Holdan over looked the battle field. This was not the first time he’d come up against the Ogre Magi, the beast captured his outpost on the far side of the mountains and Holdan been trying to get it back ever since. The battle was not going well, the beast was smart, and each time Holdan thought he had the upper hand, the beast would outmaneuver him. Holdan watched a few moments more then motioned to his captain.
The captain walked over, slightly bowing as he approached. “Yes my liege?”
Holdan nodded and replied, “The battle is not going well Josie, call the men back and we will regroup at the castle.”
“A few moments more…” the captain started to protest.
“…And more men will die.” Holdan cut him off. “Call the retreat captain, there is always tomorrow.”
“Yes my liege.” The captain replied turning.
Holdan watched as the horns blew and his front line formed a barrier while the back line retreated. The orcs tried to advance but the line held strong and retreated slowly backward, a day later they were back at the castle.
Holdan wasted no time in calling a meeting and watched as his captain and advisors entered the chamber, once they were seated he began.
“I have decided to hire a mage.” He announced.
A mummer went through the room before Elcolen, his senior advisor spoke up. “My lord, we can defeat the orcs without the help of an outsider.”
“Elcolen, it’s been five years since Grecko took over the outpost and we are no closer to taking it over. I have found a battle mage willing to take him on, his name is Kelm and he has been up against Grecko before.” Holdan responded.
“Then why isn’t Grecko dead.” His advisor commented.
“Kelm was not as strong as he is now.” Holdan answered. “I have asked him to come, and he will be here within two days.”
“Quiet until now Josie spoke up, “We do not need the use of magic to kill a bunch of orcs my lord. I will have my men train harder that is all.”
“It is not the orcs I am asking Kelm to take care of.” Holdan responded, “Grecko will be his target captain, the orcs will still be the responsibility of your men. I have grown impatient with this Ogre, it has the upper hand wielding its magic when I think we have it cornered. We need a battle mage on our side to even the odds.”
“Who will he report to?” Josie asked.
“He will report directly to me,” Holdan responded, “Don’t worry captain he will stay out of your way. His only responsibly will be hunting down and killing Grecko.”
“What will this cost us my lord.” Elcolen asked.
“He doesn’t come cheep,” Holdan answered, “but I already stated to him, he will not be paid until Grecko is dead.”
Holdan wait for more questions, when he was sure there were none he said, “If there are no more questions, I am done for the evening. Captain you will have a few days before the mage arrives, allow the men the next two days off.”
The captain started to protest but Holdan stopped him before he could utter his first word “The men have been fighting for the last week, I want them fully rested when we meet Grecko again. Besides, they have earned it.”
The captain nodded and the meeting was adjourned.
