyway
:catz:

Ronin
November 8th,2002, 03:58 AM
rather like? Love David Lynch films...can honestly say that i adore being taken on the journeys that this man leads me on. utterly fantastic stuff...and hey...he single handedly launched the incredible Naomi Watts' career...not bad that

Isiltari, which Planet of the Apes...the new one?

how can anyone ruin Titanic...tell u that the boat sank? lol oh yeah...what major plot twists are there in the Matrix? and catz, u're right...if a movie is that good...revealing plot twists should not ruin the movie. i knew the ending to the Sixth Sense prior to seeing it...still thoroughly enjoyed it. and love The Others...even after knowing the big "twist".

and btw, have to say that i loved Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club and Vanilla Sky. and that while Rules of Attraction might not have the most coherent plot, it is a social commentary...and should be taken as such. wonderful, wonderful movie

Catz
November 8th,2002, 05:07 AM
well yeah ok.....David Lynch is either a like or loathe thing...and im on the like side....but like you, Ronin, i love the complexities, that the average audience just finds extraneous...hehehe i just love details
and MEOW....thought i was the cat round here lol lol
i have to say that i dont think there are many movies that confuse me......i mean they go to incredible lengths to avoid that ....too far i feel...theres no reason why a movie shouldnt make you stretch a bit...
:catz:

alright Ronin, and everyone else who liked it!
Fight Club is probably my favorite movie

Adunauriel
November 8th,2002, 07:46 AM
Fight Clud was good. It did take me a little time to figure it out. Once I did I enjoyed it more. But then again I haven't really had the urge to see it more then the two times it took for me to figure it out.:)

Ronin
November 8th,2002, 11:14 AM
well, Edward Norton is a favorite actor of mine...simply my favorite scene is when he "shoots himself"....still get goosebumps when i even think of it

Lintefaniel
November 14th,2002, 08:55 AM
Only 2 movies have ever left me scratching my head.....She's so Lovely and Boxing Helena. The first one was based on the ending, it was so ubrupt and confusing. Boxing Helena because it was simply messed up. There is a word for it but I won't use it here!! Just know that it's alllllll messed up!!! :( :boohoo:

Togo Bleecker
November 15th,2002, 04:10 AM
i must agree with ronin, the others completely fooled me, as for how can someone titanic...well i didnt think it was possible either but trust me..THEY CAN and they did, BUT like catz said, i enjoyed the movie anyway, and still enjoy it even after all the coverage it got (some people hate it now because of all the promotion and such). Another movie i was confused in was A.I. but i think that is because during the second hour, i stopped paying attention, man that movie dragged on and on and on and on

Ronin
November 16th,2002, 04:24 PM
u expect something coherent from a Sean Penn film? (joke - sorta) ;) lol

and no worries Lin, i just think we know what phrase u're trying to come up with

Catz
November 16th,2002, 04:29 PM
indeed we do lol
ive always been tempted to watch Boxing Helena.....just to see if its as bad as everyone says it is......fortunately thus far ive resisted that temptation lol lol
:catz:

Ronin
November 17th,2002, 01:56 PM
hmmm...never had the chance to see it, obviously i myself must succumb ;) lol

Lintefaniel
November 18th,2002, 04:45 AM
Lets just say, it's wrong!! And I used to think Julien Sands was neat!! He's pretty cool in Rose Red, the latest Stephen King made for TV movie....the one before the Carrie remake....anyone seen that one ??

Miruvor
November 18th,2002, 05:47 AM
Catz. I wouldn't bother to watch Boxing Helena. You'll want to take a bath afterwards to wash it off, like as if you've been raped. It's awful, and feels disrepectful to women. Think "heterosexual Jeffrey Dahmer".

Has any one mentioned "Momento" yet. That confused me, but in a pleasant way, culminating in clarity at the end. (Sort of.)

