View Full Version : Magickcello's Guide to LOTR Mess-Ups!

Gah! Did you know that LOTR won 3rd place in most movie screw ups?!?!
Well...lets just say I had a cherry coke and I was bored so.... I found them myself!!!
Blooper 1: When Aragorn is running to Boromir when he is dying, watch the "dead" orcs at the lower left hand of the screen... one "dead" orc raises his head to watch Aragorn pass and then promptly puts it back down again! :o
Blooper 2: When Sam and Frodo are next to the scarecrow, around the time when Sam says "the farthest I've ever been from home," you can see a car drive by in the distance!! (how middle-earthish eh?)
Blooper 3: In Moria when Pip stumbles climbing on the rock structure, Merry grabs him by the butt to keep him from falling! :elfeek: I always knew they would make a great couple!
Blooper 4:In Bree, the menacing guy holding the carot (go figure) is peter jackson...wha?
Blooper 5: After Arwen defeats the Nazgul (damn her anyway) and Frodo is on the ground, you can see a pimple on the right side of his mouth. It's also there in Eymun Muil, but the rest of the movie it's gone!
Blooper 6: When Boromir see's the shape moving towards the Fellowship, he says it can't be a cloud because the wind is blowing in the opposite direction but his hair is blowing in the same direction the shape is moving! Blundering IDIOT!
Blooper 7: When Gandalf is driving his cart, his pipe keeps disappearing and repearing each time the camera goes back and fourth between Frodo and Gandalf.
Blooper 8: Right before the fight with the orcs in Eymun Muil, Gimli's beard (I couldnt help but notice it! It's very attractive! j/k obviously) is braided differently then it is AFTER the orcs are all "dead". No WONDER Boromir died- Legolas was too busy braiding Gimli's hair for them to help him fight.
Blooper 9: When Frodo and Sam are walking in the field, you can clearly see Frodo's sneakers when he lifts his foot up one time.
Blooper 10: In Rivendell, Sam and Frodo are seen standing next to the railing on the balcony...but the balcony is up to their waists! That means it would be up to an elf's knee...hmmmm
Blooper 11: In Moria, after Frodo is injured by the cave troll, Aragorn rushes over to him and some rocks wobble-proving they are unstable and not real.
There are lots more but I decided not to bore you with the details! :p

I must admit I've noticed some of these... It's actually more funny to read them, then when you notice them in the movie..lol

Interesting observations, Magickcello. To be perfectly honest, the only thing I initially noticed in the film was Jackson's cameo.
From now on I'll be watching FOTR with a purpose to look-out for these newly discovered findings. :)

ok.........so when does the apple label rear its ugly head??:o lol
in all thim times i watched the movie...and there were many, i NEVER saw the "car"..all that was visible was a cloud of dust or smoke and a glint in the far distance which could be anything
i dont think the sightseeing orcs are really a blooper, cos no one dies immeadiately in a sword fight.......you die of your injuries or blood loss or septicemia usuallylol
Why is Merry shoving Pip back up the stair a blooper?
PJ always makes a cameo in all his movies
5 and 6 are true......but hey come on....Elijah was only 18...you get the odd spot at 18lol.....and lets be honest , it was just to get the line in from the book
the pipe thing ive heard before, but when your smoking you dont leave your pipe glued to your mouth, at least i never did, so thats not all that valid
now the beard thing ive never looked at before...so that could be true
the sneaker thing isnt tho....
the balcony thing isnt a blooper either......this is a house that has all types of people visiting.....either the hobbits were in an area created for the vertically challanged races of ME, or maybe the Elves just wanted a low balustrade.....these are Elves remember....they can walk on a single rope......they dont need the railings for safety
and as for the rocks, anyone who has been near a rockfall and has tried to move across it will know that even very heavy rocks will wobble with only a light touch if theyve ended up balanced in such a way as to allow them to....so thats not a blooper either:cool:

Magickcello
November 11th,2002, 02:55 AM
well hmph! lol I have explanations for all of them.
#1. spelling is my LD. I do spell check 3 times for everything I type! sad really!
#2. it was a car because while I was online I saw this site that said it was actually a car from one of the costume managers.
#3.ok fine I'm trying to make up an excuse for the orcs but I thought it was sorta funny coz he just popped his head up and every other orc was really still.
#4. well I just thought where merry happened to catch pip was a little....off :naughty:
#5. people get spots but he had the exact same one to different times in the movie and in the time between he didn't have one at all.
#6.the pipe was in his hand one shot and in the next it wasnt anywhere
#7.Rivendall was built as a haven for elves in the time of the war. hobbits don't normally visit elves; bilbo was probably the first and that was thousands of years after rivendall was built. Elves had never even heard of hobbits when elrond created it.
#8. I didn't know peter jackson made cameo appearances since I have never seen any of his other films.
*bangs mallet*
I rest my case :)

