Just got back from this film y'all, and wanted to pass along the reccomendation to go see this one!! i'll be short and sweet with this one, as i'm sure u've already made up ur minds as to whether or not u'll see it.
Personally, I've always...appreciated if not enjoyed Eminem's music. and for this, eagerly anticipated his debut on the big screen...anxious to see if he could buck the current trend of pop artists absolutely flunking at the box office. and to be honest, he's bucked it...from here to clear over the moon.
Curtis Hanson has the fantastic trait of being able to withdraw the best from those he directs. and yet again, he proves himself willing and able. Eminem is center stage in 8 Mile and performs brilliantly, yet the film itself would not be what it is without the turns by both Kim Basinger and Mekhi Phifer. Basinger the drug addict mom who despite herself, tries to provide for her children in the most limited way she can...her greatest joy coming from winning 3 grand at bingo. And Phifer and Em's truest friend, pushing and prodding him to do battle lyrically...to prove himself on the street and create the opportunity for himself to rise out of the ghetto. Phifer, it can be said, is to Em's Rabbit as Affleck was to Damon's Hunting.
8 Mile is a film about hope, inspiration and the desire to make something of urself which i can personally relate to heavily. The is a great film...which explores the suburban culture of both Detroit and hip hop...giving both the crediblity that will allow it to suffer the criticism of middle class America.
See Eminem prove himself and watch a film about one voice finding its mic...and its platform...and the those who would flock to it.

Of all the movies you would have to post about there Ronin! lol
Well, personally myself and Lady Arien are usually a bit pu off by these types off movies, but the previews have gotten us interested.
Our son is 18 and is really into this type of music, even so far as to work some a friend of his here locally by assisting with lyrics and even rapping on a few songs. So we've promised and we're gonna do the mom, dad and son thing and go see it tomorrow! ;)
Thanks for the review mate!

what do u mean by "these types of movies"?

and Em has great charisma...and self promotion...have to love that

I wouldn't necessarily see this but I do like Eminems music and he does seem to be doing a great performence. I'll have to wait and see.

I've never really cared for Eminem's music....there are a lot of rap artists who can be effective without all the "mf" this and "mf that" lyrics, but the previews look pretty intense.....our son asked US if we would go see it with him....definitely not our idea, and I wasn't interested at first, but I'm looking forward to it....I personally lean toward the old-school hip hop style, like the SugarHill Gang, Grandmaster Flash, Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J and the like.....but this should be interesting, especially Kim Basinger's character.

so how did y'all like it Lady A?
and have to be honest, of myself, much rather old school hip hop....all those that u mentioned but also Run DMC, Beastie Boys (at least in my mind old school-bridging new).

I thought it was really good (although, let's face it, the role wasn't much of a stretch for him)...but they could've done so much more with the ending...Mr. Mathers could have quite a career as an actor....very intense.

Intense, thats certainly one word for it...tho i personally thought the ending was superbly ambiguous...refreshing for the Hollywood tell-all movies where they feel every single thread must be tied together. glad u enjoyed it

Well, I've heard his music (under protest, of course) and the same intensity that he crafts his lyrics with is evident in his performance....even if you don't like him much (and I don't, really)...I would've preferred an ending like...a shot of him in the studio doing the vocal track for the song they played as the credits were rolling....handing his mom keys to a brand-new house...a filled-to-capacity concert hall with everyone on their feet, etc....they could've done....SOMETHING...maybe they ran out of money??

be assured they didn't run out of money ;)
actually, those are just the kind of endings that would've taken away from the movie for me...another one of Hollywood thinking so much of itself that it has to wrap up everything for the audience...liked the ambiguity of it all.

I haven't seen it and I don't really want to see, don't think it's my kinda thing, but my friends at school have been going on about it for ever, though I do like the songs. ;)

Haven't seen it, but love that fatc that Eminem has been nominated for an Oscar!
It'll be great: there's the celebrities in their ballgowns and tuxes, and Em struts in in a t-shirt and sagging pants and raps for them.
Awesome! Simply splendid!
:D