Lintefaniel
November 18th,2002, 09:12 AM

hated the Carrie remake and thought the Blood Red miniseries was a great start but failed so miserably at the end

Catz
November 19th,2002, 03:36 AM
yeah i pretty much know the plot of Boxing Helena...and it is challanging.....but i cant really say not having seen it..
Loved memento too.....and want to see Rose Red, tho if it ever gets here is another matter *sighs* lol lol

Togo Bleecker
November 19th,2002, 04:42 AM
Rose Red is WONDERFUL!! one of the best scary movies i have seen and humorous too. I first watched it at my sweet sixteen, to add a spooky effect (i had a halloween party cause my birthday is near halloween) the electricity went out right during the middle of it..talk about scary, all the sudden we were all sitting in the dark blinking. For decoration i put black paper all over my basements white walls so i remember asking sean a friend who helped me put it up..."uhh sean, did you cover up that emergancy light?" he did not help calm my fright by answering "you guys have an emergancy light?!" anyway you guys probably didnt want to know that, but all in all i suggest rose red, it is a VERY very good movie

Lintefaniel
November 20th,2002, 10:20 PM
Ronin, you're right it was pretty weak towards the end. I thouroughly enjoyed The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer-My life at Rose Red....it's done quite masterfully indeed...

Ronin
December 22nd,2002, 03:19 PM
I've yet to read the diary, must do that sooner or later. However, Rose Red just failed utterly for me....but then again, didn't have the lights go out half-way through ;)

I thought Rose Red was so bad my friend was scared out of her mind though but I found it rather boring but to each his own I guess

*bows down*

*worships matrix* - love that move.

others that confused me... Lock Stock required concentration, as did Circus. Guessed the twist in The Others. Need to rewatch Black Hawk Down, by the time I'd worked out how to distinguish a character from all the other khaki he'd been blown up.

Vanilla Sky. Ahhh!!! Next time I watch it, I'm going to mute it, skip the really horrible scenes and stare at Tom Cruise.

u didn't like Vanilla Sky? it is a.....great....movie!

Arwen Elf
January 11th,2003, 06:17 PM
They said it was supposed to be like the Matrix, so I was pumped! Then, Tom Cruise and all, and I had just seen Minority Report again, and loved that one. but I did NOT like it. I think it was the obscenities and gratuituos sexual intercourse that turned me off. . . but then, there was the entire fact that one didn't know what was a dream and what wasn't! But, if it makes you happy, the part at the end was probably one of the best and most memerable things I've ever seen in a movie.

Arwen Undomiel

hmm penelope pit-stop cruz alone is enough to deter me from wanting to watch vanilla sky. i find her rather annoying.

Ronin
January 19th,2003, 05:51 PM
aye, that does make me happy Arwen ;) who in the world told u it was like the Matrix tho?? they should be drawn and quartered for lying so utterly. obsencities and the sexuality didn't bother me, so couldn't really comment. i don't know tho...to me, was pretty obvious what was a dream and what wasn't.....but loved trying to figure it out. for an american movie, took a lot of risks?

cruz was lovely in the film....why do u find her annoying?

Cuiel Rilwen
January 19th,2003, 05:58 PM
I loved Vanilla sky, allthough puzzled by the dream/ reality thing too...but hey that's what makes it fun! I'm gonna get it in my shelf cuz its definatly a film I'll watch again, my little brain sweats but needs the exercise. And yes, it was rather surprisingly risky...and not what I had expected...again good on Tom Cruise!

Arwen Undomiel
January 19th,2003, 06:27 PM
i just find penelope pit-stop cruz annoying! can't really explain why. i've seen a little bit of the spanish (or mexican) version on which vanilla sky was a remake of, and it seems superior to the latter.

Penelope PitStop is a cartoon character Cuiel........and a particularly irritating one at that lol

I have to admit, I didn't want to see Snatch, because the name turned me off. But I did see it and it was great! Same thing with Fight Club. That name would just not draw me to a movie, but I finally did see it and it was WONDERFUL. (Did someone already mention Fight Club as a 'confusing movie' candidate? It sure tried to be.)

Arwen Undomiel
January 31st,2003, 05:31 AM
i would definitely put it down in my 'confusing films' list - it's just the end that completely baffles me...

SindarinGirl
January 31st,2003, 05:50 PM
Okay, now I have to see Fight Club - I thought it was straightforward men prove themselves by beating each other to a pulp. I guess I'm mistaken? Cool!