finding bloopers in any movie is funny...some that i have noticed in lotr are..
when gandalf leaves after giving frodo the ring, it shows him ducking under the hobbit latern as he says the whole spill about needing to find answers when frodo replies "i dont understand" and gandalf turns back around the latern is swaying as if he hit it (he didnt)
when gandalf is reading the account of isildur keep an eye on the candle to his right, it melts down ,and then grows back up again...
theres plenty more, i just laugh at them..:) lol
after rivendell, frodo gets the chain for the ring, there are numerous points were the chain disappears and then reappears
Magickcello
November 11th,2002, 04:01 AM
you noticed that chain one to?? I thought I was going mad! I told some of my friends while they were watching it and they said "Wha??? I don't see anything!" during that scene his shirt is also unbuttoned further and the sheets pulled down and one point and then one another time his shirt was all buttoned up and the covers pulled up... (you can count on me to notice that one! :naughty: !!)
Catz
November 11th,2002, 05:51 AM
heheh my point is, that from the movie you cant tell its a car...you just assume it is
and Rivendell was built at a time when elves and dwarves still had commerce too...and anyway it still doesnt negate the fact that the balustrade was simply decorative for the elves, so they could make it as low as they wanted...maybe they didnt want to spoil the view lol
heheh and i didnt even notice the carrot misspell lol but then again you know my spelling lol roflmao
and im not saying that magik doesnt have a point teddy...i DID agree with a couple of the points raised, just that some of them are spurious.
the chain one is another that IS def a mistake, the swinging lantern one is hard to say.....whose to say he didnt touch it while the camera was on Frodo? or that a gust of wind didnt set it swinging...the door WAS open...
as for the candles...they look fine to me...they are large for the first three shots, and burned down for the last two, thus showing the amount of time Gandalf has spent poring over the scrolls....the second shot is from a low angle tho, which is deceptive....
But cut the poor director a little slack with the pimplelol roflmao lol

It's ok Catz, I understand where you were comming from. It's just at first you were being a little harsh... And about the pimple give poor elijah a break. Like Catz said he was ony 18. I even now at 25 I still get the occasional break out. Plus where you talked about first seeing it, kind of fits. He was all messed up from just getting stabbed by the Ringwrath, he wasn't ment to be pretty... :)

Apart from the one where Aragorn bumps into the camera when they leave Bree which has been recently discussed, you can see that when Gandalf grabs Sam from the bushes and puts him on the table, a map under Sam frequently is there in one shot but not there in the next.
Great thread idea by the way
Archer of Lorien

This has been mentioned before, but Boromir's death scene where in some shots, his right hand is on Aragorn's shoulder, and others it isn't.

Thanks Ringbearer!
I saw that too, Archer...and also, what happened to the monumental moment of Boromir's horn being cleaved! Thats a huge part! It just turns out to be broken. Well... thats not a mess-up but still!

some of these are wrong, i have read the special fx book to this 'cinefex' and for all that trouble they went to they would not let a car get in the picture!!!!!pfbbt

ok ok! calm down! seesh! I'm not dissing the movie or anything, some people and I just thought thats what it was! *ducks from rotten fruit being chucked at Magic* you really didn't have to go through all the trouble to prove to me it was a house, I would have believed you! I'll admit, a lot of these will probably be wrong! After all, my eyes aren't 20/20! *pulls on granny glasses*

magic is right guys, come on we all love the movie and hey mistakes are meant to be laughed at not picked and proved until they are either right or wrong. Lets just keep watching the movie we love, and if we happen to see something that looks odd chuckle, make a bag of popcorn (with butter and parmasean cheese!!), and then keep right on watching!! :) :) :)
TheRingBearer
November 12th,2002, 07:15 PM
But I'm so sure its a car. If it is a house then why does it move up the picture? Not that I'm saying you're wrong or anything but it really does looks like a car.

Thank you Togo!! :) :) :)
It looks like it, doesn't it Ringbearer....
I found two more that looked like mess ups:
1. At the end when sam tries to get to Frodo in the water, he is about half way there when he starts to drown... then all of a sudden, Frodo grabs Sam's hand...and he has not even moved the boat! (if that makes any sense at all)
2.Remember in Moria, when Pippin accidentally bumped the skeleton down the hole? ( :elfeek: foolish tooks I tell ya!) Well, when the body falls down, the chain attached to the body also has a stone block attached that as well. The problem is that the chain has not stretched all the way out before the block falls into the hole as well. Thats impossible. Look at that part and you will see what I am saying.

yep..your first one does make sense and i thought that to...but he could've moved very fast when we weren't looking...

