ahhh poor old Bakshi....there were moments of greatness in the animated version...the Nazgul in Bree was one.......(notice how PJ used it in his movie?) but if theres one thing that this movie shows quite graphically, its that following the source material slaveishly when making a movie is a mistake...this one followed the book closely, to the detriment of the stories clarity and the pacing....two different mediums, what works in print may not work on film
it also suffered from abyssmal characterisation...poor, poor Sam..... ....and as for Aragorn :o i never thought of the King of men wearing a mini skirt:rolleyes: ;) lol
but still.....it was a brave attempt, if somewhat ill advised

This was a very strange movie...loved all the correct lines they got, but the scenery left MUCH to be desired. There were HORRIBLY long moments, like at Weathertop and the Ford and the Rohirrim chasing the Orcs. But I loved the song-bits he thru in. But I hafta give it to him, at the very first reading of Fellowship, I saw Boromir with a Viking helmet. But hello, don't the Men need pants? they would have frozen their buns off in the Misties! And didn't Treebeard look funny?
And he did not do enough research on pronouncing Celeborn's name. It's Celeborn, not Seleborn.
It was almost worth renting it.

I was delighted when I found out that my friend had a copy of the animated lotr video and I decided to watch it late at night with my sister. Mind you..this was AFTER watching PJ's version and I gotta to tell you...it was the most funniest thing I have ever seen.
I wouldn't know where to begin with this...um.. SAM!!! He was a horrible thing to look at wasn't he? I guess Frodo was ok and he had this weird, disturbed look on his face. ARAGORN was a laughingSTOCK!!!!! OMG. I didn't know he was Indian!! LOL.
Merry and Pippin was fairly cute though. Gandalf was pretty decent. I did not very much enjoy Gollum's barely-there cloth that was covering his *ahem* groin. lol
I could go on... Glorfindel looked like he had way too many shots of BOTOX on his forehead!! If you need a good laugh go make sure and check this out. Otherwise...it's a total mess. It was fun comparing the two (live-action and animated) because there were a lot of similarites(I believe PJ mentionied he was "inspired" from this???).

well there were some inspired scenes...not many granted, but the Bree Nazgul one is a beauty....
and as for the combination of live action and animation...it could have worked had it not been for the cartoonish nature of parts of the movie compared to the rotoscoped parts...the thing is, that animation is a very expensive method of filmaking....and i just dont think they had the bucks to do it properly.....
but all up, yeah, i have to admit it is pretty apalling.....Boromir looks like an extra from Das Rhinegeld!!!(sorry Ash lol )
get it if youre a completist....otherwise rent it lol