And yeah, I thought Snatch was going to be about something totally different from the name AHEM :naughty: but it was about thieves. Maybe that's why it's confusing! lol

Arwen Undomiel

Miruvor

They are both enjoyable.
Snatch is a funny fast paced comedy of errors (Very English flavored)
Fight Club is a superb Pyscho-thriller with surprising surprises.

By the way. Brad Pitt is in both of them.

I thought A Beautiful Mind was really confusing. It took several viewings to figure out. I didn't get what was a hallucination and what was real.
A Space Odessey was also really weird. The people hardly talked at all!

just saw adaptation........heheh neat movie......but i didnt find it confusing..........more intriguing as you tried to guess which of the plot strands from which screen play was going to be woven in next........movie within movie, within movie........fun lol
and i had to admire Meryl Streeps guts to be shown as quite so old looking..........and yeah it was deliberate.......thats a tough thing to do in LaLa land where you MUST be forever youthful......tho i DO have to agree with the amount we saw lol

I have seen Vanilla Sky (it was better the second time I saw it.. I didn't really like it that much the first time for some reason), The Others, Fight Club, Memento.. they're all great. It takes some time to figure them out maybe, but that just makes them so much better. :)
I have two other movies though that I didn't understand at all the first time I saw them.. "Citizen Kane" and "2001: A Space Odyssey".

That wasn't Streeps' breasts...or to say, those actually. 2001...a little confusing at first....but honestly, i've never seen a movie thats lost me. except perhaps A Beautiful Mind. but that was purely on how absolutely wretched it is ;)

haven't seen odyssey or beautiful mind - i got so angry about the latter winning 'best film' oscar, that i refused to rent it!

Beautiful Mind isn't that great. It's all that math and the main character is really weird. Plus there are tons of time jumps and really strange hallucinations that the guy has.
Beautiful Mind wasn't half as good as FOTR!

even without seeing a beautiful mind, i already knew that! my sister said it was really good! i didn't know it featured hallucinations and time-warping! hmmm, am getting rather put-off by it now...

not time warping. It just skips ahead several years at a time.

He had schizophrenia which can cause hallucinations, so to show what he went through, they had to show how he was afflicted. A lot of his behavior and paranoia was due to his mental illness. There are usually small signs of something not quite right years and years before schizophrenia becomes full-blown, so maybe that's why they skipped large blocks of time.
He was a mathematical genius though, on par with Einstein according to some, so the govt. wanted him to break codes.

So it's a confusing movie about a man who's brain really does hurt.

Did the government really ask him to go to the pentagon and break codes, or did he imagine that? Still haven't figured it out. Supposedly in real life he didn't see things he heard them, so the movie is not entirely true.

yeah......he was also violent, and unfaithful ........he treated his wife like **** and behaved like a pig as often as not........they tidied that up, didnt they?
i dislike that movie becuase of that.........it is NOT biographical at all.......its a fantasy based on reality, but having a very tenusous link with the real man

Yes, they did tidy it up a bit... which is annoying. It would be interesting to see a movie that told the whole truth.

And he imagined the code breaking.. or at least that's how I understood it. The only thing I didn't understand though was what he did during the days when he thought that he was breaking codes.. wouldn't someone have noticed that he wasn't working? Or did they just not dare to say anything?

I can't say that I've been totally confused by a movie, but one that did start to move me in the direction of confoundment was 'The Game' starring Michael Douglas & Sean Penn. It was directed by David Fincher. I reckon that Michael Douglas is excellent in this and I'm not a real big fan of his. The ending has several twists in the space of five minutes. If you get a chance, check it out. It's not an action movie, but it is quite fascinating.

oh god, i watched that two months ago and it was ridiculously annoying! david fincher is the master of weird and wondrous films, but i didn't like this one - michael douglas was good, however.

Gee Arwen, we keep bumping into one another...
'The Game' is not for everybody, it seems to be an 'acquired taste'.

'natural born killers' is a pretty weird film... i remember seeing bits of it and thinkin' how mashed-up it was! not for the faint-hearted - or the cerebrally challenged! lol lol

I saw Memento only once, but loved it, though it hurt my head, and it's now one of my top ten movies.

the 1 movie that was confusing was basic... its like a mystery/war/action movie... and it has these diff/ stories that keep on getting messed up... otherwise its a pretty good movie