my only problem with y'all discussing this is a lot of these so-called "mistakes"...are nothing of the kind, simple missunderstandings of the actual perception of the movie. i mean, u wouldn't believe how many more of these "mistakes" were reported on the net once the movie made its theatrical debut...most of the ones which u've mentioned, including a few like the direction of the river flowing in Hobbiton.
Boromir's disappearing hand? don't ya think the guy would be losing a lot of strength, not able to keep his hand up consistently?
Gandalf's disappearing pipe? The Shire is a big place my friends, i'm sure he'd have to switch hands sometimes...a wizard, but a bumbling one at that ;)
and the house...lol...i think Samwise took care of that one, don't u?
only one mistake that i know of conclusively...the only one i really have seen - its Frodo's "racing tears." as u say, watching mistakes in one of ur favorite movies is very enjoyable...its just that most of these "mistakes" aren't mistakes at all. and btw, the chain on the bucket is very interest, have to look for that one!

i noticed that one about Frodo's shirt lol trust me to notice that.
In the cinema i really did think there was a car but it was v small and personally i havent noticed it on the DVD which i think is because it's too small. not that it really matters anyway. I have to admit i hadnt really noticed any others. i obviously dont pay enough attention.

November 13th,2002, 09:38 PM
One that still bothers me... is when Gandalf is picking Sam form the window!!
when Sam is luying on the table, When you see Gandalf you alose notice that sam is not a living person!! quite obvious!
Bonos-Girl
November 13th,2002, 09:40 PM

me too! but I guess I was to busy looking at aragorn! :naughty:
::cough:: yes anyway
a lot of things in the backround I've discovered are hard to see on my T.V screen because it doesn't focus in on the backround. But a lot of things I can see better on my computer. who woulda thought? ahh yes...I also made an observation. It's not a movie mistake, but it is something I noticed.....
there is an elf in the council of elrond who has stubble! :)

I've been thinking about that pimple. Who said that hobbits don't get pimples? Maybe this poor hobbit just happened to get a pimple at the exact same place twice!? I don't think Tolkien ever mentions anything about whether hobbits get pimples or not, so we'll never know. :)
I agree with you that it's fun to look for bloopers. The one that I get most annoyed at in FOTR is when you see both of the argonath holding out their right arms, then when you see them from behind one of them is holding out his right arm and the other is holding out his left arm.

I didn't get the one about the Argonath....hmmmm...interesting
Catz
January 13th,2003, 01:22 PM
i actually dont think the one about the arm of the argonath statue is in fact a mistake......i think its just the angle of the shot
the boats going past the foot of the left most of the two statues IS a mistake tho.........in one shot from above you see the foot of the statue on a plinth.....several feet above the water level.........but then as the boats pass it the foot is level with the water
:catz:
Polly Sandybanks
January 13th,2003, 05:20 PM

But about the arms.. I've watched it so many times.. but perhaps you're right.

heheh just a bit ;).......ive looked carefully and that.....and the ring on its chain in Rivendell, and maybe the Boromir hand thing...are the ONLY real mistakes that ive seen........lol i dont even agree with the tear one.....cos given the lighting and angle and the fact that you dont know how long hes standing there there ARE other explanations :naughty: lol
but then......i dont watch movies looking for mistakes either ;)

One thing I've been thinking of, which is not really a blooper, and I don't know if its been explained before.....anyway in Moria, where they are climbing up the steps, before Gandalf says he can't remember, anyway the steps are really steep, even gandalf looks like hes having to struggle to get up, well, if Dwarves had built it, wouldn't the steps be shallower, and not so steep??
Polly Sandybanks
January 15th,2003, 08:58 AM
They probably would.. but to me it always felt like this cave was old and abandoned, so maybe parts of the stairs had fallen apart or something? Or else the goblins living in there now had done something to them?

when Frodo wakes up in Rivendell the ring is on a chain around his neck in one shot and then disappears
the hand part is when Boromir is dying and in the shots of him he has a hand on Aragorns shoulder, but in the Aragorn shots its gone.......tho i do think with that one it could just have been his hand moving ;)

Here's one right from the producers/directors--During the audio commentary on the extended DVD, Fran Walsh (I think) points out that you can clearly see the bandage on Suraman's left hand finger while he is summoning the snow storm on the mountain--Chris Lee had slammed his fingers in the hotel door earlier before the shoot. Even the makers of the movie can laugh at their own mistakes!

January 17th,2003, 08:11 PM
i noticed the one about Boromir's arm-one shot it's there, then it's not, then it is-Argh!!!!
Another discontinuity was at the Ford of Bruinen. There are shots of Arwen as the water floods past-she has her sword arm still held up, then it's lowered, then it's held up again. Kinda odd.
Ronin
January 19th,2003, 05:26 PM
thats the one part i really dug about the director's commentary...all three laughing about the visible bandage on Lee's hand...poor guy ;)
and about discontinuity...these guys were looking at 8 + hours of dailies AFTER shooting them, can give'em a little slack
